Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J O HNUOMMINS, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA,
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLINGS.
I 1 Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,808, dated August 4, 1874; applicationfiled July 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN OoMMINs, of Charleston, South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Materials for Kindling Fires, of which the following is a specification The invention relates to materials for kindling fires; and consists in applying a combustible coating to ordinary coal, as hereinafter set forth.
The coal having been broken into pieces nearly or about what is known as nut size is immersed in a heated solution consisting of four (4) parts of rosin and one (1) part of crude turpentine in the gum. The pieces having become thoroughly coated are dipped out and rolled in a preparation two (2) parts of which are pulverized charcoal, one (1) part fine sifted coal, and one (1) part sawdust. The
.pieces are then permitted to dry, when they are ready for use.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A kindling material composed of lumps or pieces of coal coated with inflammable material.
2. A kindling material in which charcoaldust and coal-dust are employed in a coating upon lumps or pieces of coal.
3. A kindling material composed of lumps or pieces of coal coated with a composition of rosin and gum-turpentine, charcoal-dust, coaldust, and sawdust.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in materials for kindling fires, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 2d day of July, 1874.
