The ribbon-vibrator is connected to shift with the platen to each of its three abnormal case-shift positions, and to be vibrated to cover and uncover the printing point at the type strokes at each position of the platen.
The invention is not limited to the use of Arabic or other alphabet. Certain features may be used for other purposes, and the shifting mechanism is capable of modilication for such purposes.

Type-keys 10 depress levers 11 having pins 12 to engage slots 13 formed in bellcranks 14, toV swing type-bars 15 upwardly Vand rearwardly against a platen 16. rlhe type-bars 15 are pivoted at 17 in an arc below the printing point, the arc being about in a vertical plane, as usual, and have slots 18 engaged by pins 19 in the bell-cranks 14. Upon the type-bars may be carried blocks 20, each having four types 21, 22, 23, 24, of which the lowermost one 21 prints when the platen isin normal position, any of the others being brought into use by appropriately shifting the platen up.
The invention is in the nature of an im-V provement on the standard Underwood typewriting machine, and makes provision for room for the additional types on the type-bars by raising and bringing forward the usual margin-gage rod 25 and front rail 26 at the front of the machine, these being supported upon upward and forward extensions 27 provided upon the front part of the usual framework 28 and carryingy the usual front scale 29. rlhe usual roll 30 runs upon the fro-nt rail 26, this roll being mounted in the front bar 31 of the platen carriage 32, which front bar clears the lengthened type-bars because itis elevated above the remainder of the carriage upon upward and forward extensions 33 provided at the front of said carriage and cast integral therewith; said bar 31 being, however, below the line of vision, so that the typing is visible as it is being written. Thus by simple changes and without objectionable cost the typing capacity of the Underwood machine is doubled, while the appearance of the machine is preserved. y
The usual platen 16 is directly journaled upon a platen frame 34, shiftable upward by means of a swinging shift-rail 35, upon which runs a roll 36 pivoted to bracket 37 depending from the rods 38, 38a forming part of the shift-frame 34, the latter having substantially the usual construction. rlhe shift-frame 34 has at its ends gudgeons 39, which are engaged by arms 4() extending forward from ay rock-shaft 41 pivoted in ears 42 formed upon the main carriage 32, substantially as usual in the Underwood machine. The shift-frame is also guided in its up-and-down movement by a pair of links 43, which are pivoted at 44 to the carriage and at 382L to the shift-frame.
The platen occupies its lowermost position at Figure 1, and is shiftable upwardly thrice the distance usual in 'the Underwood machine. To effect this movement without causing the platen to swing unduly out of a vertical path, the relationship of the pivot points 41 and 39 is changed from the standard construction, by elevating the point 41, so that said points 39 and 41 will be about on a level with each other when the platen has moved half way through its extreme upward throw. For similar reasons the pivot points 38a and 44 have a similar relation. The platen is rotated little or none at the case-shifting operations, and the front or printing line of the platen is caused to travel in an arc which nearly coincides with a vertical line, so that the printing ei'hciency of the types is not impaired, and no great deviation of the types from a straight row on the type-block is necessary; the type-faces on the block lying in approximately a single lane.

rlhe ribbon-winding mechanism is not shown, but it may be substantially the same as in any Underwood machine, or of any usual or standard construction. At Figure 4 is shown diagrammatically the keyboard of the machine, each alphabet key 10 having only one character 105 thereon. These characters for the most part represent medial letters, and are typed when the platen is in its lowermost or normal position. Any ot the other three Jforms on any type may be brought into use by first depressing the appropriate shift-key 4:8, 5T or 77, so that only a single alphabet cal character needs to appear on each of the alphabet keys; this beingl an important advantage over previous keyboards, in which eich key bore two alphabetical characters, tending to confuse and retard the operation.
