is necessary to bring the rolls gradually but positively together in order to permit the metal to spin or roll into the forms desired and at the same time it is desirable to permit the rolls to be quickly separated after their work is performed to facilitate the opera-- tion of the machine.
It is the object of this invention to pro-- vide an improved rolling machine with improved control means for that purpose.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of this invention by the mechanism described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A machine which is'a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:

The movable roll 14 is carried on shaft 15 which is journaled on slide 16 which travels in waysl'? to and from the main roll. This shaft is driven by the train of gears 18, 19, 20 and 21 from the driving gear 125011 the main roll shaft to the driven gear 15 on the movable roll shaft 15. Gear 21 of the train is carried on the rocker 22 which is pivoted coaxially with the gear 20 so that it rocks in-mesh with the gear 20 and follows the movementsofthe gear 15 to drive the same when it is'moved to and from its'worlc ing position; 7 I I I The rocker 22 is secured by any suitabie means to the slide so that it can oscillate therewith, or its relation may be malntained in any way to insure the meshing of the gear 21 with the gear 15.

The rock shaft is actuated from the cross head 26 which is connected by a pitinan 27 This cross head is reciprocated other .motor fluid-maybe provided, is introduced to the engine cylinder through any throttle means indicated diagran'nnatically by the connection 10. The engine movements are controlled by a dash pot complieing the piston plunger 31 reciprocated in the cylinder 32. This dash pot is supplied with oil from a tank- 33, the oil being admitted past the inwardly opening spring seated self-closing inlet valve 34- maintained in position against the valve seat 36by a spring 35. lhe oil reservoir 33 has an auxiliary chamber 37 extending down by the side of the dash pot control cylinder 32.
A series of discharge ports 38 connect the cylinder of the dash pot at intervals for a considerable portion of its length to the auxiliary chamber. These ports are controlled by the separatel adjustable needle valves 39 carried in the wall 37 of the auxiliary reservoir extension 3?. These parts are at different distances from the end of the cylinder and are covered and uncovered successively by the plunger piston.
From this description it will be seen that when the machine is thrown into operation, the rolls will be suitably driven and they are, of course, preferably provided with compensating driving means.
The rim to be rolled is inserted in place and the rolls are in action and air is admitted to the cylinder 29. This forces through its cross head and rock shaft connections the movable roll shaft and its roll into work and the rate of its advance is controlled by the dischargeof oil in the dash pot past the series of needle valves into the oil reservoir. The resistance to this movement gradually increases as the plunger passes the ports 38 in the side of the cylinder until its final movement which is very slow owing to the slow rate at which the oil passes the last needle valve into the reservoir. This insures the gradual event movement of the roll to its work and permits and insures the spinning of the parts effectively. -When the engine is reversed or released, its weight when it is returned by gravity, permits it to drop quickly to the starting position, the large inlet valve 3% is raised from its seat 35 and the oil rushes in from the reservoir to fill the dash pot cylinder ready for the next operation.
I have shown this improved means in connection with a rolling machine but it can be applied to control the movements of rolls generally although it is specially adapted for the particular machine and work here shown in its special connections and relations.
I desire to claim the invention specifically as shown, and also broadly as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a rolling machine, the combination of a frame, a roll upon a fixed shaft, a movable roll upon a shaft supported in a slide, a driving means and a gear train between the said rolls for driving the same in unison, a rock shaft with rock arms and connections for actuating the said slide, an engine with cross head and link connections therefrom to actuate the said rock shaft, a dash pot comprising a plunger secured to the said cross head and a cylinder with an oil reservoir therefor having an auxiliary extension to one side of the said cylinder, a series of exhaust ports in the dash pot cylinder leading to the oil reservoir and adjustable valves for controlling the said ports to regulate the same, and a spring seated yielding intake valve between the oil reservoir and the dash pot cylinder to permit the quick return of the machine and the filling of the said dash pot cylinder with oil, coacting as specified.
In a rolling machine, the combination of a frame, a roll upon a fixed shaft, a movable roll upon a shaft supported in a slide, a driving means and a gear train between the said rolls for driving the same in unison, a rock shaft with rock arms and connections for actuating the said slide, an engine with cross head and link connections therefrom to actuate the said rock shaft, a dash pot comprising a plunger secured to the said cross head and a cylinder with an oil reservoir therefor having an auxiliary extension to one side of the said cylinder, a series of exhaust ports in the dash pot cylinder leading to the oil reservoir, and a spring seated yielding intake valve'between the oil reservoir and the dash pot cylinder to permit the quick return of the machine and the filling of the said dash pot cylinder with oil, coaeting as specified.
3. in a rolling machine, the con'ibination of a frame, a roll upon a fixed shaft, a movable roll upon a shaft supported in a slide, a driving means and a gear train between the said rolls for driving the same in unison, a rock shaft with rock arms and connections for actuating the said slide, an engine with cross head and connections therefrom to actuate the said rock shaft, a dash pot comprising a plunger secured to the said cross head and a cylinder with an oil reservoir therefor having an auxiliary extension to one side of the said cylinder, a series of exhaust ports in the dash pot cylinder loading to the oil reservoir and adjustable valves for controlling; the said ports to regulate the same, and an intake valve between the oil reservoir and the dash pot cylinder to pcrinit the quick return. of the machine and the filling of the said dash potcylindcr with oil, coacting as specified.

5. In a rolling machine, the combination with a supporting frame, of a roll upon a fixed shaft, a movable roll, an engine con nected to control the said movable roll, a dash pot connected to the said engine comprising a plunger and a cylinder with an oil reservoir having an auxiliary extension to one side of the said cylinder, a series of exhaust ports with adjustable valves leading from the said dash pot cylinder to the said reservoir, and a valved opening from the said reservoir to the cylinder to permit the quick return and fill the dash pot cylinder with oil.
6. In a rolling machine the combinationwith a sumaorting frame, of a. roll upon a fixed shaft, a movable roll, an engine connected to control the said movable roll, a dash pot connected to the said engine comprising a plunger and a cylinder with an oil reservoir having an auxiliary extension to one side of the said cylinder, a series of haust ports leading from the said dash pot cylinder tothe said reservoir and a valved opening from the saidreservoir to the cylinder to permit the quick return and fill the dash pot cylinder with oil.
