To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AxnL S. ELIASSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of the city of New York, Corona, borough of Queens, in the county of ing an instrumentalitysuch as a fountain pen or lead pencil in an upright condition in themselves from the outside,

a pocket of a garment.

Devices'of the character mentloned heretofore produced include a member having claws or prongs which impale themselves n a portion forming a pocket of the garment 1n which the fountain pen or pencil is disposed, and these'prongs or claws usually impale and the pocket portions of thegarment frequently are torn or cut by the prongs or claws in the removal of the clip. It has also been found that owing to the use of prongs or claws it is difficult to withdraw the same from the portion of the pocket which they impale.

It is therefore the prime object of the present invention to produce a retainer clip which will overcome the above mentioned disadvantages. 7

Another object of the invention is the pro duct-ion of a, retainer clip which is made up from a single piece of material so that great quantities can be produced cheaply and with a minimum amount of time and labor in the production of the finished article from the blanks from which the articles are formed.

WVith the foregoing, other objects of the invention will appear from the embodiments of the invention which by way of example are described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying draw ing, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view through the preferred form of retainer clip ofthe present invention and showing the manner in which it is used to support an instrumental ity such as a fountain pen or lead pencil on the wall of a pocket of a garment.

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be apparent that, the preferred form of retainer clip is stamped, bent and formed from a single piece of material. The blank produced is shown in Fig. 4 and consists of a narrow elongated body portion 10 fromwhich extend a pair of lateral portions 11, and a pair of lateral portions 12 substantially at a point midway of the ends of the body 10. Near one end of the body 10 there is a pair of prongs or claws 13 and an offset extremity 14:. In the formation of the retainer clip the portion 15 of the body 10 will be bent substantially on the line 16 to provide

17 and 18, whereas, the portion 19 of the body 10 will be bent substantially on the

lines

20 and 21 to produce the bight 22 and member 23. The portions 11 are bent substantially at a right angle to the plane of the body 10, and the portions 12 are similarly bent, except that the latter are made arcuate to conform to the cross sectional shape of the barrel of a fountain pen or the body of a lead pencil. The prongs or claws 13 are also bent substantially at a right angle with respect to the body 10.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that the finished retainer clip will consist of attaching means in the form of the portions 12 by virtue of which the clip is associated with a fountain pen or pencil, supporting means comprising the

18 and 23, and the prongs or claws 13; the

18 and 23 being flexible and capable of setting up a clamping action due to the fact that the blank from which the retainer clip is made is preferably of spring metal;

that the portions 11 serve as a means for 1 forcing portions of the pocket from the prongs 13 when the member 18 is flexed by the manipulation of the offset extremity 14f inwardly toward the member 17. It has been found that where prongs or claws are employed in attempting to remove the clip, the prongs or claws usually carry the portion of the pocket which they impale with them in the flexing of the member which .carries the prongs or claws. In the present construction the portions 11 will confront the portions of the pocket impaled and upon further movement of the member 18 the portions of the pocket impaled will be held while the prongs 13 are readily freed of the portions of the pocket.

The retaining clip shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is substantially similar structurally and functionally to the retainer clip described hereinabove. The differences in the clip shown in Figs. 5 and 6 are the provision of a single prong or claw 25 upstruck from the member 18', and the provision of an opening 26 in the bight 22 which is wider than the other portions of the body from which the

17, 18 and 23 are formed. Provision is therefore made to per mit the extremity 27 to be extended through the opening 26 to constitute means for manipulatingthe member 18 for withdrawing the prong or claw 25 from impalement.

It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the precise construction and relative disposition of the parts shown and described, as changes and .=alterations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is limited only by the terms of the claims hereunto appended.

I claim:

1. A retaining clip comprising holding means by virtue of which an instrumentality is releasably held, a supporting member which carries the holding means, supporting means by virtue of which the retaining clip is supported in connection with a portion of a pocket of a garment, said supporting means comprising coactive clamping members; impaling means which impales itself into said portion of the pocket for holding the retaining clip against being detached from said portion of the pocket, said impaling means being carried by one of said clamping members, and disengaging means for disengaging the impaling means to permitthe detachment oi. the retaining clip, said disengaging means being carried by said supporting member with respect to which the clamping member having the impaling means is movable for the disengaging operation.

A retaining clip comprising holding means by virtue-of which an instrumentality is releasably held, a supporting member, supporting means by virtue of which the retaining clip is supported in connection with a portion of a pocket of a garment, impaling means which impales itself into said portion of the pocket for holding the retaining clip against being detached from said portion of the pocket, and disengaging means for disengaging the impaling means to permit the detachment of the retaining clip. said supporting means consisting oi? relatively flexible clamping members carried by said supporting member, one of said clamping members carrying said impaling means, said disengaging means being carried by said supporting member with respect to which the clamping member having the impaling means is movable for the disengaging operation. 4

A retaining clip comprising holding means by virtue of which an instrumentalitv is releasably held, a supporting member, supporting means by virtue of which the retaining clip is supported in connection with a portion of a pocket of a garment, impahng means which impales itself into said portion of the pocket for holding the retaining clip against being detached from said portion of the pocket, and disengaging means for disengaging the impaling means to permit the detachment of the retaining chp, said supporting means consisting o l relatively flexible clamping members carried by said supporting member, one of said clamping members carrying said impaling means, said disengaging means consisting 01 a member carried by said supporting member and capable of holding said portion of the pocket while the clamping member havipg the impaling means is being flexed for disengaging the retaining clip from said portion of the pocket.

6. For forming a retaining clip. a blank of material cut to provide a body. two pairs of lateral portions, prongs extending from the side edges of said bodv. and an oil set extremity on one end of said body.

7. For forming a retaining clip. a blank of spring metal cut to provide a narrow elongated body, two pairs of lateral portions substantially at a point midwav of the ends of the body, :1 prong extending from the body near one end thereof, said body having an opening therein.
