Description

F. V. ANDERSON.
PRESS. APPLICATION FILED DEC. 5. 1918.
Patented N 0v. 11, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK V. ANDERSON, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE V. D. ANDERSON COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed December 5, 1918. Serial No. 265,391.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK V. ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a specification. This invention pertains to presses, and more particularly to that type wherein a series of spaced bars are employed to form the press body.
The present structure is in a sense an improvement upon the press shown in Letters Patent No. 829,315, granted to V. D. Anderson under date of August 21, 19.06, to which'reference is made, and has to do more particularly with the means employed to se-v cure the requisite and desired spacing between the bars at the inner edges thereof.
- Under the construction set forth-in said patent, several disadvantages are present:
vfirst, the necessity of' drilling rivet holes through the bars from side to side, which involves time and consequent expense; second, the breaking of'the bars in line with the holes (at which point the bars are the hardest) during the process of straighten.
mg; and, third, the spacing cannot be changed-without first chiseling ofli' theold spacers, driving out the rivets and riveting on new spacers.
The present construction has the following advantages over the old: First, itis not necessary to drill rivet holes in any of the bars, or to give them any special form to receive the spacing elements, thus making a saving in the time required for drilling as well as quite a reduction in breakage during the straightening process which the bars undergo; secondly, the spacers bein removable and interchangeable the width of the drainage slots between the bars can be easily changed at any time by substituting new spacers of different thickness.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a press body in whichthe bars are separated by the improved spacers;
Fig. 2 a perspective view of several of the bars on a larger scale showing the spacers more clearly;
Figs. 3 and 4 perspective views of two of the spacers, that in Fig. 4 being thicker than the other; and
Fig. 5 an edge view of one of the spacers.
Only so much of the complete press is shown as 1s necessary to an understanding of the present improvement, reference being had to the above mentioned patent and others to the same party for details of the press generally.
In the drawings 1 and 2 denote two barrel rings or cross frames, each of which is provided with a semi-circular recess to receive the longitudinally extending body or barrel bars 3. The series of bars on each ring or cross frame is held in place by two oppositely disposed frame bars 4 and 5, and an intermediate bottom frame bar 6, to which is secured a key bar 7 The body bars 3 are preferably of the form illustrated, that is their inner faces produce a stepped construction with the forward edge of each bar extending inwardly to a slight extent beyond the rear edge. Such arrangement is, however, not essential to the present invention and forms the subject matter of the copending application Serial No. 219,837, filed on or a out March'1st,-19l8.
The bars 3 are separated or spaced from each other to provide drainage spaces and to secure such I employ spacers of the form best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the two being the same except for thickness of metal employed in their manufacture. Such spacers may be said to comprise a head or body 8 and a plurality of arms extending from one side thereof, said arms being preferably three in number, two of such arms 9 lying in the same plane and inclined or bent out of the plane of the head, while the third arm is denoted by 10 and is inclined from the head in the opposite direction. There is thus produced a spacer having a head and divergent arms, which latter form a Y that extends to one side of the head. Preferably the intermediate arm 10 will be equal in width to the other two arms combined so as to secure an equal distribution of metal.
The spacers are formed from sheet metal,
the head determining the drainage space be-' are. By using spacers tween each pair of with the spacers interposed formed of difi'erent thickness of metal, the size of the drainage spaces may be readily and accurately determined. Furthermore, the form of the spacer assists in the ready assembling of the bars, the spreading arms holding the bars in their proper position as they are laid up one above the other as well as serving to hold the spacers themselves in place.
What is claimed is 1. In a press, the combination of a sup porting member having a curved face; a series of bars mountedthereon; and a plurality of spacers disconnected from the bars and held therebetween tion of the bars thereon,
2. In a press, the combination of a supporting member having a curved face; a series of bars substantially rectangular in shape supported thereon; and a series of independent disconnected substantially shaped spacers interposed between and clamped by the adjacent faces of the bars whereby drainage spaces will be formed between the inner edges of the bars.
3. A shell or casing for a press, comprising a series of tially circular form; pendent and a series ofindefor a press, comprismg a series of bars laid up in substantially by the binding ac-- bars laid up in a substandisconnected spacers for the bars held between the inner edges of the adjacircular form; and a plurality of spacers formed from sheet metal, the inner ends whereof are clamped between and held by the adjacent bars, said spacers being otherwise disconnected from the bars.
5. A shell or casing for a press, comprising a series of bars laid up in substantially circular form; and a plurality of spacers formed from sheet metal, each of said spacers comprising a head adapted to be clamped between the adjacent inner races of thiebars, and a plurality of diverging fingers extending outwardly from the head.
6.- As a new article of manufacture, a spacer for bars for press shells, comprising a head, and a plurality of divergent fingers extending from one side thereof, said spacer being produced from sheet metal bent to form. I
"7. Asa new article of manufacture, a spacer for bars for press shells, comprising a substantially Y-shaped member, produced from spring sheet steel, cut and bent tol form.
' 8.As a new article of manufacture, a spacer'for bars for press "shells, comprising a head. and three fingers extending from one edge thereof, the intermediate finger being wider than the outer fingers and in clining or diverging therefrom, said outer fingers lying in the same plane.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification.
