This invention relates to loose leaf binders of the type commonly called ring binders and it refers particularly to an improved means for providing a wire rib metal with three rings.
It is an object of this invention to provide a three ring wire rib metal with means for opening and closing the rings simultaneously. It is a further object of this invention to provide a third ring in a wire rib metal without welding, Other objects of this invention will become apparent upon reading the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top elevation of one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken along the line II--II of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a bottom elevation of the sheet retaining mechanism illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken along the line IV-IV of Figure 3 showing the sheet retaining mechanism secured to a binder back; and
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view similar to Figure 4, taken along the line V--V of Figure 3.
In the drawings the reference numeral 2 indicates a binder back, to which a pair of cover members 3 is secured in any conventional manner. A cover plate 4 is secured to the binder back 2 by means of a plurality of rivets or eyelets 5. If desired, the cover plate and the back member may be counter-sunk, as indicated at 6 and 1 respectively, so that the rivets will not project beyond the top surface of the cover plate -or the bottom surface of the binder back. The cover plate 4 is provided with down-turned longitudinal edges 3 and is provided with a pair of transversely aligned apertures 9 for each sheet retaining ring. The apertures 9 are illustrated so as to show a solid bottom edge for the cover plate, but it will be understood that the apertures may be notched from the outer edge.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, a pair of duplicate rockable frames I0 is diagonally positioned in the cover plate 4. The frames Il) each have both ends terminating in ring sections I I. The ring sections I I at the center of the cover plate engage each other to form a sheet retaining ring. Each frame I0 is bent inwardly, as indicated at I2 and I3, to provide contact necks I4 and I5.
Another pair of duplicate rckable frames I6 is diagonally positioned in the cover plate 4 opposite the frames I0, The frames I6 each have one end terminating in a ring section II and the other end terminating in a stub section I'I. The

frames I6 are each bent inwardly as indicated at I8, to provide a contact neck I9 adjacent the ring section I I.
The contact neck I4 isprovided with a tongue 20 which engages a groove 2I in the contact neck I9 so as to provide a rocking connection between oppositely disposed companion rockable frames Ill and IG adjacent one end there-of.
The stub section I'I of the frame IB is bent at right angles and its end is bifurcated, as indicated at 22, so as to straddle the contact neck I5 of the oppositely disposed companion rockable frame IEI. The contact neck I5 is grooved, as indicated at 23, and a rod 24 is positioned in the groove 23 to provide a rocking connection between the contact necks I5 of the diagonally positioned frames I. The stub section I1 straddles the rod 24 as well as the contact neck I5.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the mating ring sections adjacent each end of the cover plate are provided with conventional rocking connections and that force applied to any of these rings is transmitted through the rocking connection and the straddling engagement of the stub sections with contact necks of other frames to provide simultaneous opening and closing of all three pairs of mating ring sections.
Although I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention in detail, it will be understood that the description thereof is illustrative, rather than restrictive, as many details may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact details of construction described, except as limited by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a loose leaf binder, a cover plate, a pair of duplicate rockable frames positioned diagonally in said cover plate, a rod extending longitudinally of said cover plate engaging the adjacent edges of said rockable frames, and a second pair of duplicate frames positioned in said cover plate, each frame of said second pair having one end straddling the oppositely disposed frame and said rod.
2. In a loose leaf binder, a cover plate, a three ring mechanism in said cover plate comprising two companion rockable frames oppositely disposed on one side of the transverse center of said cover plate and two other companion rockable frames oppositely disposed on the other side of said center, the center ring being formed by mating ring sections provided on the ends of two diagonally disposed frames, said diagonally disposed.

3. In a loose leaf binder, a cover plate, a pair of duplicate frames diagonally disposed in said cover plate, said frames each having a contact neck adjacent the center of said cover plate,
