R. MATHER FINGER NAIL FILE Filed April 18, 1922 INVENTUR RAYDIUNDNATHE R Patented Apr. 7, 1925.
UNITED STATES ICE.
RAYMOND MATHER, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
FINGER-NAIL FILE.
Application filed April 18,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that RAYMOND MA'rrrER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, has
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger-Nail Files, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in 1 nail files and one of its leading objects is to provide a nail file with file teeth out facing in opposite directions so that an abrasive action will be obtained on both movements of the nail file against the nail tobe trimmed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a nail file with a finger-nail cleaning prong formed thereon and normally protected by a guide adapted to limit the p-rojection of the point or prong under the nail. lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts clearly described in the 13 following specifications, and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which: I a
Fig. 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is an edge view.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal, detail, sectional view showing the opposite facing file teeth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates the body of a steel finger-nail file which is formed on one end with a pointed top B and on the other end with a rounded head C. Across each face into the body A, the file teeth D and E are formed, said file teethbeingvarranged in right and left groups respectively and facing in opposite directions so as to produce an abrasive action against the nail on both reeiprocations of the file. The groups I) and E are arranged so as to occupy substantially one-half of the body of the file, starting from amedian transverse'line 1. Parallel groups may be arranged along a common, median, longitudinal line instead, so that one side of the file can be used. for an abrasive action in one direction and the other side can be used for an abrasive action in the other direction.
On the head C a tongue or prong F isstamped so as to provide a laterally yieldable, nail engaging point F which is slightly 1922. Serial no. 555,476.
spaced from the arched frame or guide G surrounding said prong F to normally protect the point F against penetration of the clothing or the like. When the guide G is placed over the finger nail and a slight pressure is applied against the guide it will be deflected so as to permit of the insertion of the point F under the finger nail when the finger nail may be cleaned by swinging the point F backward and forward under the finger nail.
The tension exerted by the guide Gr, tends to limit the penetration ofthe point F under the finger nail and permits of an easy cleaning movement.
no side of the file is provided with a recess H to give the user a firmer grip on the nail file.-
I- Iaving described my invention, I claim:
1. A-manieure file consisting of a metal body having file teeth formed thereon, a body having file teeth formed on each side thereof, the teeth on each side being arranged in two groups, the teeth of each group being inclined in a common direction and the direction of inclination of one group being opposite to the direction of the inclination of the other group, oneend of the body being formed with a C shaped opening providing a relatively narrow and. pointed finger nall cleaning tongue, the
edges of the tongue being spaced a 'considerable distance from the opposing edge of the C shaped opening to provide a clearancefor the finger nail, one end of the body 7 being pointed.
2. A finger nail finishing and cleaning file consisting of a metal body having finger nail filing teeth onat least one side thereof, the teeth being arranged in two groups on opposite sides of a. transverse line, the teeth of each group having straight and beveled sides and the beveled sides of one group lie-- ing disposed in planes angular to the beveled sides of the other group, whereby a file cutting action will heobtained by movement ofone group of teeth over a finger nail in one direction and movement ofthe other group of teeth in the opposite direction, and a cleaning tongue formed on one end of the'body and provided with a guard around the same. I
