Bill-T5!) STATES PATENT DFFECE.
HEATER.
Application filed June 25, 192.3. Se ial No. 647,763.
To (all unto/n it mr/y concei e.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Mo- GLAMnnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heaters.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a heating oevice in the nature of an open grate type whereby the products of combustion from the grate basket are de flected against the front wall of the heater, and are retarded in their passage tothe smoke pipe.
A further object is to provide a heater constructed in a manner whereby the heat conveying pipe may be associated therewith to heat a drum in a room arranged above the room containing the heater.
A still further object is to provide a heater of novel construction whereby the heat will be more readily conserved thereby preventing waste of fuel.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of the heater.
forming the subject matter of this'invention. I
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the device in Figure l.
l igure is a front elevation thereof. Figure 4 is a rear view. Figure 5 is a view illustrating the installation of the hcater'and manner of applying a heat conveying pipe thereto and to a drum respectively when it is desired to heat a room disposed above the room containing the heater.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a fragmentary portion of a room with one wall thereof broken away showing the installation of my improved heater. Th h ater is novel shaped and the lower portion 1 thereof is arranged out of line with the upper portion 2 which is connected to the lower portion through the medium of the upwardly inclined intermediate portion 3 as shown. Transversing the rear side of the heater at a point adjacent'the juncture of the lower portion and the intermediate portion, there is a bar 4 adapted to support the masonry of the wall of the room, as clearly shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. This view also disclosesthe'means of applying the heat conveying pipe 5 to the heater and this. pipe rises from, the top .6 and, terminates within the heating drum B arranged in the room C- above the room A.
' While one pipe is shown, it will be apparent that any reasonable number can be employed. v
Detachably secured to the front of the upper portion 2 of theheater, through the medium of the headed bolts 7, there-is a plate 8 which will be termed the front plate.
It should be noted that the upper portion 2is of less size and narrower than the re- ,mammg portions of the heater and secured to the inner side of the plate 8 there is a plurality of superposed elongated deflector plates 9 which are adapted to deflect the heat against the front plate and which have a tendency to prevent escape of heat through the chimney. The front plate collects a maximum amount of the heat which in turn throws it out into the room A. However, a suflicient amount willbe allowed to pass through the slots 9. of the plates to be conveyed to the heating (drum, as, aboveset forth. The slots 9 also allow the smoke to gain access to the smoke pipe 11 which ex tends from the rear wall of the upper portion and pivotally secured to the inner side of the rear wall is a valve 11 controlling the adjacent end of the pipe 11 and acting as a damper therefon.
The front of the lower intermediate portion of the heater is open as shown and disposed within the lower portion in a manner to engage the rear wall thereof is a grate basket 12 which is arranged below the curved rear wall 13 of the intermediate portion 3. By this'wall'13 being thus constructed, it will be readily seen that the heat, etc., will be deflectedupwardly to the plate 8 which in turn together with the defiector plates will deflect the heat,as above set forth.
Formed in the rear wall 13 adjacent its juncture with the rear wall of the bottom portion there is an opening 14: controlled by a hinged draft door 15. The door is operated by an angular .bent handle member 16 extending forwardly and terminating in an eyed hand hold'16. The rear end of the handle member is pivotally secured to one end'of the door carrying member 17 which underlies the bar 4 and is received in the apertured cars 18 formed at the ends thereof as shown.
An ash pan 19 extends from the rear wall of the lower portion below the :grate basket and'removablysecured to the side walls of the rear portion, there is a hearth guard 20 which extends across the entire front in a manner to prevent hot ashes, etc, i'rom eoming in contact with portions of the floor of the room, as well as to provide a-oonvenient foot rest, as will be readily apparent.
The heater can be constructed from" any desired metaland by its peculiar shape can be readily installed in an advantageous .posr
tion in any room to be out of the'way and 1 yet provide suffio'ient heat and also a great saving in fuel consumption.
The heat conveying pipe 5 is detachably secured to the top of the heater :and when it is desired :not to utilize the heat when coirveying heat to the adjacent rooms, a suitable cap "21 is adapted to cover the collar 22 which receives the-lower end :of the heat conveyor pipe.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantage and novel features.
of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make cha nges int-he construction and :in the combination and arrangement of thesevera' l parts, provided that such changes fall within th'esoope of the appendedclaims.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is': v 7
1. A heater of the character described comprising a lower portion, an upper portion, and an upwardly inclined intermediate tending from the inner sideof said plate as.
and for the purpose specified.
2. A heater of the character describedcomprisi-ng alower portion having an open (front, an upper portion arranged out of line with the "lower portion, an intermediate por- 'tion having an open front and connecting the upper and lower portions, a. transverse. bar extending across the' back of the intermediate portion adjacent the juncture-thereof with the lower portion and being adapted to support masonry in the installation of the heater. 7 I I i '3. A room' heater of the character described comprising a lower portion, an
upper portion, and an upwardly inclined intermediate portion connecting the first mentioned portions, a detachable front for the upper portion, atop for the upper portion, a heat pipe detachably secured to said top, an upper room, a heating drum therein to receive the heat pipe, a smoke pipe extending from the rear wall of the upper portion, a basket grate portion fixed within the lower portion at the juncture thereof with the intermediate portion an ash pan arranged below the basket grate and ahear thguard detachably secured to the side edges of the lower portion for the purpose' specified.
