To all 'whom it may' concern:
Be it known that I. ARTHUR A'rwATnR KENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ardmore, county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loud Speakers, of which the following is aspecification. My invention relatesto loudspeakers, such as telephones provided with amplifying horns utilizable in radio receiving apparatus and other relations.
This application is a division from my application SerialNumber 710240', filed May 1, 1924.
My invention resides in structure ofthe character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one of the various forms my invention may take, referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring-tothe drawing. H is the telephone housing, preferably of vcast metalasa die casting` closed at one end by the member 1, integral with which is the neck 2 hav'- ing the sound passage 3 .registering with the sound passage 4 in the hornv section S, preferably of cast metal, and provided at its lower end with the integral sleeve 5 which receives the neck 2, whereby the horn as a whole is supported directly and rotatable upon the telephone housing H.
At its end opposite to the end closure 1 the housing H is open, and interiorly threaded to receive the cxteriorly threaded cap C, or second housing member, preferably of molded insulating material, within which is carried the telephone magnet system comprising 4the permanent magnet M having the pole pieces 6, 6,l upon which are disposed themagnet coils 7, 7, whose terminals connect with the binding posts 8, 8,'with 4which connect the terminals 9, 9 of the vflexible telephone cord 10 extendig through the central apery ture 11 in the cap C. Disposed in the upper end of the housing H is the telephone diaphragm T, controlled by the magnet system, and held between the resilient washers 12, 12 confined by the metal ring or- Washer 13 pressed upwardly by the undulating spring 14 engaging the upper or inner end of the cap C, which latter by rotation with respect to the housing H advances or recedes, thereby adjusting the poles 6 with respect to the diaphragm T and adjusting the pressure exerted by the spring 14 upon the outer mar- ,gin of the diaphragm T.
The telephone structure utilized may be of any suitable type or character, and the structure above described is merely an example of one of various forms which may be utilized. Y
Upon the exterior of the housing H, pre ferably between its upper and lower ends, is the outwardly extending lug structure or flange 15, having the ears-16, into whichare threaded the screws 17 extending through holes in the upper inwardly extending flange 1,8 of the hollow or bell-shaped base D, cheaply and simply formed of sheet metal and preferably having atits lower end the bead or roll 19, at which it rests upon a table or other support. At 20-the base D is provided with an aperture through which the telephone cord 10 extends from the interior of the cap C to the binding posts of the circuit which supplies the lsoun'dor speechrepresentin-n1 current.
At the upper and large end of the horn Section S it is provided with circumferentially spacedlugsor the circumferentially continuous flange 21, preferably inclined to the vertical, as indicated in 'Fig'. 1. The bell or second section Bj of the horn structure is constructed of sheet material, preferably metal flaring from its small to its large end or molth, where it is provided with the roll or bead 22. At its small end the bell B has the linwardly turned lugs or circumferenbell B into vthe lugs or flange 21 of the sec- A tion S.
A horn comprisin the sections S and B, of the character an structure described, is
simple,of low cost of manufacture, and yet fully effective for amplifying with small, if any, distortion the sound waves produced by the telephone diaphragm T.
Byl the combination of the character described there may be utilized for-the base D sheet'metal.I as distinguished from more substantial cost metal bases, effecting substantial saving in cost, without sacrificing e'ectiveness. This is made possible by utilizing the telephone housing H as a connecting member between the base and the horn structure proper.
As indicated in the drawing, it is preferred that the base D be secured to the under side of the flange or lug structure upon the housing H, though it will be understood that the flange 18 of the base D may be disposed above the flange or lug structure 1F.
What l claim is:
1. An amplifying telephone eomprisin ,f a telephone housing, a diaphragm supported therein, a second housing member, a telephone magnet system secured thereon, a base secured to said housing independently of said second housing member, and a horn separate from said base carried by said housing.
2. An amplifying telephone comprising a telephone housing, a diaphragm therein, a cap adjustable upon said housing, a magnet system secured to said cap and adjustable therewith with respect to said housing and diaphragm, a base secured to said housing independently of said cap, and a horn separate from said base carried by said housing.
3. An amplifying telephone comprising a sheet metal base, a telephone housmg to which said base is secured, a diaphragm in said housing, a second housing member independent of said base, a magnet system secured to said second housing member, and a horn separate from said base carried by said housing.
e. An amplifying telephone comprising a telephone housing, a diaphragm therein, a second housing member, a magnet system secured thereon, a baseindependent of said second housing member secured to said housing intermediate its ends, and a horn independent of said base carried'by said housing.
5. An amplifying telephone comprising a sheet metal base having an inwardly extending flange, a telephone housing secured to said flange, a second housing member independent of said base and flange, a magnet system secured on said second housing member, and a horn independent of said base carried by said housing.
6. An amplifying telephone comprising a telephone housing, an externalflange on said housing, a sheet metal base having an inwardly turned flange secured to said housing flange, a second'housing member independent of said base, a magnet system secured to said second housing member, and a horn independent of said base carried by said housing.
An amplifying telephone comprising a telephone housing, an external. flange on said housing intermediate the ends thereof, a sheet metal base having an inwardly turned flange secured to said housing 'fl-ange, a second housing member independent of said base, a magnet system secured to said second housing member, and a horn independent of said base carried by said housing.
8. An amplifying telephone comprising a telephone housing, lug structure on the exterior of said housing, a separate base secured to said lug structure, and a horn independent of said base carried by said housing.
9. An amplifying telephone comprising a telephone housing, an external flange thereon mtermediate its ends, a base having adjacent its upper end an inwardly turned flange secured to said housing flange, and a horn independent of said base carried by said housing.
10. An amplifying telephone comprisingl a telephone housing, a diaphragm therein` a magnet system therein, a cap carrying said magnet system and disposed on the lower end of said housing, a base secured to said housing above said cap, and a horn independent of said base carried by said housing.
