Description

.nrrnn *rarns Patented May 9, 1905.
arnr rrrn PAINT COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,600, dated May 9, 1905, Application filed December 19.1904. Serial Ila. 237,576.
To In whom, it 'n'my concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs SrnNcEn FLATAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. .IJOUIS, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paint Com.- pounds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved paint compound. It is designed more especially for use upon and for treating heated metal surfaces, more particularly the front ends and stacks of locomotive and other engines and like purposes.
Said. invention consists of the compounding, substantially as and in the proportions hereiiiiafter named, of certain ingredients presently described, and particularlypointed out by the claim.
I11 the carrying out of my invention I suit ably grind or reduce a quantity of crude gilsonite or asphaltum to the requisite fineness unattended with any heating action, thus preserving it intact and from. loss of any of its properties, as would be the casein effecting the reduction of the material by the use of fire or heat, which would be also more or less hazardous. The thus ground gilsonite is run into a mixingn'rill below, such as disclosed in my pending application filed. December 19, 1904', Serial No. 237,575, into which latter has been previou sly placed about six barrels of naphtha. About eight barrels of the gilsonite are run into the mixing-mill, further quantities of the naphtha being added as the quantity of gilsonite may require in order to regulate the gravity of the asphaltum composition or product. About ten barrels of the naphtha are finally put into the mixing-mill with. the gilsonite to secure the desired or effective product. Into this mixture I place two or three barrels of linseed-oil after having been boiled and then add two barrels of what is con'in'ionly called gloss-oil, preferably prepared as later .noted, and any good drier. Said mixing-null is suitably covered to prevent evaporation or escape of gases to annoy the attendants or workman and alter the whole has become thoroughly amalgamated into a perfect asphaltum composition, as it were, which is effected by rapidly running or rotating the mill. In the production. of said. gloss-oil I suitably reduce or comminute, as finely as may be required, crude resin and run it into a mill such, for instance, herein designated-which has been suitably supplied. with benzin and dissolve the resin therein by agitation unaided by any heating action, and as the oil. is thus produced run it into barrels for use as needed.
My aforesaid paint compound, which is characterized in its application by a black glossy surface, will effectively resist six or seven hundred degrees of heat, and is therefore, as I have found by actual use, highly serviceable for painting, especially the front ends of smoke-stacks of locomotive and other engines, as well as for all steel or wood work and which is incomparable for durability and appearance, while, as previously noted, the element of the use of fire in its manufacture is entirely eliminated, which would be greatly objectionable for the reasons as aforesaid herein given.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as the same may be varied as circumstances suggest Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim- The lmrein-described process of producing a paint compound, which. consists in reducing gilsonite by grinding to a powder; combining with naphtha said gilsonite in powder form by sifting the latter upon said naphtha; and adding to the aforesaid ingredients boiled linseed-oil and gloss-oil, and then thoroughly amalgamating this mixture by the agitating action of a mill.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS SPENCER FLAIAU.
