Be it known that I, LADIsLAs LAKATOS, a citizen of the United States,and resident of N ew York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Typesetters Scales, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inV rules, more especially in folding rules and has for its vmain object to provide a. rule of the mentioned character which could be. effectively and conveniently used by printers for measuring` type after being set up.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rule of the mentioned character which is sin'iple and practical in its construction, which has improved .means to hold. it in its open or closed position, respectively, which can be carried around by the workman very conveniently and which will be easy and cheapto manufacture, durable in use and exact in its measurements.
To obtain the mentioned objects, I provide a rule which nay be constructed of two or four equal sections held together by joints suitable. to be kept in open or in a short closed form, having means to keep its edges intact and perfect, having end projections to make. adaptable to measuringset up type and finally having four different scales alongside of its four edges and thereby representing any four main type measurements used in a printers shop.
For a full description of the .invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of details of construction of the same for effecting the various results mentioned heerinbefore, reference is' to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, forming part of .this specification.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modiiication, still the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of my printers rule in full length open and shown as made of four sections,

Referring more closely to the drawings, 6 `indicates-the'main; body of the sections of the rule, being preferably made of wooden strips. Both edges of each strip are covered with a thin metal protection 7 made of sheet met-al and being bentover the two surfaces of the strip for a short distance. Said protection is continued at and around the ends of each strip fully covering the ends of the sections as at 8 and forming a pocket into which thev wooden strip is pressed and kept in position by being enclosed in the integral sheet metal protection y and 8 and having a tight tit therein. The
two ends of each adjoining sections are overlapping and a pin 9 1s connecting them rotatably and secured to them by any suitable means. Two cooperating impressions l0, l0 Fig. 5 are pressed into the metal cov- `ering` at the ends of each section, one being inwardly into the material of the section, the o ther cooperating one in theotherV l section being outwardly and the two fittingy into each other Fig. 4. When the rule is opened, kor closed fully, said two pairs of cooperating impressions and raised portions at the ends of the sections snap `into a liXed position and keep the rule closed or opened as the case may be. If'it isdesired to open the folder rule or to fold the open one, the cooperating impressions can be forced out of their locked position with a slight pressure sideways on the rule sections and snapped into the desired new position. The 4metallic covering will keep the rule steadily in an exact and perfect shape andy the construction of its joints will make it easy and che-ap to manufacture and provide an easily opera-ted and still reliable means for securing the same in the position desired.
The rule may have a scale alongside each of its four edges and thereby facilitate for the printer to make all kinds of measure ments with the same rule as against the several rules used at present in printers shops. For instance, one side vof vthe rule may have scales for measuring agate and 8 point types, the other sidemaj7 have the tot llt)
scales for the 6 and 12 point types. At the Y same time the rulebeing adapted to be y'folded, can be carried around conveniently in any pocket of the workman using the same.
At one end of my rule I arrange a double projection l1 which can be used to be placed against the types set and the scale put into the right position to read the measurement of the types set. The inside edges of this projection may also be covered with the metallic protection of the last section o1 the rule as at 12 and insure an exact measurement all the time and a long'life to the instrument. y
Having thus described my invent-ion7 what I claim as new and want to protect by Letters Patent, is

In a printers rule, in combination, two or more longitudinal sections oi equal lengths arranged with adjacent ends-overlapped, pivots connecting said overiapped ends and lying flush with the outer faces thereof whereby the sections may be folded j flat one upon the other, means in connection with said sections :tor automatically locking them either in extended position or in tolded position, each one of the sections alongside each of its longitudinal edges being provided with a dili'erent printers scale adapted to measure a different size of printing type.

In a printers rule, in combination, two or more longitudinal sections of equal lengths arranged with adjacent ends overlapped, metallic strips extending along the side edges of said sections and bent over upon the top andl bottom sides thereof, said strips' at the ends of the sections extending entirely across the top and bottom sides thereof forming pockets into which the sectionsare pressed, pivots connecting said overlapping ends and lying flush with the top and bottom sides thereof whereby the sections may be folded flat one upon the other, means in connection with the pocket extensions of said metallic strips Jfor automatically locking the sections either in extended position or in folded position, cach one of the sections alongside each of its ,toer longitudinal edges being provided with a different printers sca-le adapted to measure a different size of printing type, anda head extended laterally from each side edge oi one of the sections and at right-angles thereto, to engage over the types to be measured.
