VYVYAN E. DONNER, O'F NEW YORK, N.
r`'SIGN FOR ADVERTISING AAND OTHER DISPLAY.
, Application tiled A11-gust 1, `1924. Vgenial No. 729,434,
To all /wlwm -z't may concern.: y 1
.Be it known that l, VYvraN E.` DoNNnn, a citizen of the United 'States or' America, residing `at borough of yManhattan, city, county, and .State of New York, have invented certain new .and useful Improve` ment in `Signs for Advertising and Other Display, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention re-lates to signsjfor advertising, display, publicity., promotion `and .similar purposes.
Pursuant to the preferred forms olf myv invention, the sign comprises a. stationary or movable pictorial representation, alone or `accompanied by lettering or other descriptive matt-er, for yadvertising or .displaying merchandise, goods, theatrical or other shows and the like. Such pictorial representations are formed of multiple, separable parts, superimposed or fitted in or otherwise `assembled or joined 'to' one another to form the stationary or movable pictorial representations. The parts are assembled by. the` use yot suitable securing elements,
`ling, painting with brushes, -or by airbrushl` or other.,methods.`
llhe separabilit-y .of the parts isadvantageous in the manufacture oit' the signs I in quantity, .and in the shipment tot" the parts to 'the locations of' display, and for disassembly V.for removal -to other locations.v
Further features and yobjects of my invention will be more fully understood frein the following detail ,description .and the accompanying drawings, .in whichl, l is a-r-ontelevation of a sign showing -diagrammatfically one form ot my .in vention and an advertisement of` any .desirable brand of goods, such `as stockings.;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line VQL-2 of Fig. l; i
The effects of relie'tl or inta-glio yare F 3 is a top perspective view of a portion oft the sign shown in Fig. 1,0n an enlarged scale;
Fig. 4C is a top perspective 'view of another `port-ion of the sign shownk in Fig. l, onthe same enlarged scale as Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 `is a detail perspective view ot certain individual separated partsot the sign shown in Fig. 1, on the same enlarged scale as Figs. 3 and i; vand Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view `similar to Fig. f5, but showing a modiiication.
Referring to the embodiment of my ini vention shown in Fig. l, `the sign is typical in vadveii'tis'ement of any `selected make of stockings, as representative oi `a. brand of goods, and it will be understood that the character of pictorial represention and descriptive matter shown in Fig. l is applicable for similar and other types of goods, merchandise, commodities, theatrical and other shows and other things of value.
Referring to the drawings, the particular pictorial representation comprises the background member, 10, which may be a board integral torits full length yand width,l or f of,sectionalparts,` or a wall or other form oi? support. Upon the background l0, is
built up the` desired representation ofthe individual parts assembled in accordance with my invention. y
In the particular pictorial matter ofthe sign illustrated in the drawings, a. flight ofl steps is formed oft' a part or groups of parts, 11, having a thickness, see Fig. 2, applin cable to show the desired relief.A Thepictorial representation shown in Fig. l.,- tur-v ther comprises the represen-tation Y12,l of a maiden wearing the advertised merchandise,
`and ypreferably in a posture featuring the advertised merchandise.
In .this instance, .thefeature of a stocking 1s emphasized b y `the showing of one leg, 14, covered by a stocking, and the slipper, 1.5., `castaway in the flightof the maiden downthe steps, ll. In the particular representation of the .sign shown in Fig. l, thename Annabelle stockings, an arbitrary brand, has been "assumed, :tor which lpurpose the lettering, 16, `appears as `a` legend on the sign, disposed at Yany sui-table location such as at the top of 'the sign. c
Such lettering, 16, may be for-med of blocked individual letters, integral with ror applied to av suitable base, 17 secured yto the background base, 10. v
lseparated from the pannier part, 24, to
The representation, 18, of a` moon, colored blue or green or otherwise as desired, adds a. touch of ornamentation to the posture of the maiden, 12.
The part 12, in representation of the maiden is shown formed of separable parts, superimposed or fitted within one another and of varying thicknesses to emphasize the desired relief or intaglio effects. Thus, the part, -19, representing the face and the neck of the maiden, 12, see Fig. 3, is of a selected thickness to be set in relief relative to the face of the background base, 10. The part 2O represents the wig of the maiden 12', which is of a proper or selected thickness and as illustrated may be fitted at its marginal line 20a of a suitable curved contour to a similarly curved marginal line of the face part 19. The wig part 20, may be of greater thickness than the face part 19, as
illustrated, whether fitted or superimposed, or the parts 19, 20 may be of substantially the same thickness.
In a like manner, the part, 21, representing the waist of the maiden 12, is selected of a. propervthickness and fitted at its intersecting line 22 with the neck portion of the part, 19. The part, 23, in representation of the left arin is of a different thickness from that of the waist part, 21, and of the fac-e and neck part, 19.
In the representation, the maiden, 12, is shown holding a pannier, constituted of an individual part, 24, separable from the remaining parts and is selected in thickness 'to effect the desired presentation of being held'by the hand part, 25, representing the left hand, for which purpose the hand part, 25, is cut away at its rear face, as indicated at 26, to receive'the scarf part, 24. It will be also noted that the scarf part, 24, is fitted at its line of contour, indicated at 28 to and within the lower portion, 2S), of the arm part, 23. n l
In a like manner, the remainder of the ligure is superimposed or fitted in, or both, relative to the adjacent parts. The skirt part, 30, see Figs. 34 and 4, is selected of a proper thickness and its lower margin, 31, is fitted to the lining part, 32,v of a reduced thickness; the leg part, 14, is shown of a greater thickness than the lining part,
32, but of less thickness than the skirt part 30, to attain the relief represented in the illustration. It will be noted that the lining part, 31, is fitted at its marginal line, 34, to the leg part, 14, and that the'skirt part 3() is fitted at its front portion 35, to the leg part, 14.
In Fig. 5, the arm part, 23, is shown illustrate its hand portion, 25, cut away at 26'to receive within its cut away portion 26 the portion, 27 of the pannier part, 24, similarly as shown in Fig. 3.
To attain substantially the samerelief and intaglio effects, such parts may be assembled as is indicated in Fig.- 6, namely the arm part, 23, to have its hand part, 36, of a uniform thickness as indicated at 37 andthe pannier part, 24, of a uniform but less thickness and cut out as indicated at 38 to receive the arm portion 36 of a greater thickness as indicated at 37, to thereby derive the desired visual effect attained by the-alternative arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 5. It will ybe understoody `that the background 10 may be colored appropriately of one or more colors, and may be built of separately colored sections as desired. The individual sections of the background 1() may be colored of a single solid color or a plurality of different solid colors.
From the above, it 'will be perceived that the partsof the figure or other pictorial representation applied to the background, are formed of individual parts, superimposed or fitted or otherwise compositely assembled, each part being colored in whole or in portions of solid color. The color scheme of the sign as a whole is preferably selected to enhance the desired relief or intagliol effect, and to obtain prominence of the representation of the goods or merchandise, or of an incident of a theatrical o r other show, or the like, featured by the sign.
For the purposeof manufacture in quantities, the parts'of the pictorial representation, descriptive matter and adjunct parts,
may be colored by dipping each partin Whole or in portions in the coloring. The coloring may be applied by brush, or by spraying or by' a so-called air brush, or by stencilling or other suitable methods.
The background may be made of wood, or of sheet or other forms of metal and the like. The parts of the pictorial, descriptive and adjunct representations formed of wood may be shaped by jig-saws,^or rotary saws and by other suitable methods. vThe parts may be formed of canvas,` cardboard or other paper stock or of moldable cornposition or other suitable material.
Y' The parts may be assembled atlthe location of display to form the sign by means of nails, screws, wooden or metal pins,
rivets, or by spot-welding, or by application of glue or the like, determined by the nature of4 the materials of the the desired permanence of instal ation.
The separability of the parts affords simplicity of manufacture and facilitates the shipment of the-partsfto the locations of assemby. The parts may ybe sectioned to attain standard sizes when bundledy together for shipment or transportation.
The assembly of the parts may be carried out by the use of diagrams to indicate arts and the respective positions of the parts on the composite sign.
The invention is also applicable for signs having one or more parts movable relative to other parts or to the background of the sign. i
IVhereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof it Will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
