COWABDIIL. OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA eovnmvon Application filed January 20, 1928. Serial No. $8,261.
My invention relates to oil relay governors.
It is the object of my invention to provide a governor in which a fluid pressure system operated by the engine which is being governed serves to shift the cam shaft on the engine which controls the amount of fuel supplied to the engine, and to further provide a governor to control the extent of application of such fluid pressure means to maintain a given engine-speed, as desired.
In particular, it is the object of my invention to provide a manual setting control for positioning the governor with respect to the 5 fluid pressure system which it controls in order to control the stopping and running of the engine.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the governor mechanism and the engine to which.
it is attached.
' Figure 2 is an enlarged section through the governing mechanism, showing the parts in stopped position.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the parts in intermediate position as the governor is proceeding to correct the engine speed as the result of a full load being applied before the camshaft moves.
F igure 4 is a similar view showing the parts in position to run.
It will be understood that my invention is applicable either to a separate fluid pressure supply to control the system or it is appli- 35 cable to the circulation system for lubrication of an engine.
I preferably desire to employ my invention in connection with an injected fuel type of .oil engine.
This particular invention is of that type in which the camshaft may be moved bodily bya system of levers for adjusting it from stopping to running position, and .by which simultaneously the position of the governor arms is modified with respect to the camshaft.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is an engine connected by pipes 2 and 3 to alubrication pump 4* driven by the engine by the 0 shaft 5. This pump is connected by the pipe casing this lever 25 serves 6 to a fluid pressure cylinder 7. The walls of this cylinder are formed by a tubular bearmg sleeve 8, which supports the camshaft 9 as a piston. The-sleeve 8 is carried within a casing cylinder 10, which is part of a general enlarged casing 11. Thecamshaft 9 has a centrally arranged passageway 12 opening through the end of the camshaft communicating with the cylinder 7 This passageway 12 proceeds an appreciable distance through- 0 out the length of the camshaft and discharges laterallylthrough the passageway 13 into the The discharge through the passageway 13 of fluid pressure accumulated within the cyle5 inder 7 is controlled by a sliding sleeve 14 carried on the camshaft. This sleeve is reciprocated on the camshaft by the arms 15, which are apart of the governor construction, which consists of the arms 15 and the arms 16 connected' by the link 17 carrying the weights 18 and restrained in their outward movement by the cross springs 19, which are connected to the respective groups of arms. The arms. 16 are mounted upon a collar 20, which is prevented from moving in one direction by the stud 21 on the camshaft 9.
Engaging this collar 20 is a yoke on the lever 22. This lever is pivoted at 23, isactuated by a pitman 24, which in turn is actuated by the lever 25. The movement of to shift the governor and the camshaft axially. The positioning of the lever at any given position fixes the relative position of the governor with respect 5 to the cylinder 7 The collar 20 is mounted by a spline 26 upon the camshaft so that the governor will rotate with the camshaft. The camshaft is surrounded by a helical spring 27 engaged on at either end by a ball bearing 28. One of these ball bearings engages the casing 11 and the other the stop 29 on the camshaft. The camshaft carries the usual cam 30, of which there may be any number, operating the roller 31 of the fuel injection mechanism 32. The casing is provided with a return pipe 33, which returns-the fluid from the casing discharged from the fluid pressure cylinder to the reservoir 34, whence it passes by the pipe 35back to the pump 4. The camshaft 9 is rotated by the gears 36 and 37 or by any other suitable mechanism. Y The camshaft is provided with a supplementary discharge passageway 38, which is normally concealed and closed by the sleeve 8, but which is open when the engine achieves excessive speed and thereby the pump builds u excessive pressure so that it forces the'cams aft to an unusual position to the right hand, thus opening up the passageway 38 immediately discharging the fluid pressure and causing the stopping of the engine by the camsha t shifting under the action of the spring to its extreme lefthand position. This condition will arise only when the governor has become inoperative.
Method of operation When the handle 25 is moved to running osition the collar 20 is moved to the right hand so that the valve sleeve 14 may more readily, upon a given speed, control and cover the port 13, thus causing the fluid pres sure from the pump to force the camshaft longitudinally against the spring 27, bringing the cams 30 into a position to supply adequate fuel to the engine for the load it is desired the engine shall carry.
If the handle is brought to the stop position then the sleeve 20is moved to the left hand and by so doing the valve sleeve 14 is moved to a position where it cannot cover the port 13 so that the fluid. pressure will discharge therethrough freely, and the engine will come to a stop as the camshaft will take a position where inadequate fuel will be sup plied by. the cam mechanism operating throu h the oil injection mechanism to support t e engine operation. In the event that the governor does not work the safety outlet 38 will permit the oilin the cylinder 8 to escape withoutthe necessity of the passage 13 being uncovered. This is due tothe fact that 1 pressure is built up in'the cylinder 8, which forces the camshaft to its extreme righthand position.
The hole 38 is alsoused in starting by moving the camshaft to the right by the lever 25. This permits immediate exhausting of fluid during starting. Under such condition of starting the collar 20 is moved to the extreme right engaging the collar. 21, thereby manually moving the camshaft.
I desire to comprehend within my inven tion such modifications as may be clearly embraced within my claims and the scope of my invention. I I
