Be it known that 1, DAVID MoEnLANn, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland and the Isle of Man, and a resident of 51 Bedlay Street, Springburn, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Pumps for Inflating Pneumatic Tires and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in and relating to pumps for inflating pneumatic tires and the like and particularly relates to that type of pump in which a piston is reciprocated within a cylinder by means of levers, rods and links actuated by the foot of the operator.
According to this invention the pump consists of two pistons which operate in the same cylinder and are actuated si1nu1- taneously by suitable. mechanism operated by the foot of the operator.
The construction and arrangement of the parts of the pump is such that when it is not in use it may be collapsed so as to occupy as little space as possible.
In order that others skilled in the art to which this invention relates may properly understand the same I have hereunto appended two sheets of explanatory drawings in which Figures 1 and 2 are respectively an elevation and a plan view of a pump as constructed according to this invention While Figures 3 and 4t are end views.
In Figures 1 and 3 the lever mechanism when in the extended position is indicated. by dotted lines.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the cylinder and the pistons of said pump.
Referring to these drawings,
in, carrying the improvements oil. this invention into ett'ect or -practice an open ended cylinder 1 is formed or provided with a bracket 2 at each end. Two pistons 2121 located in the cylinder 1 have their piston rods 2222 which protrude from the ends of the cylinder 1, fitted with crossheads' other pair of rods 6 are similarly secured to the crosshead 4 at the end of the other piston rod 21. and these rods 6 slide through holes in the bracket 2 at the other endoithe cylinder. A guide rod '7 preferably of polygonal shape in cross section is secured on each side of the cylinder 1 between the brackets 2. A pair oi slidable crossheads 8 and 9 are adapted to slide on each rod'l. The crossheads 8 are secured to the rods 6 a while the crossheads 9 are secured to the rods 5. The rodsoand 6 are so arranged that the one clearsthe other. Y
The polygonal shape of the rods Tprevents the crossheads 8 and 9 fromturning or partially rotating round the rods.
The foot operated lever 10 consists of a double lever, the limbs of which are mounted on a hinge pin or cross rod 11 carried by lugs 12 fitted to or formed in one with one of the brackets 2. l
At a suitable position on this foot lever 10 the'upper ends of two pairs of links and 1 1 are pivoted. The lower ends ofthe links 13 are pivoted to the crossheads 8 while the lower ends of the links let are pivoted to the crossheads 9.
The lever 10 would be provided with a suitably constructed tread bar or surface 15. The cylinder 1 would be provided with the usual pressure gauge and tire connection connected to the outlet branch. 16. The pistons 2121 are of that type which consist of two collars 28 mounted on the piston rods 22 and having between said. collars leather washers 2 1 of cup form. When the pistons 2121 are on the in stroke compressing the air' between them the pressure of the air expands the edges of the cup leathers 24: so that the air cannot pass the pistons but is forced through the central dischau'ge outlet 16 which is preferably pro vided with a spring controlled non-return ball valve of well known construction (not shown). hen the pistons 2121 are on the out stroke, the suction action in the" cylinder 1 betweenthe pistons ill-21 draws the air by the pistons from the open ends of the cylinder 1.
A spring 17 is mounted on the cross rod 11 so as to return the levers and pistons 2121 after the foot lever 10 has been depressed to deliver the air.
A catch lever 18 mounted on a bracket 19 fitted to one of the end brackets 2 is adapted to engage the foot lever 10 so as to hold same downwards when the pump is not in use.
Stops are fitted on the rods 7 to limit the travel of the crossheads 8 and 9.
I claim.
1. In a pump for inflating pneumatic tires and the like a cylinder; piston rods tires and the like, a cylinder; a foot operated lever connected by means of links to slidable crossheads and adapted to reciprocate towards and from each other a pair of pistons arranged in said cylinder substantially'as herein set forth.
3. A pump comprising an open ended cylinder barrel; a pair of pistons mounted therein; a piston rod fitted to each piston and protruding one from each end of said barrel; a crosshead at the extremity of each protruding piston rod; members adapted to reciprocate in a direction parallel with theaxis of said barrel and located on each side of said barrel; guiding means for said members; means for reciprocating said members; and means connecting said members with said crossheads so that the reciprocating movement of said members is imparted to said crossheadsf 4. A pump comprising an open ended cylinder barrel; two pistons adapted to reciprocate to and from each other in said cylinder barrel; a piston rod fitted to each piston and protruding one from each end of said barrel; a crosshead at the extremity of each protruding piston rod; guide rods located one on each side of said barrel; crossheads slidably mounted on each guide rod; and connecting rods .for associating respectively said first-mentioned and second-mentioned crossheads; and means for reciprocating said crossheads.
5. A pump for inflating pneumatictires and the like comprising a pump frame; an open ended cylinder barrel supported thereby; a pair of pistons adapted to reciprocate to and from each other in said barrel; a piston rod fitted to each piston and protruding one from each end of said barrel; a crosshead at the extremities of each protruding piston rod; guide rods located one 011 each side of said barrel; crossheads slidably mounted on each guide rod; con- 'necting rods extending between the firstmentioned and second-mentioned cross heads; a foot operated treadle lever pivoted on said pump frame; and a pair of links connecting said treadle lever with the said slidable crossheads.
