p The present inventionrelates-to nevv and useful improvements in smoking devices and While it has been herein illustratedg'as emf bodied in'a smoking pipe, it is capable of use in other devices such as 'cigerJand' cig Itis the object of the jinventiontoprovide a new and improved typeof coupling {orattaching a bit or mouthpiece to the "smoking; device proper; I v Afeature of the invention resides in a new" and novel construction whereby liquids. Will betrapped and'prevented' from entering the" bit or mouth piece; v
Still a -further feature. of the inventionv resides in :1- novel construction whereby the bit maybe readily attached and detached I With respect to the smoking device.
- The device of the; invention lends? itself,
particularlyto the attachment of bits and mouth pieces to smoking devices in {which themein body portion is formed from meet?- schaum or similar material of moreor less,
. fragile nature. a Other features of the-invention pertainv to, certain novel and improved constructions, arrangements, and cornbination s of parts hereinafter described -end particularly 9 7 pointed out in the-claimsythe"advantages of Qwvhich-Will be readily .under stoodiandlappreciatedbythose skilled in the art. j v The. invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawing-illustrating the invention in its preferred form and the. following detailed description of the: constructions therein shown; I Inethe drawing,;- I j Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly in section showings s'rnokingpipe} the bit of} 0: the pipe-being attached to theybody proper by a couplingconstructed'inaccorolanceWith.

From this point the smoke passes through i the opening 25 into thehollow member 13 and to the bit 7 Any moisture which may be carried in the s smoke will be deposited either in the socket delivery of only dry smoke through the bit 7. By reason of the factthat the sleevev15 is made from relatively thin metal the same may be attached to a stem Without necessitating the removal of any considerable amount of material from which the stem is formed and this feature'is of particularadvantage where, the stem or'ythesmoking device is formed from meerschaum one characteristic of which is brittleness. As indicated byJthe reference character. the walls, of the stem 5 are of-considerable thicknessv at the; point where the sleeveis mounted thereby not de-' tracting from the strength of the stem as is i the case with the couplings of thispipe as ordinarily constructed.
The invention has been in its preferred form but itis to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the particular construction herein shown and that it may beapracticedin such other forms as rightfully fall withinthescope of the appended claim.
Having thus descrl is claimed as new, and what itris' desiredto secure by Letters-Patent of the United" States, is:
A coupling for attaching bits to, the stems of smoking devices said "coupling compris-f ing a sleeve having aninternal and an external thread, said sleeve being receivable in g I a socket in the stem and secured therein by said externalthread, afiared outer end on ofthe stem and flushitherewith, and a con-,
said sleeve adaptedtoseat against the end nectingmembercarried by the bit and projecting therefromysaid connecting member being provided with 'aflthread for threaded engagement with the internal thread of the sleeve and an enlarged. head on'the free end 3 of the coupling membenand adapted toengage the inner surface of the inner end of the sleeve when the bit and stem are in assembled position.
