FOLDING RULE.
Application led July 3,
,with a plurality of sections that are pivotally connected together, the object being to provide an eight inch end section with a sliding section, whereby the rule may be extended when taking inside measurements, or for measurements longer than the rule itself.
In other folding rules with whichI am now familiar, the sliding section is fastened to lthe six inch endv link or section of the rule, which is a decided disadvantage, in View of the fact that considerable time is lost when the rule is opened to take outside measurements, and in further view of the fact that the sliding section has to be pushed back a certain degree.
As it is now, vthe measurements will be two inches longer than the actual length of the material being measured, which will obviously occasion a loss of material.
A. further object of my invention resides in the provision of a folding rule, whereii the desired features of durability and efficiency.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the inventionvresiding in the construction, combination, andarrangement of parts as'v claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts inl the several views, and wherein v Figure l is a side elevational view of a folding rule, whereinpthe eight inch section is provided with a sliding section.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2,- showing the sliding section, fully extended.
Figure 3a is a side elevation of Figure 3.
1923. Serial N0. 649,193.
' Figures 4 and 5 are detail cross sections upon the lines 4.-4; and 5-5, respectively, .of Figure 3*l and Figure 6 is an enlarged perspective of the sliding section guide carried by the end of said eight inch section of the folding rule.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5
designates ygenerally a conventional type L folding rule, consisting of pivotally connected sections 6, one of these sections being 8 inches in length, with the exception of the ltop section 6', which is of six inch length.
Upon the free end of the eight inch section is an extension guide 7. This guide 7 comprises a thin oblong plate 8, formed with down turned portions 9, at the side edges thereof to snugly t within recesses upon the side edges of the said eight inch edge section of the rule. These down turned portions are formed with inwardly extending clips l0, turned against the underside of the rule section, and are formed with cutting edges 11, which enter the material of the rule section. The guide is also provided at the ends with pairs of inturned spring lugs or members l2, extending upwardly from the plate at theside edges thereof to a height sufficient to permit passage or movement there over of the sliding rule section. 13 designates the sliding section that has sliding'movement between the spring lugs 12 of the said guide 7, it being noted that the ends of this section are provided with stops lforlimiting the sliding movement of this section in opposite directions.
In View of the above description, it will at once be apparent that I have provided a folding rule, wherein the eight inch end section is provided with a sliding section `for facilitatmg accurate measurements, this sliding section being more particularly adapted for use in taking of inside measurements, or for measurements longer than the rule itself.
Althou h I have herein shown and described t e preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be'y understood that minor changes may be made therein, without departing fromthe spirit' ters-Patent is:
A slide rule comprising sections, stop bers, and the said plate being provided at its stop edges and at points between the first mentioned lugs with other lugs disposed l0 around the edges of the other rule sections.
In testimon)T whereof I aix my signature.
