X MASSAGE DEVICE.
Application led November 20, 1923. Serial No. 675,894.
controlled from the interior temperature of the device. v A As a further object 'the invention contemplates a means which'is especially designed for lowering the internal temperature of a device of this character in order to cool the massaging surface or surfaces without the use of ice which is not. always available and which oders certain inconveniences in -connection with its handling.
More specifically the invention .contemplates amember having a .hollow body into which removable containers are adapted to be insertedthat contain a substance'which when released into the body functions to lower the temperature thereof for cooling one or more of the surfaces, together with means operable from the exterior of the body for establishing communication between said i container and the interior of the body.
As a further object the invention contemplates a device of the character set forth which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which is highly leiiicient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention `resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out. in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are ex- `pressed.
In the drawings y vFigure 1 is a plan view of the means incorporated in a massaging device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with the cover of the device removed. v
Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged sectional view taken approximately on the line of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view of the cartridge or container member removed.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates the body of a hollow receptacle, the open end of which is closed by a cover 11 carrying a suitable gasket 12 for sealing the device against entrance or escape of fluids. Within the body a pair of internally threaded bosses 13 are formed in which screws 14 are anchored, which extend through the cover for securing the y cover in place and impinging the gasket on the edge of the body. At one end the body is formed with a recess 15 which has communication with the interior by means of an opening 16, the diameter of which is less than the diameter of the recess whereby a shoulder 17 is formed. The outer end of the recess is interiorly threaded as at 18 to receive a screw plug 19. The annular gasket 20 is positioned against the shoulder and is adapted to have forced thereagainst by the- -screw plug 19 the annular bead 21 of the closure cap 22 of a cartridge or receptacle 23, the opposite e'ndfof which cartridge 1s formed with a semi-spherical head. rllhe semi-spherical head is provided with an axial opening 24 and isprovided with an inwardly extending boss 25 constituting a Valve seat. A valve 26 is arranged'with the cartridge or receptacle 23 and is normally pressed by a springn27 into contact with the seat 25 whereby the opening 24 is sealed.
The cartridge or receptacle 23 is adapted to Y contain a suitable substance S Vsuch for example as sulphur dioxide which when released therefrom expands in the form of a vapor for setting up :a cooling action. The cartridge or receptacle 23 is insertedthrough the vopening 16 with the bead`or rim 21 resting against the gasket 20. 'Ihe screw plug is then employed to retain the cartridge in vplace and at the same time set up an impinging action of the rim or bear against the gasket for sealing the opening 16 against the entrance orv exit of fluid. In order to provide means for establishing communication between the interior of the cartridge or receptacle 23 and the interior of the body 10 which is operable from the exterior of the body, an opening 29 is formed in the body at a point diametrically opposite the opening' 16. The screw is provided with an externally disposed knurled head 30 and is formed at its inner end with an axially extending shank 31. A pin 32 having a peripheral longitudinal groove 33 is arranged in the opening 24 of the cartridge. The free terminal of the shank 31 is normally disposed slightly out of contact with the pin 32. Preferably the shank adjacent its free terminal is guided by an opening 311 in a cross bar 35, the opposite ends of which cross bar are received in grooves 36' in the bosses 13.
In use and operation after the body is sealed and the cartridge is positioned and sealed in place as illustrated in Fig. 3, the operator manipulates the screw head 30 to move the shank 31 into contact with the lpin 32 which is thus forced into engagement with the valve head 26 for unseating the same from the seat or boss 25 against' the action of the spring 27. The groove 33 inthe pin 32 thus establishes communication between the interior of the cartridge and the interior of the body 10 whereby the sub- -stance S is released and expands to lower the internal temperature of the body, thereby cooling the operating surface of the body. After the expanded vapor or substance S has expended its energy, and the device has performed its function, thecartridge or container 23 may be readily removed by unscrewing the plug 29 for reinsertion of a new cartridge. The cartridges or containers may be refilled through the valved end or by removing the closure caps 22.
I claim:
1. A massage device comprising a hollow receptacle having an external socket -in one side thereof and an opening establishing from, and a threaded element projecting.
through the wall of the receptacle at a point. diametrically opposite the socket, said element having an exterior manipulating head -for eecting axial movement of the grooved pin inwardly in the valved opening whereby to open the same to permit of the escape of the contents of the container into the interior of the receptacle.
2. A massage device comprising a hollow body having an open end, a gasketed cover fitted thereovcr, said receptacle having diametrically disposed openings in the side walls, a container partiallyinsertable in one of the openings, means for sealing the conv tainer in place in said opening, an expansible substance in said container adapted upon release into the receptacle to change'the temperature of said receptacle, an element extending through the other opening and axially movable therethrough, said element being operable from the exterior for releasing the contents of the container into the interior of the receptacle.
