UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE ATWOOD, OE sToNI'NG'ToN, CONNECTICUT, AssIGNoE. To ATwoon MACHINE COMPANY, OP sToNINCToN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OT NEW JERSEY.
SPINNING ANE TwIsTTNG SPINDLE Application mea March 9, 1922. serial No. 542,349.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE ATWooD,-a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have `invented av new and useful Improvement in Spinning and Twisting -Spindles, of which the following is a specification'.
lThe object of my invention is to provide l0 certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts of a self oiling spindleof the step and bolster type, whereby a thorough lubrication of the step and bolster bearings is obtained.
My invention more particularly comprises a self oiling spindle of the` step and bolster type in which a removable cylindrical cup which forms an o-il reservoir, surrounds the step bearin portion and a. removable tube surrounds t e uprising bolster bearing portion of the case.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 represents the spindle in side elevation.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section aken in the plane of the line II-II of Fig. 3 represents a cross section taken in the plane of the line III- III of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents a cross section taken in the plane of the line .IV-IV of Fig. 2.
The spindle blade 1 is provided with the usual whirl 2. The support for the spindle comprises the case 3, having a depending step bearing portion 4 and an uprising bolster bearing portion 5. An uprising tube 6 surrounds the bolster bearing portion 5 and, in the present instance, is spaced therefrom by providing an annular series of lugs 7 projecting from the bolster bearing portion near its top, the bottom of the tube 6 snugly fitting over the enlarged base of the bolster bearing portion and resting on the top of the spindle rail flange 8 of the case 3. Oil circulating holes 9 lead through the side wall of the bolster bearing portion 5.
A cylindrical oil cup 10 surrounds the step bearing portion 4 and has an interior screw threaded engagement 11 therewith, Just beneath the fiange 8. An oil tight joint is ensured between the oil cup and step bearing portion by providing the step bearing portion with a. conical seat 12 arranged to have an extended engagement with a conical shoulder 13 in the bore of the cup 10. The step bearing portion 4 is preferably tapered below the conical portion l2, leaving an `oil chamber 14 of,substantial size within the cup 10, the bottom of which extends a short distance below the bottom of the step bearing portion. A vertically elongated oil circulating port 15 extends through the wall of the step bearing portion 4. This cup 10 is provided with an exteriorly-screw threaded portion 16 near its bottom fdr the reception of the nut 17 between which nut and the spindle rail, therusual coil spring 18. may be inserted for yieldingly securing the spindle case to the rail.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided an oil reservoir of novel form in the bottom of which, below the step bearing, any sediment or foreign matter may collect, and which may be ver)T readily removed and rep-laced.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is: l. A self oiling spindle of the step and bolster type comprising a case having bolster and step bearing portions, a removable oil cup surrounding the step bearin portion, and va removable tube surroun ing and spaced from the bolster bearing portion.
2. A self oiling spindle of the step and bolster type comprising a case having bolster and step bearing portions, a removable oil cup .surrounding the step bearing por tion, a removable tube surrounding and spaced from the bolster. bearing portion, and oil ports through the walls of the step and bolster bearing portions.
3. A self oiling' spindle of the step and Las hem-ing portion, und oil ports. through the 'Wells of the bolster and step bearing por- 10 tions.
ln testimony, that l cla-im the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 7th. dey of March 1922.
EUGENE ATWOOD.
