A'fi-UNITED STATES ROY D. DOUGLASS, OIF IVIINNEAPOLIS,` MINNESOTA.
SPRING COMPRESSOR.
Application filed February 20, 1924. Serial No. 694,022.
lTo all whom 'it may concern.'
i citizen of the United States, residingat Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Compressors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable. others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention provides an extremely simple and highly eiiicient spring compressor for use in removing springs from the rods of puppet valves used in internal combustion engines. Generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indi` cate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. l is a side elevation showing the improved spring compressor; j
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line Q-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the spring compressor, some parts being broken away;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 1H-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective showing one of the spring-engaging prongs of the yoke; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective showing a device adapted to receive and hold the removed spring in compressed condition.
The main element o-f the spring compressor is in the form of a three-sided yoke 7 made up of a pair of metallic straps con nected by rivets 8 and having at the lower portion of the yoke diverging prongs adapt ed to be sprung apart and equipped with spring-engagir'igv flanges 9 and spring'guiding plates' 10. Ihese spring' prongs are' adapted to be adjusted to the'diameter of diiferent springs within certain limit of vari# ation. Rigidly secured to the upper portion of. the yoke 7 is a head block .11, provided with a spring-engaging arm 12. A springsl compressina rod 13 works vertically through the head bltock 11 .51nd, just below said head block, is provided with a collar 14 that is" adjustably secured thereto by a set screw 15. The upper ends of the straps that form the yoke 7 are projected upward at 7 and a levery 16 is pivoted thereto at 17. The lever 16 is connected by links 18 to the collar 14. The upper end of the rod 13 is turned out` ward and downward to a point where it overlies a spring-centering lug 12 on the arm 12 and this downturned end of said rod is provided with a diametrically projecting spring-engaging pin 19.
The rod 13 can be adjusted through the collar 14 for different lengths of spring to be compressed. By oscillatory movements of the lever 16, the collar 14 and, hence, the rod 13, may be moved vertically, and by this action, the coiled spring can be compressed between the arm 12 and the pin 19. Then the spring is completely compressed, the lever 16 and links 18 will be turned slightly inward of a dead center. thereby forming a self-locking device. Then the spring is compressed, .it is adapted to be engaged by the flanges 2O of retaining plates 21 secured to the ends of a U-shaped metal strap 22.
In compressing a spring that is applied around a valve stem, the lower end of the rod 13 can be rested on any suitable support, such as the cylinder casting, and the flanges 9, being then engaged under the spring and the lever 16 being then moved downward, such spring will be compressed, so that it may be engaged and held by the device shown in Fig. 6.
That I claim is:
A. spring compressor comprising a three= sided yoke formed at its lower portion with spring 'prongs provided with spring-engaging flanges, the upper portion of said yoke' being extended upward, a lever pivoted to' the upper extensions4 of said yoke, aguide block rigidly secured to the upper`portion of saidyoke, a rod slidable through said guide block, a spring-engaging arm project#l ing from said guide block, said rod having an offset end overlying said arm and coop! erating therewith to compress aspring a collar adjustably secured to said rod, and a link connection between said collar and said lever. p j
In testimony whereof I affix my isignature.
