THE GRAPHIC COJHUTOUHLSBSH' PARK FLACEJLY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK J. SEYMOUR, OF WOLCOTTVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND TURNER AND SEYMOUR MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF
SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-NAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,500, dated July 28, 1874 application filed July 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. SEY- MOUR, of Wolcottville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Knobs for Pictures, Curtains, 850., of which the following is a specification Nails have been made for hanging pictures, and an ornamental head has been screwed upon such nail; but the wall is liable to be injured by the nail, and such nail is unsupported. Knobs have been substituted for the nails, and such knobs have been attached by screws passing through them. The screw, however, has to be long, and the head is exposed, and hence the same should be made ornamental. In other cases knobs have had the screws fastened into them, but the knob has to be revolved in rotating the screw. A disk has been attached by a screw, and then an ornaniental cover screwed to the edge of the disk, and an ornamental head has been made with a cavity at the back and placed upon a knob attached by a screw.
My invention consists in a conical base at tached by a central screw, and having a screwthrcad around the smaller and outer end of the base, in combination with an ornamental head having a metallic back contracted to a shank, with a central opening that fits upon the screw-thread of the base.
By this construction the head can be made of glass, or other ornamental material, and. firmly connected to the base after that is screwed in place.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section of the knob complete, and Fig. 2 is a detached section of the base.
The base a is made of metal, in a circular and conical form, more or less ornamental, with a hole in it for the attaching-screw b to pass through. This screw is to be of an ordinary character, so as to be adapted to the plastering or woodwork to which the base and knob are to be connected. A screw-thread is out upon the base around the central portion at 35, contiguous to the opening for the screw, and said screw receives the ornamental knob e. The knob e is made with a metal back having a shank, 4, with a screw-thread to fit the screwthread 3, so that after the base ahas been screwed to place the ornamental head can be screwed to the base a, and will be very firm and strong.
The bases can be changed relatively to the knobs, and the knobs relatively to the bases, so as to bring together any desired bases and ornamental heads or knobs.
In place of the screw to connect the knob and base, a bayonet-lock might be substituted.
I claim as my invention The conical base a, with an opening for the screw 1), and a screw-thread around the smaller and outer end, in combination with the ornamental head, metallic back, and screw-shank 4, as set forth.
Signed by me this 27th day of June, 1874.
FREDERICK J. SEYMOUR.
