GUARD FOR GRINDING WHEELS.
Application filed. April 15, 1922. "serial in. 552,027.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. CoNNnLL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guardsfor Grinding \Vheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in guards for grinding wheels, and has for its object the provision of a simple and adjustable unitary guard for the periphery al'ldsides of emery wheels and the like.
Users of grinding wheels commonly are required to comply with the provisions demanding the protectionof the operative by means of a peripheral guard which shall be adjustable as the wheel wears away. Moreover, it is a common requirement that the shaft end or side of the emery wheel, which normally is exposed, shall be bored or suitably protected.
Accordingly, I have sought to provide the simplest unitary means whereby these fea tures of protection are afforded in a cheap, simple and adjustable guard.
The details of construction and further advantages may best be explained by making reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View in side elevatioi'l. of a 3 t: ments are applied,
Fig. an a front elevation of said mechanism partially broken away, and Fig. 3 is a small elevation.
'lhrOughout the drawings I have employed the same character of reference to indicate theshowing of identical parts.
self-contained grinding mechanism, comprising an electric motor a and, preferably, two syn'nnetrically positioned, counterbalancing wheels Z) of emery, carborundum or the like, are shown in the drawings for the purpose of explaining my improvements as applied thereto.
A. fixed peripheral wheel. casing 0 is shown positioned at the left of the motor foraccommodating the grinding wheel I); this casing being open at the front and side. An adjustable supportalfor the article being ground is positioned upon a bracket (2 carried by the lower portion of the motor casing.
An adjustable guard e,
rinding mechanism to which my in'iprove termediate boxing c terminally slotted at c, is mountednpon casing 0 by means of thumb-nuts 6'. This guard comprises an in adapted to accommodate the securing nut a" at the end of the motor shaft, and the angularly extending peripheral guard 7 adapted to form a barrier at the top of the grinding wheel.
Thus the adjustable guard comprises a suitable boxing for the exposed face of the wheel as well an adjustable barrier which may be positioned at successively lower levels to conform with the periphery of'said grinding wheel as 1t wears away with use. However, thediametricall y positioned guard a, while in'mriably n'otecting the end of the shaft mounting the grinding wheel, leaves the side of the wheel exposed for lateral grinding thereon. Moreover, as the guard e and the transversely extending peripheralguard f are integrally formed, there isno chance that one of these members may be forgotten or accidentally displaced when adjustments are required.
It is obvious that these parts may be dif ferently proportioned and mounted, but the adjustable guard preferably combines the protective features for the periphery and shaft or mounting of the grinding wheel along the general lines above explained, con-- formable with my invention.
Having now described the advantages and structural details pertaining to my invention, 1 claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following: i
1.. The con'ibination with. a grinding'wheel,
of a main guard casing conforming to and nesting over a greater portion of the periphery of said grinding wheel and exposing a portion of said wheel for grinding purposes, a supplemental guard support upon the end of said main guard and including means for guiding it radially with respect to said wheel, a laterally extending guard plate carried by said supplemental guard support and extending toward the wheel at the end of the main guard, and means for clamping said supplemental guard support in any adjusted position.
2. The combination with a grinding wheel shaft, a wheel and a nut for holding said wheel upon the shaft of a main guard nesting about the periphery of the greater portion of said wheel, and a nut guard member in the form of a strap removably secu red to the main guard or opposite sides of said nut.
The combination with a grinding device, comprising a shaft, a wheel and a nut for holding said wheel upon said shaft, of a main guard nesting about a portion of the periphery of said wheel, a supplemental guard for one end of said main guard and comprising a solid strap extending diametrically across the main guard and over said nut, means for clamping said strap in place, and a supplemental guard plate carried by said strap and adapted for movement along the end of the main guard toward and from the periphery of the wheel as it wears.
4-. The combination with a grinding device comprising a shaft, a wheel and a nut for holding said wheel upon said shaft, of a main guard nesting about a portion of the periphery of said wheel, a supplemental guard extending along one side of said wheel and over said nut, and a supplen'iental guard plate carried by said supplemental guard and adapted for movement toward and from the periphery of said grinding wheel.
In testimony whereof I do now atlix my signature.
EDXVIN L. CONNELL.
