* u. SCHADE POST BINDER FOR LOOSE LEAF SHEETS Filed June 11. 1924 x %elzz Patented May 12 r 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SCI-IADE, OFI'IOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL BLANK BOOK COMPANY, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, A VOLUNTARY TRUST ASSOCIATION OF COPARTNERSHIP, HAVING AS TRUSTEES F. B. TOWNE, E. S. TOWNE, J'. M. TOWNE,
AND F. .w. WILSON.
POST BINDER FOB LOOSE-LEAF SHEETS. 7
Application filed June 11, 1924. Serial No. 719,284.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SGHADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Holyoke, inthe county of I-Iampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post Binders for LooseLeaf Sheets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as post binders for loose leaf sheets, but more particularly relates to the method of forming the flat tubular cheek pieces of such binders and providing them with hinge lugs. p
Referring to the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a detail perspective of the tubular member partially closed preparatory to the securing of the hinge lugs.
Figure 2 a cross section of the tubular member shown at Figure 1 with one of the hinge lugs in position. i
Figure 3 an end View of the completed article.
Figure 4 a view similar to Figure 2 but showing a modificationof the manner of securing thehinge lugs.
Figure 5 a detail perspective of a hinge lug such as would be used in the structure I noted at Figure 4:.
Figure 6 is a broken view of a blank such as would be used in a modification for the formation of the tubular cheek piece, and
Figure 7 is a cross section of the completed article showing the hinge lug secured within a check piece made from the blank shown at Figure 6. 1 I
Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
This invention is of the same general nature as that set forth in the application heretofore filed by me February 26, 1924, under Serial No. 695,219, and is more particularly intended as an improvement upon the structure shown in said application.
In the present invention the tubular cheek piece 1 is blanked out of sheet metal pierced to form elongated openings 2 only one shown) parallel of its length and midway between its sides, and the blank is then partially bent into shape so as to leave the'free ends angularly disposed with respect to.
welded to said angularly disposed members,
which latter are then bent into closed position with their outer edges in close abut ment, thus forming the completed flat tubular member. This operatlon of welding is very conve-nlently performed owing to the fact that the tube is not fully closed but has the angularly disposed portions.
It is not absolutely essential that the diverging ends of the hinge lug be welded to the tube, since the blank 8 from which the tube is shaped may be formed with small openings 7 within which the extremitiesof the divergingends of the lug wlll snap when the lug has been inserted through the opening 2, this construction being fully shown in Figure 6 and Figure 7 and in this con nection the ends of the lugs would diverge more sharply as shown at Figure 5.
What is claimed is The method of forming the tubular members of post binders for loose leafsheets with hinge lugs, which consists in forming a rectangular blank and simultaneously cutting elongated openings therem parallel of its length and midway between its sldes, bendwith the bent portions diverging, inserting mg said blank on a line with said openings 3 in said openings hinge lugs, welding the free ends of said lugs to the inside of the par 'tially completed tube, and finally bending said portions into completed form with their edges 1n close abutment. I
In testlmony whereof I atfix my signature hereto. 1 JOHN SCHADE.
