` Be it known that LEUGENEi'mwooD, a kcitizen of the United yStates, and resident oi? Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a iiev.7 and useful Improvement iii Spinning and Twisting Spindles, 01": which the `following is a specification. A
The object ofiny linvention is to provide certain improvements in the coiisti'instiou, form and arrangement of the several parts ot' a seli oiliiig spindle `of the step and bolster type, whereby a thorough lubrication of the step and bolster bearings is obtained.
My .invention more particularly comprises a self oiling spindle of the step and bolster type in which the base is provided with a depending step bearing portion from which luprise a bolster kbearing tube and an outside tube, the outside tube being spaced trein the bolster tube to form an oil reservoir, and the bolster tube `having one or more holes between its top and bottom to permitthe Circulation of the oil. The outside tube is preferably extended `upwardly beyond the top of the bolster tube to prevent theoverflow of thefoil. The bolster tube is preferably provided with a series of holes at dilferent heights between its top and bottoni tov ensure the proper lubrication of the spindle blade in the bolster tube, one of the holes y leading from the bottom of the reservoir v into a chamber formed at the top of the step bearing orensuring the proper lubricationV of the step bearing.

The support for the spindle is shown as comprising a base l provided with a depending step bearing portion 2 having a three step bore 3, 4 and 5. The smallest bore 3 forms the step bearing for the spindle blade 6. The bottom ofthe uprising bolster bearing tube 7 is seated in the next larger bore al ot the base.` The bottoni ot the uprising outside tube 8 is seated in the largest bore 5 oi the base, which outside tube is spaced Ytrein the bolster tube to 'torni between' them an oil reservoir,` This outside tube eX- tends beyond the top et the bolster tube so as' to 'prevent the oil troni flowing over Vthe top of the outside tube as it is littedby the spindle above the top oi the bolster tube. , The bolster tube is provided with a series y of holes l0 between its top and bottomat dilferent heights to ypermit the circulation of the oil and the proper lubrication of f the spindle blade. The lowermost of these holes l0 leads from the bottom of the reservoir into the oil chamber 9 so as to ensure the proper lubrication of the step bearing.
The spindle is provided with the usual sleeve whirl 11 which surrounds and is spaced from the outside tube 8 and the spindle support. y
It will be seen' that when the spindle' is in operation, the oil will be caused to flow upwardly between thev spindle blade and bolster tube and through the vholes lO-in the v n bolster tube to thoroughly lubricate .the spindle blade; lt willalso be seen that the chamber at the top 0I" the step bearing is also kept full of oil from the reservoir so as to thoroughly lubricate the step bearing. The extension of the outside tube beyond the top of the bolster tube prevents any overflow of the oil which passes over the topof the bolster tube. lt will thus be seen that avery simple `arv rangement is provided forthe circulation of theoil without requiring a special form of spindle or whirl and without changing the step and bolster bearings for the spindle.
