3 Claims. (Cl. 179-103) The present invention relates in general to hand telephones, but is particularly concerned with the provision of a hand telephone designed especially for use in places where it will be exposed to the weather.
With the foregoing use in mind one object has been to construct a handset which is effectively sealed against the entry of water into its vital parts.
Another object is to provide a rugged and dependable switching spring combination in the handle of the hand telephone.
A still further object is to provide a hand telephone of the foregoing type suitable for use with magnetic telephone units of the type disclosed in my copending application Ser. No. 738,030, filed Aug. 2, 1934.
Other objects and features of the invention not specifically mentioned will be evident from a perusal of the following description and claims.
Reference will now be had to the single sheet of drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a sectional view, in elevation, of a hand telephone embodying the invention and is shown with part of the handle broken away; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view in elevation of that part of the handle not shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view with certain parts broken away; Fig. 4 is a wiring diagram; while Fig. 5 illustrates a. detail. 3 The transmitter and receiver casing portions 2 and 3 and the connecting handle portion l of the set comprises a unitary mass of molded plastic material. The casings are of a substantially cylindrical form, are substantially alike, and are each designed to receive a magnetic telephone unit which is employed optionally as a transmitter or as a receiver.
The handle portion 5 of the set has a passage therethrough' communicating with the respective casing and has an enlarged space therein open at one side of the handle to provide a space for a switching spring combination. The combination employed is supported on a member i which flts'into a ledge 5 surrounding the enlarged opening in the handle 5.
In order to obtain a waterproof and armoured wiring connection with the set an externally threaded nipple ii is included in the casing 2 while the same is being molded. Cooperative with the tube or nipple H is a reducing coupling is having a coil of wire 2% threaded into the smaller end thereof which encases the rubber covered wire identering the casing via thev tube. A soft rubber packing gland 22 surrounds the wire it and occupies the space provided by the is first introduced into the handle and. casings with sufiicient slack in the wiring to enable appropriate connections to be made with the terminals ll of the units 6' and 6 beforethey are inserted in their associated casings 2 and 3, respectively.
The units are positioned in the definite relation to their casings in which they are shown by the unit cover screws 9 and i0 which register with the clearances or notches such as 46 appearing in their casings. The mouthpiece assembly employed comprises a main portion M having a diaphragm protecting portion l5 fitted and cemented therein. The portion M of the mouthpiece assembly, having protruding portions it, is placed on the unit 6' with the por tions 56 in register with depressions in the top side of the unit 6', and is held with the unit in rigid relation to the casing by a flanged ring 3' threaded to the casing 2.
The receiver cap l and its associated unit 6 are held to their associated casing by a ring 8 in the same manner that the transmitter unit and its mouthpiece are held to their casing.
In the construction of the circuit switching spring combination the switching springs 2d and 25 and their associated terminal members 2 5' and 25' are secured to but insulated from the support t by screws 265 and 27 and appropriate insulators. Also included in this assembly is a filter or breather retaining member 23 adjacent the under side of support 5. This member serves to hold a filter or breather $5 in a circular ledge surrounding a hole 28 through support 4%. This filter comprises a petroleum saturated felt disk which enables the equalization of air pressure between opposite sides of the support d, while preventing the passage of water. The covers of the units fiand 6 have similar filters, or breather elements, enabling the equalization of air pressure to be extended to the underside of the diaphragm of these units, as explained in the co-pending application previously referred to. a
An extension of the member 28, cooperative with screws 26 and 2? to clamp the spring assembly to support 4, is provided with a tubular guide member for a contact spring operating shaft 3|. This shaft passes through an inverted cup-like member 32 having a portion thereof passing through a hole in support 4 and within which is included a washer 34 of filter material and a spring retaining washer 35 for filter 34. spring 24 is tensioned to normally hold the member 36 with its tapered portion against the flared opening of the member 32.. It will be seen therefore that the cup-like button 33 overlapping member 32,-the filter washer 34, the flared opening of 32 and the cooperating tapered portion of 3'5 all jointly contribute to the making of a water tight seal between the two sides of support 4 at this point.
As previously stated, the support 4 fits into a ledge 5 surrounding the opening in handle I. A gasket 44, arranged between the ledge 5 and the support 4, is compressed by screws 38 and 39 passing through the ends of 4 and entering threaded inserts in the handle I, as clearly shown -in Fig. 2, making a water tight connection between the support and the handle.
The circuit connections of the set are clearly shown by the wiring diagram of Fig. 4. It will be seen from this diagram that the transmitter and receiver assemblies are permanently connected in multiple and that when button 33 is operated they are bridged across the outgoing line conductors.
The terminals 40 and 4| comprise screws threaded into metal inserts 42 and 43 in the base of the transmitter casing 2.
Having described the invention, what is considered to be new and is desired to be protected by Letters Patent will be set forth in the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A hand telephone set comprising a handle having its ends terminating in casings, transmitter and receiver units mounted in said casings, said casings having notches in the inner periphery thereof cooperative with elements of the transmitter and receiver units to insure their placement in such casings in juxtaposition with respect thereto, a mouth-piece for the transmitter, an ear-piece for the receiver, means for securing said pieces in fixed relation to their respective casings, and means on said respective pieces cooperative with depressions in their associated units to insure their being assembled in juxtaposition with respect to said casings and units.
2. A hand telephone comprising a transmitter casing and a receiver casing joined together by a handle, a cavity in the center of the handle, a supporting plate covering said cavity having a hole therethrough, a filter closing said opening to the free passage of liquids therethrough but permitting the passage of air therethrough as required to maintain air pressure on both sides of said plate substantially equalized, an operable member passing through another hole through said plate, means for also sealing the area surrounding said operating member against the free passage of liquids; an assembly mounted on said plate inside said cavity including, means for holding said filter thereto, a set of contact springs, and a guide member for said operating member; and means for holding said operating member in operative relation to said springs.
3. A hand telephone comprising a unitary molded mass of insulating material comprising two casings joinedby a handle, a transmitter in one casing and a receiver in the other, said handle portion having a fiat surface on one side thereof and a large cavity therein with passages connecting such cavity with the casings, a plurality of threaded inserts molded in the base of the transmitter casing, other such inserts molded in the handle, and an externally threaded tube extending through the bottom of the side wall of such casing and protruding through the external side thereof.
