8 Claims.
An object of my present invention is to pro vide a sadiron construction having a rest element of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, the present application being a division of my co-pending application Serial Number 31,613, filed July 16, 1935.
Still a further object is to provide a rest element comprising one portion which serves as a foot and another portion which serves as an arm, which arm and foot cooperate when the iron is lip-ended to support the iron, the arm also serving as an iron cord plug protector.
A further object is to provide in with the foot and arm portions a connecting means for the rest element on the shell comprising hooked lugs on one of the portions and plain lugs on the other one, whereby during assembly the hooked lugs can first be hooked into position and then the rest element swung to its proper position, whereupon the other lugs enter perforations in the shell and may then be bent to retain the rest element in assembled position.
Still another object is to provide the rest element initially formed of a shape slightly different from the portion of the shell against which it fits when assembled, so that when it is assembled, it is placed under such tension that a rigid connection is provided which eliminates any possibility of lost motion of the rest element relative to the shell.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a sadiron with my rest element attached thereto, the rear end of the iron and the rest element being shown in vertical, longitudinal cross section.
Figure 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Figure 1., showing the rest element attached to the shell.
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line 3--3 of Figure l to show further details of attachment.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the rear end of the iron showing the rest element in assembled position thereon, parts of the iron being broken away; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view similar to Figure 1, showing a position of the parts during the assembling operation.
On the accompanying drawing I have used the numeral ID to indicate a sole plate, [2 a shell connection Divided and this application April 9,
and M the handle of a sadiron. My rest element is indicated generally at A. It comprises a foot portion it having a relatively wide rear edge H50, and an arm portion 18. It is adapted for positioning against a pair of walls of the 5 shell 52 indicated at 20 and 22. These walls are arranged at an angle relative to each other.
The arm 3 serves as a means to protect the terminal pins or iron cord plug (not shown), while the terminal end of the arm I8, indicated at 88a, cooperates in conjunction with the rounded edges lta of the foot portion Hi to support the iron in an inclined up-ended position.
The arm 88 is channel shaped in cross section, the flanges thereof being indicated at 18b. The foot portion It is also channel shaped in cross section, the flanges thereof being indicated at 55b. The flanges l8b terminate in hooked lugs 2 adapted to hook into perforations 26 in the wall 28 of the shell 12. The flanges l6b are pro- 20 vided with forwardly extending lugs 28 adapted to enter perforations 30 of the wall 22.
By first placing the rest member in the position shown in Figure 5, and then swinging-it as indicated by the arrow 0. until the dotted position of Figure 1 is assumed, the lugs 24 are hooked against dislodgment from the perforations 25, and the lugs 28 enter the perforations 3t. Thereafter the foot portion 16 is sprung downwardly from the dotted line position to the full line position thereof, and the lugs 28 bent over laterally inside the shell as shown in Figures 2 and 3, to thus connect the rest member under tension with the shell.
The angle of the forward and lower edges of the fiangeslfib and I8b respectively is slightly greater than the angle of the walls 20 and 22, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Figure 1, so that when the full line position is assumed, the parts are under tension.
This arrangement provides for a simple connection of the rest member on the shell with a minimum of material and operations in assembly, as well as a minimum of operations in forming the parts.
Some changes may be made in the arrangement and construction of the various parts of the sadiron construction, without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a sadiron construction, a sole plate, a
shell, and a rest element attached to the rear of said shell, said rest element comprising a rearwardly extending foot, an arm and a pair of forwardly extending flanges at the sides of said arm, hooked lugs formed on said flanges, said shell having perforations into which said lugs are hooked, said rest element having other lugs spaced from said first lugs, said shell having other perforations through which said other lugs extend, said other lugs being bent to retain them and also said hooked lugs in position and to retain the rest element assembled relative to the shell.
2. In a sadiron construction, a sole plate, a shell, and a rest element of resilient material sprung into place and attached to said shell, said rest element comprising a wide foot and an arm extending in the same general direction to serve as a rest for the sadiron in upended position, hooked lugs intermediate the ends of said rest element, said shell having perforations into which said lugs are hooked, said rest element having other lugs spaced from said first lugs, said shell having other perforations through which said other lugs extend, said other lugs being bent to retain them in position whereby the combined effect of the spring action and the lugs retains the rest element assembled relative to the shell.
3. In a sadiron construction, a sole plate, a shell having a pair of walls and a rest element attached to said walls, said rest element comprising a wide rearwardly extending foot, an arm upwardly extending and a pair of forwardly extending side flanges on said arm, hooked lugs on said flanges and in the planes thereof, one of said walls being perforated, said lugs being hooked in the perforations thereof, said rest element having other lugs on said foot, the other wall of said shell having other perforations through which said other lugs extend, said other lugs being bent to retain said rest element in assembled position relative to said walls by the combined effect of the spring action and the lugs.
4. In a sadiron construction, a sole plate, a shell and a rest element attached to the rear of said shell, said rest element including an upwardly extending arm, flanges on the sides thereof and extending forwardly therefrom, lugs on the lower margins of said flanges and extending downwardly and forwardly, said shell having perforations into which said lugs are hooked, said rest element having other lugs spaced from said first lugs, said shell having other perforations through which said other lugs extend, said other lugs being bent laterally to retain them in posi tion relative to said shell and the rest element assembled on the shell.
5. In a sadiron construction, a sole plate, a shell and a rest element attached to said shell, said rest element comprising a Wide foot and an arm thereabove of channel shape adapted to enclose three sides of an iron cord plug, a handle on said shell adapted to enclose the fourth side of an iron cord plug, hooked lugs at each end of each wall of said channel shaped arm, the
top of said shell having perforations into which said lugs are hooked, the foot of said rest element having other lugs, the back of said shell having other perforations through which said other lugs extend, said other lugs being bent to retain said rest element in assembled position relative to said shell.
6. In a sadiron construction, a sole plate, a shell having a pair of Walls and a rest element attached to said walls, said rest element comprising a rearwardly extending wide foot portion and an upwardly extending arm portion, said arm portion being channel shaped and adapted to enclose three sides of an iron cord plug for protecting the plug, preformed hooked lugs on the flanges of said arm and lying in the planes thereof, one of said walls being perforated and the perforations thereof receiving said lugs, said foot portion having lugs spaced from said first lugs, the other wall of said shell having other perforations through which said other lugs extend, said other lugs being bent to retain said rest element in assembled position relative to said Walls.

In a sadiron construction, a sole plate, a shell having a pair of walls at an angle relative to each other and a rest element attached to said shell, said rest element comprising a foot portion having side flanges to reinforce the same against bending and a forwardly opening channel shaped portion extending at an upwardly and rearwardly inclined angle from the base of said foot portion and adapted to enclose the sides and back of an iron cord plug, one of said portions being contoured for engagement with one of said walls and the other one for engagement with the other of said walls, one of said portions having lugs and the other having lugs which are hooked, said shell having perforations to receive the lugs which are hooked and to receive the other lugs, said oth r lugs being bent to retain the rest element assembled on the shell.
8. In a sadiron construction, a sole plate, a shell having a pair of walls at an angle relative to each other and a spring metal rest element attached to said shell, said rest element comprising rearwardly diverging rest portions, one to extend rearwardly from the lower rear portion of said shell and the other to extend upwardly and rearwardly from the upper rear portion of said shell, said other rest portion being a forwardly opening channel adapted to enclose three sides of an iron cord plug, one of said rest portions being adapted for engagement with one of said walls and the other rest portion for engagement with the other of said walls with said rest ele-.-
