My invention is an improvement in carpenters rules, and relates more especially to that particular type comprising a plurality of Sections pivoted one to another so that the several sections constituting the rule may lbe folded together' laterally and occupy comparatively small space, such rules being commonly known as zigzag rules.
The primary object of my invention is to provide' an attachment for a carpenters rule of this special ltype consisting cf an auxiliary jointed rule having a metal clip pivoted thereto whereby said auxiliary rule can be readily attached to anyone of the main sections of the carpenters rule when the latter is extended to thereby permit the mechanic to obtain inside measurements quickly and accurately.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment of this kind which is adapted to be connected to the zigzag `rule when folded "without materially increasing the bulk thereof, being arranged in association therewith as to practically form a conti'nuation of said folded rule for compactness in placing the complete measuring rule in the inechanics kit.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment for a carpenters rule which is simple in construction, can loe manufactured at a small cost, and may be connected to any oneof the jointed sections of the' rule according to the location of the measurements required, as well as closely arranged at one side of the'zigzag rule when folded. 1
With these principal objects in view my invention consists in a rule attachment having plates pivoted thereto and slidable one on the other with flanges or projections for engaging opposite sides of the rule, and a spring for normally operating the sliding plate to engage said rule; all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in V the appended claims.
In thel drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the zigzag rule in closed arrangement with the auxiliary rule-section thereon.

As shown in the drawings the auxiliary rule-section constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly applied to that form of carpenters rule commonly known as a zigzag rule although of course it will beunderstood that the saine may be applied to any other form of carpenter-s rule or similar measuring device. As usual in the construct-ion of a carpenters rule of the type shown the several sections thereof designated 10 are connected one to another by pivot joints 11, and for the purpose of forining a compact device to occupy a small amount of space in the mechanics kit when my invention is applied to a carpenters rule one end section 12 of the zig zag rule is reduced in length and the end section 13 of the auxiliary rule is also reduced in length to join with the aforesaid short section of the zigzag rule when said auxiliary rule is folded and placed thereon as shown in Fig. 1. The auxiliary rule is preferably made up of two jointed sections 13 and 111, and to the outer end of the longer section 14 there is attached a metal clip 15 by means of a` pivot pin 16, said metal clip comprising an inner plate 17 and an outer plate 18 slidable laterally one upon the other `for whichv pur pose the plate 17 is provided with a slot 19 while the companion plate 18 is provided with an opening 2() corresponding with the size of the pivot pin which passes through the opening and slot from the auxiliary rule. @ne end of the pivot-pin is upset on plate 17 and the other end formed with a head bearing against the section of the auxiliary rule to which the clip is connected, as shown in Fig. 6. .For the purpose of attachment to the carpenters rule the inner plate 17 of the clip carried by the auxiliary rule is provided at one side with outwardly projecting short flanges 21 21 and opposed to these flanges the outer plate is provided with an outwardly projecting flange 22, a section of the zigzag rule being clamped between these flanges, and in order that the slidable plate may be spring-actuated to engage said rulesection it is provided at the outer end of an extension of one side thereof with an outwardly projecting fla-nge 28 to which is attached a flat spring 24 the free ends of which bear against the flange 22 of the companion plate, and to provide for manipulating the slidable plate against the action of the spring the outer plate has a reduced extension 25 projecting between the flanges 21 21 of plate 17 at the outer end of which is an outwardly turned flange or finger engaging portion 26 cooperating with the flange or linger engaging portion 23 whereby the slidable plate may be manipulated against the action of the spring to release the clip fioin the carpenters rule by pressure against the flanges 23 and 26, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 6. From the foregoing description it will be obvious that the companion plates forming the metal clip are rotatable on the pivot pin, and that one of said plates has a sliding movement upon the other, the outer plate being stationary with respect to the rule section while the inner plate which is interposed between said outer plate and rule-section being provided with slot 19 has a sliding movement on the pivot pin to separate flanges 21 22 for receiving a section of Athe zigzag rule between them in connecting the auxiliary rule thereto. Of course the vauxiliary rule can be made of several joined sections instead of only two in either instance however the section 18 thereof being of such length with respect to the aforementioned section 12 of the zigzag rule as to equal the length of the sections 10 so that said auxiliary rule section can be placed against the folded zigzag rule section, as shown in F 1 for compactness, and of course it may be held iii place by a rubber band or any other securing means.
As will be obvious the attachment will not effect the use of the zigzag rule for ordinary purposes in making measurements, and when it is desired to make inside measurements the auxiliary rule may be readily and quicklyapplied to any one of the main sections of the zigzag rule by engaging the latter with the metal clip in the manner hereinbefore set forth, and of course said auxiliary rule can be slid along the main rule to any point desired. From this it will be seen that the attachment provides for making iiiside measurements quickly and accurately',
and that it is fold-able with the zigzag rule y to occupy a minimum amount of space in the niechanics lut,
I claim:
1. An attachment for a carpenters rule comprising an auxiliary rule and a metal clip pivotally connected thereto for turning movement thereon and consisting of two substantially rectangular plates one slidable with respect to the other, opposing flanges on the plates adapted to clamp the carpenters rule between them, and a spring interposed between adjoining flanges of the coInpanion plates to move the slidable plate to clamping position.
2. An attachment for a carpenters rule comprising an auxiliary rule and a metal clip pivotally connected thereto for turning movement thereon and 'consisting of two substantially rectangular plates one slidable with respect to the other, opposing flanges on the plates adapted to clamp the carpenters rule between them, a spring interposed between adjoining flanges of the companion plates to move the slidable plate to clamping.

An attachment for a carpenters rule comprising an auxiliary rule and a metal clip pivotally connected thereto for turning movement thereon and consisting of a plate pivoted to the auxiliary rule and having a projecting flange, a companion plate slidable on said plate and having a projecting flange cooperating with the aforementioned flange for clamping the carpenters rule between them, and a spring on one of the plates engaging the other plate to move the slidable plate to clamping position.
5. An attachment for a carpenters rule comprising an auxiliary rule and a metal clip connected thereto and consisting of a plate pivoted to the auxiliary rule for turning movement and having a projecting flange, a companion plate slidable on the aforementioned plate and having outwardly projecting flanges at both sides thereof one of which cooperates with the flange on said first mentioned plate to receive the carpenters rule between them, and a spring interposedbetween flanges of the plates for moving the slidingy plate to clamping position.
6. An attachment for a carpenters rule comprising an auxiliary rule and a metal clip connected thereto for turning movement thereon consisting of a plate pivoted to the auxiliary rule and having a reduced extension at one side thereof with outwardly projecting flanges at they end of said extension and opposite side of the plate respectively, a companion plate slidable between the rule and rst mentioned plate and having spaced flanges at one side thereof between which the flanged extension of the other plate projects and an extension at the other side of the slidable plate with an outwardly projecting flange beyond the contiguous flange of said rst mentioned plate, and a spring interposed between the last mentioned flanges for moving the slidable plate in one direction.
