Description
W. J. WHITE PENCIL CLIP Fil ed Feb. 5, 1923 F751 INVE'A/TU/P W. J. WHITE A TT YS Patented May 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.-
WILLIAM J". WHITE, OF SAN FRANCISCO,
CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM H. GILBERT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
PENCIL CLIP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. lVHI'lE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the countyof San Francisco and State of Californiznhave invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil Clips,.of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for holding pencils and pens in pockets which devices are commonly known as pencil holders.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a pencil holder of such construction that the pencil may be very-quickly and easily inserted in the clip and will be effectively held against accidental withdrawal or dropping out of the clip. 7
Another object is to provide a holder of the character described which is small, inexpensive and capable of being easily attached to a pocket and which will be inconspicuous and not likely to damage or tear the cloth.
lVith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 represents a fragmentary front elevation of a pocket showing a holder attached thereto with a pencil held therein, the pencil being shown in dotted lines in a position from which it may be moved so as to engage in the holder.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a blank from which the holder is formedf Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the holder, being broken away for the sake of clearness of illustration.
Fig. 4c is a rear elevation of the holder.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the holder.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the holder.
The holder of my invention is constructed from a single piece of thin resilient sheet Application filed February 5,1923. Serial No. 616,983.
of metal of any suitable kind and is of such arrangement that it may be readily stamped first into the blank form shown in Fig. 2 and then bent into the shape of the holder as otherwise shown in the drawing. The blank as shown in Fig. 2 comprises an elongated strip 1 having projecting from one side thereof near one end, a shorter similar strip 2. The strip 1 is doubled intermediate of its ends so as to provide resilient jaw members 3 and 4 between which the outer wall 5 of the pocket A, of a vest or coat, is received. The jaw t at its outer end is provided with inwardly and upwardly extending teeth 6 lying between the jaws 3 and 4, which teeth are adapted to bite into the cloth so as to secure the holder againstaccidental removal after it has been clipped upon the outer wall of the pocket. The jaw .3 is curveddownwardly and outwardly and extendsbelow the lower end of the aw 4, said jaw 3 being disposed on the inner side of the pocket. Due to the curvature of the jaw 3, the cloth is forced outwardly against the teeth. The strip 2 is bent and curved so that it extends rearwardly of the jaw 3 in the form of an arcuate sprin clip 7, the outer end of which extends away from the wall 3 and is flared as at 8. The clip 7 in being open on its side, is adapted to receive a pencil which is moved laterally into the clip. The clip may be bent into position to grip the pencil suiiiciently to hold the same regardless of the size ofthe pencil.
The holder is attached as shown in Fig. 1 at one corner of the pocket by being pushed downwardly upon the wall 5 of the pocket with said wall engaging between the jaws 3 and 4. A pen or pencil after being inserted in the pocket may be quickly and easily moved into the holder by simply moving the pencil towards the end of the pocket to which the holder is fastened, the flared end of the clip 7 permits the pencil to snap into the clip and the pencil will be clamped between the clip 7 and jaw 3. To remove the pencil it is pulled straight upwardly and readily slips out of the holder. One of the essential points of advantage is thatthe pencil does not have to be accurately inserted into the clip but may be secured by a simple lateral movement thereof towards the clip.
I claim:
A pencil clip comprising opposed resilient jaws joined at their upper ends and spaced apart at their lower ends, between which 5 jaws the outer wall of a garment pocket may be clamped, and a resilient member carried by and extending laterally across one of said jaws with its outer end curved outwardly away from said jaw, one oi said jaws being longer than the other and having its outer end curved inwardly towards the other jaw and teeth on the shorter jaw extending towards the longer jaw.
WILLIAM J. lVHlTE.
