, iug how UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSKAR WARTEMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y., ASSIGNOR TO TRAUN RUBBER COMPANY OF COLLEGE POINT, NEW YORK, A. CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
' MOUTHPIEGE FOR SMOKING-PIPES.
'Mouthpieces for SmokingPipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved mouth piece for smoking pipes.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved mouth piece for tobacco smoking pipes, which is strong, durable and simple in construction.
In the accompanying drawings in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved pipe stem or mouth piece. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of a stem that is circular in section.
The mouth piece 1 is made of hard rubber and is either circular in cross section as shown in Fig. 3 or is oval or of a similar shape as shown in Fig. 2. vAt its inner end it is provided with a neck 2 which isof less diameter than the mouth piece and fits in the bore of a stem connected with the pipe bowl in the. usual manner. A shoulder or ofi'set 3 is formed at the base of theneck 2. A groove 4 of about ofan inch in depth, more or less, is formed in the shoulder 3, one side of said groove 4 forming a continuation of the neck 2 so that the base of the neck is a short distance beyond the shoulder 3. The mouth piece 1 is provided with the usual bore 5 which also extends centrally through the neck 2. The mouth pieces as usually formed are provided with a neck 2 which projects from the shoulder but does not extend inward beyond the shoulder as described above. Such necks break oif v very readily when the pipe is seized by the mouth iece and the bowl tapped on a hard object for the purpose of knocking out the ashes and it is surpriseasily they hreak off. This has been a-matter of great inconvenience and great loss to the manufacturers of pipes.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Application filed July 1, 1915. Serial No. 37,475.
Patented Mar. '7, 1916.
My improvedmouth'piece does not break off even under the application of exceptionally great strength as evidenced by thousands of tests that have been made with my improved mouth piece provided with the groove as described above and the ordinary mouth pieces;
, It is immaterial what cross section the mouth piece has. The groove 4 is of the same shape as the outside of the neck and one side of this groove is formed by the exterior of the neck.
The mouth piece may also be made of celluloid, composition, bone or other suitable material.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A month piece for a tobacco pipe having at the inner end a neck of less diameter than the body of the mouth piece, a groove being formed adjacent to the base end of said neck where it projects fromthe body of the mouth piece, said groove being formed in the shoulder at'the junction of the body and the neck, the inner wall of the groove being a continuation of the outer surface of the neck, substantially as set forth.
-2. A mouth piece for tobacco pipes having-at one end a neck of less diameter than the body of the mouth piece, a shoulder formed adjacent to the base of said neck, a groovev formed in the shoulder around the base of the neck, the inner wall of said groove being a continuation of the outer surface-of the neck, whereby the junction of the neck with the body is at a point a greater distance from the free end of the neck than the distance from the free end of the neck to the said shoulder, substantially as set forth.
