Be it known that l, LINDLEY W. Moons, a citizen of the Unit d States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful improvements in Dustpans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dust pans and has particular reference to a dust pan having a bottom which may be dropped so as to permit the discharge of dirt therefrom. 7
Another object is to provide a dust pan which will retain the dirt against accidental spilling as is common with ordinary dust pans.
Another object is to produce a dust pan which is cheap to manufacture and there-- fore well within the purchase price of the average user.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved dust pan,
Figure II is a. bottom plan view thereof, and
Figure III is a cross section showing the bottom in a dropped position.
The ordinary dust pan consists of a single piece of metal and is provided with no means for retaining the dirt within the pan with the consequent result that a dust pan is often tipped and the result of considerable effort is lost as the dirt must be again swept into the pan. It ismy intention to provide means for retaining the dirt within the pan and also to provide means whereby the dirt may be readily discharged from the pan, and l have accomplished these objects in a novel manner and by referring to the drawings it will be noted that the numeral 5 designates the bottom of a dust pan which has upturned sides as shown at 6 and 7.
Extensions 8 and 9 formed integral with the sides 5 and 7 serve as guides during the pivotal movement of the bottom 5, as will be later seen. These extensions 8 and 9 are each provided with an arcuate shaped slot 11 within which a pin 12 is adapted to move. lt is understood that there is a pin provided for each slot in the opposite sides. These The bottom 5 has an upturned portion 13 extending between the legs 13 and l l of the The forward extremh tics of ties s are connected by an in clined portion which carries latch plate 1 positioned th rebelow. This latch plate adapted to receive one end of a latch bar mounted upon the under surface of the tom 5 by means of guides 23 and 24:. Li. .ing 26 is confined between the guide 2% and a stop :27 carried by the latch bar A finger piece 28 is formed upon the latch bar in order that the same may be easily reciprocated.
At 29 and 31 l have shown curved spring icinbers which are attached to the bottom ll-shaped member 16. These members permit movement of the bottom relative to the U-shaped member.
The operation of my device is as follows Assuming that the parts are assembled as I 5 u L -shaped name 16.
e leg 19 shown in Figure l, dirt and other trash may be brushed over the inclined portion 19 and onto the bottom 5. Should the dust pan be tilted at too great an angle the dirt will move forv-zard and be received in the pocket beneath the inclined portion 19. N hen it is desired to empty the pan, the finger piece 28 is moved toward the handle 17 with the result that the bottom 5 will be released so that it will drop to the position shown in Figure Ill, after wnich time the dirt collected in the pan may be readily discharged.
it is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim 1. in a dust pan, a base having upturned ill) 2. In a dust pan, a base having upturned side edges, extensions formed on said side edges, a U-shaped frame pivotally secured to said extensions, a handle secured to said 5 U-shaped frame, an inclined portion secured between the extremities of said U-shaped frame, a latch plate positioned on said incline'd frame, a latch slidably positioned beneath said base and adapted to be moved into contact with said latch plate, and spring 10 members for permitting relative movement between said base and said U-shaped frame. In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LIN DLEY \V. MOORE.
