r1`his invention relates essentially to a tele- The tubular casing 7 is provided with the phone hand set of that type in which the usual talking or transmitting unit l2 and a handle carries the receiver and transmitter diaphragm 13 fixed to the unit. A circular opposite to each other so that it can be conmouth member ll made of hai-il rubber with 5 veniently held to the mouth and the message a circular depression 15 eccen ric with the 55 received by one of the ears of a'person. periphery of' the member is located adjacent An object of the invention is to provide the diaphragm. lVithin the depression sunk a. method of mounting the electro magnets below the top is a series of slots 1(3,conm1uniof the receiving unit in a tubular casing eating with the cavity 1T of the member la formed at one end of the handle. which is substantially elliptic as indicated 60 Another object of the invention is to proin Fig. l. In this device the sound waves vide means whereby the receivinor unit can pass through the slots and strike against the be removed from the casing so lttliat it can elliptic 'inner surface of the mouth piece be inspected and any defects in the connecthereby scattering the sound molecules in thetions readily repaired. cavity over a wide area. The-depression is 65 Another object of the invention is to prolocated at an angle to the diaphragm so that `vide a mouth member at the transmitting the full volume o t the sound waves passing end of the casing whereby the volume of through the slots strike the diaphragm at an sound is intensified by striking against an angle and rebound against the elliptic surelliptic shaped cavity formed in the mouth face giving resonancy. The member 1i is 70 member. clamped to the casing by a flanged ring 1S Another object. of the invention is to prohaving interior threaded portions to engage vide the handle with a rectangular compartthe exterior threads' at the end of the tubular ment suitable for mounting the switches casing. The usual line circuit connections 19 thereon controlling the circuit for the receivare shown leading to the transmitting and 75 ing and transmitting devices. receiving unit as indicated in Fig. l.
The novel features of the invention are The receiving devices include a circular more fully described in the following speciperforated ear member 2O having a rim 2l fication and claims and illustrated in the aewhereby it is clamped fast by means of a companying drawings in which: flanged interior threaded ring Q2 screwed 80 Fig. 1 represents a vertical sect-ion of a' onto the exterior threads at the end of the device embodying this invention. tubular casing. A diaphragm 24 is placed Fig. 2 is a horizontal section along the line on the rim. In the interior of the casing is 2-2 of Fig. l. arranged a supporting annular member or Fig. 3 is a similar section taken along the thimble having outwardly projecting annu- 85 line 3--3 of the same. lar base flange 25 and an inwardly extending Fig. 4 is a vertical sect-ion along the line annular upper flange :26 with a central open* 4 4 of Fig. 1. ing, the flange 25 at the base of the thimble Fig. 5 is an inverted plan vieW of the transis forced against the end of the casing by the mitter. ring Q2 thus clamping the thimble member 90 In the drawings is shown a handle 6 prefto the casing. A pair of bobbins or electro erably made of hard rubber'and having conmagnets 26 are located in the central opentiguous tubular casings 7 and 8 respectively ing ot the thimble and each has a coil of wire located at each end of the handle. In the 27 wound thereon with terminals 2S at times handle is located a rectangular compartment connected to the transmitter. Each bobbin 95 9 closed by a countersunk plate 9 arranged is provided with a soft iron core or pole memat the bottom of the handle. The plate has ber 29 having its upper end bent at right movably mounted thereon push buttons 10 angles as indicated in Fig. l. The pole memand 11 the object of which will be hereinafter ber is secured to the flange 26 by means of described. rivet or bolt' 30 passed through an eye in 1n the pole member and the flange. In the space between the flange and the pole member is arranged a segmental bushing or Washer 3l to give rigidity to the connecting parts A key 32 connecting both poles fastens the bobbin to the poles or cores.
The means for closing the circuit of the transmitter and receiver is controlled by the said push button l() arranged in the bottom of the handle. In the compartment 9 is fixed a frame 33 by means of screws 34 which also secure the plate 9 for closingr the compartment. Spring contact blades 35 are fixed to a block $36 secured in the frame. The blades are actuated by the push button l0 thereby closing the circuit leading to the transmitting and receiving units. Spring contact blades 3T secured to the block 3G controlled by the button ll close a circuit 3S connected to a buzzer at a distant station. The wi re electrical connections between the contact blades, the transmitter and receiver are of the usual kind.
