DUSTPAN Filed June 11, 1937 Patented Aug. 29, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a dust pan and more particularly to a dust pan which is provided with mechanically actuated means for placing the same in position by the operator for receiving dust, trash and the like.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a dust pan which is provided with foot actuated means for elevating the rear portion of the dust pan causing the same to assume an angle with respect to the floor which will facilitate the sweeping of the dust or the like onto the pan.
A still further important object of the present invention is to provide a novelly constructed and arranged handle which is adapted to be controlled by the operator in combination with the foot actuated means for facilitating the sweeping of the dust or the like onto the pan.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is relatively easy to operate, and which may be manufactured .at a low cost.
In the accompanying drawing wherein like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dust pan.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view illustrating the manner in which the bail is firmly pivotally mounted in the side portion of the dust pan.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the bail.
Figure 4 is a sideelevational view illustrating the manner in which the tread lever is operated for raising the dust pan to its dust receiving position,
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration there is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference numeral 6 generally designates the dust pan which is provided with upstanding side portion 8 connected together by means of the bottom pan the rear portion of which extends upwardly and over the rear of the side terminating short of the front edge of the bottom.
To the side 8 there is pivotally mounted in centrally disposed apertures therein a substantially U-shaped bail l2 which is twisted at its central portion defining a projection which is received in the socket in the handle [4. It will be observed, that the free ends of the legs of the U-shaped bail are turned inwardly at right angles as at 16 and are received in the apertures I8 in the sides 8. The handle carrying bail l2 as will be observed is pivotally mounted centrally of the sides 8 and at a point, which during the carrying of the dust pan through the medium of the handle l4 permits of the dust pan to assume a substantially parallel position with respect to the floor thereby holding the dust content on the dust pan.
Referring now to Figures 1 .and 3 it will be seen, that there are provided centrally disposed apertures in the rear portion of the side 8 into which there is pivotally received the free end 20 of the tread lever 22. The tread lever 22 is of substantially U-shape having a central U-shaped integral projecting foot portion 24 which is at right angles to the U-shaped portion 26. The said lever if so desired may be constructed of resilient material, to the end that the legs 28 are normally urged inwardly possibly retaining the free end 20 in the apertures in the side 8 of the dust pan.
Referring to Figure 4 it will be seen that the dust pan is normally placed fiat on the floor or other surface the foot portion 24 of the tread lever projecting upwardly from the floor. When it is desired to sweep the dust onto the pan the foot is placed on the loop 24 forcing the same flatly against the floorcausing the rear end of the dust pan to be raised from the floor directing the front'edge of the bottom of the pan into close contact with the floor in which position the pan may be held firmly by standing on the loop facilitating the sweeping of the dust or the like onto the pan. After the dust has been swept on to the pan, the foot is removed from the tread lever causing the pan to assume its normal parallel position and through the medium of the handle M the pan may be transferred to any position, for the removal of the dust therefrom or for the application or receiving of other dust without fear of the dust or the like dropping from the pan.
While there is shown for the purpose of illustration a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that it is capable of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and it is intended therefore, that only such limitations shall be imposed thereon, as are indicated in the prior art, or in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A dust pan of the class described having upstanding side portions, a substantially U-shaped tread lever having its free ends bent inwardly at right angles to the legs thereof and being pivotally connected in the sides centrally and adjacent the rear portions thereof, the bight portion of said U-shaped tread lever being bent at its central portion thereof outwardly substantially at a right angle to the legs into a substan-
