.1. HORRIDGE 'COMBILNIG MACHINE Filed Feb. 1924 ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 21, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HORRIDGE, OF BOLTON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR '10 JOHN HETHERINGTON AND SONS LIMITED, 01? MANCHESTER, LANCASTER, ENGLAND.
columns MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Honmnun, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 71 estbourne Avenue, Bolton, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combing Machines, of which the following is a specification. w The invention relates to improvements in machines for combing cotton, wool and the like and has for its object to provide im proved mechanism for lifting the top comb at the times desired, the amount of such lift and the time at which it takes place and the duration thereof being capable of adjustment at will.
For this purpose the top comb arm is pi votally mounted upon the nipper leg and upon said nipper legis also pivotally mounted a bell crank lever one arm of which is adapted to impinge upon an adjustable projection carried by the comb arm. I
In the backward motion of the nipper leg or arm'an antifriction roller or bowl or the like carried by said bell crank lever is adapted to come in contact with an adjustable stop secured to the frame of the machine whereby the bell crank lever is swung about its centre or pivot and the comb arm is lifted by the other arm of the bell crank lever, the required amount of lift and the time thereof being regulated by adjusting the stop upon the frame and the projection carried by the comb arm upon which the bell crank lever impinges.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, broken away, of a mechanism constructed in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of so much of a combing machine as is necessary to illustrate the relation of the improved mechanism thereto.
Referring to the drawings, l represents the top comb arm, which is pivotally mounted at 1 upon the nipper leg 2. A bell crank lever 3 is pivotally mounted upon said nipper leg at 3* said lever having arms 3 and 3, the arm 3 being provided at its extremity with an antifriction roller 4 or its equivalent.
Upon the frame 5 of the machine is an adjustable stop 6 carried by an arm 6 having a slot 6' and secured in position by a set screw 7. Said stop 6 instead of being vertically arranged may be inclined to any desired angle or it may be curved or otherwise formed as desired.
7 In the backward motion of the nipper arm the roller 4 impinges upon the stop 6 and its motion is arrested thereby, thus causing the bell crank lever 3 to swing or move upon its centre or pivot 3 in such manner that the arm 3* of said bell crank lever 3 impinges upon a set screw 1, or it might be any other suitable adjustable projection carried by the comb arm 1 and raises said comb arm 1 and therefore the top comb as desired.
I In order to vary the amount of lift imparted to the comb arm 1 the set screw l may be adjusted as desired while in order to vary the time of such lifting movement the stop 6 may, by releasing the set screw 7, be moved forward or backward within the limits of the slot 6".
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a combing machine, the combination of a reciprocable nipper leg, a top comb arm pivotally secured to said leg, means carried by said nipper leg and movable thereon for swinging said comb arm on its pivot, and operating means in a plane parallel to that in which the nipper leg reciprocates for moving said comb-arm-swinging means thereby to lift thearm.
2. In a combing machine, the combination of a reciprocable nipper leg, a top comb arm pivotallysecured to said leg, means carried by said nipper leg and movable thereon for swinging said comb arm on its pivot, and operating means in a plane parallel to that in which the nipper leg reciprocates for moving said comb-arm-swinging means thereby to lift the arm, said operating means being adjustable thereby to vary the time of operation of the comb-arm-swinging means.
3. In a combing machine, the combination of a reciprocable nipper leg, a top comb arm pivotally secured to said leg, means pivotally carried by said nipper leg for swinging said comb arm on its pivot, and operating means in a plane parallel to that in which the nipper leg reciprocates for moving said combarm-swinging means thereby to lift the arm.
4:. In a combing machine, the combination of a reciprocable nipper leg, a top comb arm pivotally secured to said leg, means pivotally carried by said nipper leg for swinging said a comb arm on its pivot, adjustable means carrieol by the comb arm and normally in engagement with said pivoted means for varying the swinging movement of said arm, and operating means in a plane parallel to that in which the nipper leg reciprocates for swinging said pivoted means thereby to lift the arm.
5. In a combing machine, the combination of a reciprocable nipper leg, a top comb arm pivotally secured to said leg, means pivotally carried by said nipper leg for swinging said comb arm on its pivot, adjustable means carried by the comb arm and normally in engagement with said pivoted means for varying the swinging movement of said arm, and operating means in a plane parallel to that in which the nipper leg reciprocates for swinging said pivoted means thereby to lift the arm, said operating means being'adjustable thereby to vary the time of operation of the pivoted means.
6. In a combing machine, the combination of a reciprocable nipper leg. a top comb arm pivotally secured to said leg, a bell crank lever pivotally carried by the nippcr leg, means carried by said comb arm in engagement with one arm of said lever, and means in a plane parallel to that in which the nipper leg reciprocates for engaging the other arm of said lever thereby to swing the same on its pivot and lift said comb arm.
7. In a combing machine, the combination of a reciprocable nipper leg, a top comb arm pivotally secured to said leg, a bell crank lever pivotally carried by the nippcr leg, adjustable means carried by said comb arm in engagement with one arm of said lever, and adjustable means in a plane parallel to that in which the nipper leg reciprocates for engaging the other arm of said lever thereby to swing the same on its pivot and lift said comb arm.
8. In a combing machine, the combination of a reciprocable nippcr leg, a top comb arm pivotally secured to said leg, a bell crank lever pivotally carried by the nippcr leg, an adjustable member carried by the comb arm in engagement with one arm of said lever, and a stop member in a plane parallel to that in which the nippcr leg reciprocates and adjustable toward and from the leg for engaging the other arm of said lever thereby to swing the same on its pivot and lift said comb arm.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JAMES HORRIDGE.
