T o all whom t may' concern,.- p A Y n Be .it known that L FRnDERlOK EINasT L'W-`a,Sbi`eCt 'of the King of GreatBrtan, residing iny London. England, have. invented certain i new andy useful Improvements in and Relatinglto Tobacco Piy es aIlLdCgar and'CigaretteI-Iolders, of which theQfolloW ing/Vis a speeiiication;
This invention relates to tobacco pipes, cigar and cigarette holders,.and refers to pipesorlholders in which for cooling the smoke and keepingtheboremot the stem and mouthpiece clear'there is provi-ded aital body, v'connected by a slotto the end of the push portion of the mouthpiece, which body y is twisted iito a morefor lessi spiral form.
Heretofore the attachment ott-he Aspirals to thepushjportionidf the mouthpiece has.
been ysecalreLd by sltting the material ofthe push portion',` the flat intermediate portion of the cooling andclearing device engaging in this slot. In practice, iti-iis found that the engagement'fin and disengagement of this fiat portion from the slot injures the material so that iirm connection of the parts is no longer possible.
Slotting the material to permit engagement of the flat portion of the clearing device has a tendency to weaken the material which may break away at this point so that the utility of the cooling and clearing device is impaired or its use no longer possible.
The present invention has for its object certain improvements designed to overcome the aforesaid disadvantages.
According to this invention the bore of the mouthpiece at the push portion, or end of the mouthpiece which is insertible in the stem, is increased in diameter for a distance from the extreme end inwardly to form a recess. in which is secured in any convenient manner a metal or other bushing or tube of wear resisting material. The free end of the push portion is slotted at diametrically opposite ypoints and slots are formed in said tube or bushing coinciding with those in thepush portion.
It will thus be seen that when in position the fiat intermediate portion of the cooling and clearing device engages in the slots in the inetal tube so that the effort when the mouthpiece is rotated, instead of falling upon the softer material, vulcanite for example, falls upon the bushing whereby damage or wear to the stem engaging end extending of the push Lportionis avoided, atthe same time the. .ineai 1 s ofy connection 4is Vsuch als to u permit the. ready removal Aand replacement oit` the clearing and cooling device without damage to the,mjclilith-piece. yIn order that the .invention may 'be "the better understood drawingsv are appended in which- Fig. l -is a side view partly inv-section o a pipe 4embodying the present invention. n
-Fig 2 Lis :a fragmental longitudinal sectional View on a larger `scale-than Fig.v l, of theY mouthpiece .removed .from vthe ,pipe. Y Y ig. 3 is a fragmental*sectionalside view 0f the' mouthpiece On the same scale as Fig. 2. n y y Fig. t is an end view ois'ame.` l n Fig. l5 is a `fragmental longitudinal sectional view, `on a Llarger scale" than the former views, of the stem `mouthpieee and the coolingand clearing device. y
Fsf isa dtail view, on saine .scale as' Fig. 5', of' the cooling and clearing device.
Fig. 7 is a fragmental detail sectional View, on same scale as Fig. 5, of the mouthpiece and the push portion of the mouthpiece.
Fig. 8 is ardetail sectional view, on same scale as Fig. 5, of the bushing or lining for the mouthpiece, and
Fig. 9 is a fragmental sectional View. on same scale as Fig. 5. of the end of the stem.
Similar reference characters denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawingsi a. indicates the pipe bowl, a the stem, b indicates the mouthpiece and b the push portion. The device for cooling and clearing the bores of the stem and mouthpiece is a length or strip c of material, aluminum for example, having a flat intermediate portion c extended at its sides and forming laterally extending lugs c2 shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the strip at each end of the flat portion being twisted intoI spiral or helical form, in practice the cooling and clearing device when in operative position through the bore of the stem from near the `iunction of this bore with the interior of the bowl, through the bore of the bushing d in the push portion and through the bore of the mouthpiece to a point near the bit or outer end thereof. As shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 7, the bore of the endof the push portion b is enlarged to provide a recess, and
Secured therein either by friction r other Suitable manner is a bushing or liner d, preferably of such length as to project so1newhat beyond the free end of the push portion for reception in the boreof the stem, so that in placing the device c in operative position in the mouthpiece, or in operating the device, it engages said bushing and not the softer material of the push portion b', thus avoiding injury thereof.'
The bushing d is slotted at diametrically opposite points d, corresponding slots b2 being formed in the push portion b, and when the device 0 is in operative position in the stem and mouthpiece the lugs 02 engage in the slots d and b2.
Obviously the invention may be applied to cigar and cigarette holders.
Claims:
l. In a device of the character described, the combination of, a stem having a recess at one end and a bore communicating with the recess, a mouthpiece having a bore and having a push portion insertible in the recess of the stem and having a recess in the push portion provided With opposed longitudinally extending slots, a bored bushing in the recess of the mouthpiece communicating with the bore of the mouthpiece and with the bore of the stem When the push portion is inserted in the stem and having longitudinally extending slots registering with the slots of the push portion, and a cooling and clearing device having helical ends and a flat intermediate portion forming laterally extending lugs; the respective helical ends, when the cooling and clearing device is in operative positionLbeing located in the bore of the stem and in the bore of the mouthpiece and the flat intermediate por tion being located in the bore of the bushing and said laterally extending lugs engaging in the registering slots of the bushing and mouthpiece and extending into the recess of the stem.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of, a mouthpiece having a bore and having a push portion communicating with said bore and provided with a recess having opposed longitudinally extending slots, and a bored bushing in the recess of the push portion communicating With the bore of the mouthpiece and having opposed longitudinally extending slots registering With the slots of the push portion.
3. In a device of the character described. cooling and clearing device comprising helical end portions and a flat intermediate portion extended at its sides for providing laterally extending lugs.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
