JACOB FELBEL, NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO REMINGTON TYPEWRITER COMPANY,'OF-ILION, NEW YORK,-A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J line 6, 1916; Divided and this application filed March 2,
1916; Serial No. 81,646.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB Fruit-11., citi zen of. the- United States, and resident of Kathe borouglrof Manhattan. city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-"rrtmg Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
-My present invention relates to universal bar mechanisms for typewriting'machines and its main object is to provide new and improved mechanism of the character spec fied.
I To the above and other ends my present invention consists in the features of construction', combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The present application is a division'of my .prior application, Serial X0. 58,821, filed October 30, 1915.
. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is. a' vertical transverse sectionalview of a typewrit'ing machine embodying my invention", parts beingomitted. F ig. 2 is.a fragmentary' perspective view showing the universal bar mechanism and associate parts. Fig.3 is a fragmentary plan v ew of the universal bar mechanism. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modification.v
The machinelto which my invention is shown applied generally resembles the -"Monarch typewriting machine bat differing "infdeta-ils therefrom, and'comprises a mainj frame which is composed of a base 1, posts 2 and a topplate 3, above which is mounted a s lidable platen 4 that is drawn leftwardbyaspring drum mechanism of ordinary "movement being controlled by escapement devices, which comprise a toothed escape-l ment wheel ,5. Cooperative with the escape I ment wheel areescapement dogs 6 and 7 construction (not shown); the leftward mounted at the top of, a carrier or rocker 8. The'dogs are or may be of the usual Mon; arch construction but in this instance they are reversed from the ordinary'arrange' Y ment, that is, the rear dog 6 is the stepping or loose dog and the forward dog 7 the fixed 'dog. The carrier 8 is rocked or swung towardthe rear and then forward again to produce step-by-step feed movements of the carriage by' universal bar mechanism of novel construction scribed.
Cooperative with the front face of the platen 1 are a circularly arranged series of type bars 9, each typebar having fixed at its free -end a block provided with two types, the outer type 10 being the lower case type to be hereinafter deand the inner type 11 being the upper case type. The type bars may be pivoted on a common pivot wire 12'which is mounted on a shiftable type bar segment or element 13 in any well known or desirable manner. The type bars fit in and are partly guided by converging slots in the segment. Each type bar is connected by a link 14 to an upright sub-lever 15 which is pivoted on a key lever 16, said sub-lever being-slotted near its lower end to cooperate with a fixed abutment (not shown), butas usual in the Monarch machine. Near their outer end portions the type bars are normally supported by a curved rest 19 which as in the Monarch machine is mounted to shift with the type bar segment 13 during case shiftmg operations. The connections between said'rest and the segment are however notherein illustrated. At its opposite ends 'or sides said type bar segment is provided with grooved track portions 20 which receive anti-friction balls 21 that are controlled byseparators 22,. said balls also cooperating .with oppositely. grooved track ways 23 that are mounted on stationary posts 24 rising from the base 1. For limiting up and down movements of the segment along the station-- ary supports or posts, stop devices .are
provided comprising at' each side an upper stop 25 and a lower stop 26 both on the segment itselfg. Cooperating stop. devices .27 and 28 are adjustably secured in pairs to the rear faces of the posts 24:. The ball bearing, mounting of the' segment and the:
' pivotally with pins 32 that extend latera" outward from the rear, free ends of crank arms33. The crank arms havefhubs 34 that fit over a key controlled rock shaft 35 and are fixed to' said rock shaft near its ends,
said rock shaft having stationary bearings. Outside each crank' arn'rthere is fixed to said rock shaft a forwardly extending crank arm .36. Fitting loosely' over the rock shaft inside each crank arm 36 andextendstructed and operated as set-forth in my.
original application aforesaid. A depressionof either shift'key lever operates on the underlying roll 39 to swing down the arms 37 and 36,'rocking the shaft 35 and swinging the crank arm 33 upward. The
upward movement of the crank arms-33 is transmitted through the arms 30 to the type bar. sup port comprising the segment 13, which support is thereby shifted or raised to an extent limited by the engagement of "the stops 26 with their associated stops 28.
The result of this shifting movement is to render the upper case types '11 operative when the type bars are actuated, the types 10 having been shifted upward so that they willnot strike against the platen. lVhen the actuated shift key is released the type bar segment and connected'parts are re stored to normal position where the stops 25 engage with their associated stops 27. Counterbalancing springs and shift locking devicesas disclosed in my aforesaid original application are preferably provided.
The universal bar. according to my pres ent invention, is mounted to reciprocate on a frame or support which in turn ismovably mounted on the frame o'f-the machine or a stationary part thereof so that saiduniversal bar support is entirely separate froin and independent of the case shifting element or type bar support 13. In the present instance the universal bar support is adapt ed to beshifted at times automatically upon actuation of rather one of the shift keys 40, and means are also )1 ';-\'l(l(l for disconnecting the universal. bar and its support so that the case shifting: keys will be ineffective on the universal bar, which at such times will remain. in lower case position both when the type. bar segment is in lower case position. and also when said type bar segment is shifted to upper case position.
The throwing of the universal bar out of the control of: the shift keys and its restora-' tion to such control is preferably effected at will through the actuation of a special key. The supporting frame for the universal bar in the present instance comprises an upright segmental plate or body portion ll.
haisan ear 6O perforated to receive which is adapted to fit into the curv in'g above the type bar pivots. is provided with "straight, lateral eater 42w hich terminate in forwardly curved U 43 in \vhichare fixed downwardly extending pins or hearing devices as. Fixed. to and extending rearward from the plate near its middle is a bearing rod 45 terminating in a head 46 while smallb'earing pins or devices 47 project rearward from said plate near its ends. The rod 45 and pins 47 provide bearings for a slidable universal bar frame, designated as a whole bythereference numeral t8 and comprising a cross bar or $01- tion 49 provided with a central depression 50 to afford play to the ribbon vibrator (not shown). Fixed to and extending real ward and inward from the cross portion are angular branches 51 and 52 which unite in a rearwardly extending stem 53 p with a bearing block 5t that fits o slides on the rod 45. Upright ears at the ends of the cross bar 49 are perforated to fit; over the guide pins 4?. The end portionsof the crossbar are also provided with upwardly extending ears 49 to which are fixed a universal bar proper 56, said unr versal bar being arcuate-in shape and be ing arranged close tothe edge of the sup porting plate or frame 41. Said universal bar is provided with an upturned ledge or lip which is adapted to be actuated directly by shoulders 9 on the type bars The universal bar'is normally maintained forward with the ears 55in contact with the rear face of the plate 41 by a coiled spring 57 which is connected at its rear endto the universal bar frame and at its front is in'chored to said lilate. Movements the iiniversal bar when actuated are limited by the head 46.
i To support and guide the frame 42 and the universal bar devices carried said frame, a pair of brackets 58 are provid d. one secured to each of the posts 2 1 at per front side by screws 59. Each h at and down movement of the universa bar and its supporting: fpdmz parallel with shifting movements of {he type 44. the construction. r.

As a result of this reciprocation of the :escapement devices the carriagev will advance a letter space distance toward the left under the pull of the spring drum or motor. A center type guide 63 of ordinary construction is fixedto the universal bar supporting frame 41, 42 and shifts therewith. The type end of each type bar cooperates with said guide near the end of its stroke and at the printing moment.
The meansfor automatically shifting the universal bar when the case shifting mechanism'is operated by one of the shift key levers 40 comprise connections between the support or frame 41, 42, and the rock shaft 35. Said connections include upright arms 64 pivotally connected by shoulder screws 65 to the side portions 42 of the supporting frame. formed with. eyes which receive flanged bearing'blocksi66 that are held in place by caps 67.. These bearing blocks are provided with downwardly extending lugs 68 having rounded heads .gnd said bearing blocks 66 are perforated to fit loosely over the pins oistuds 32 outside the arms 30. Stationary pins or rods 70 fixed to the sides of the base and projecting laterally inward therefrom in register with or in line with the studs 32' terminate just short of the bearing blocks 66 so as not. tointerfere with the up and down movements of said bearing blocks when the rock shaft 35 is rocked. These rods 70 are of the same diameter as the studs 32 and are adaptedjto receive and support the bearing blocks when the latter are slid outward by means presently to be described for the purpose of disconnecting the universal bar from the case shifting mechanism. The ends of the studs 32 and of the rod 70 are preferably beveled or tapered slightly to facilitate the lateral connecting and disconnecting movements of the hearing blocks and the arms 64. which carry them.
The disconnecting means comprise levers 71 and 72 pivoted at 73 on angular brackets connected by a link or rod 83. The con- The lowerends of the arms 64 are disposed at the right-hand sideof the keyboard? The left-hand lever 72 is substantially upright, comprising an upper slotted arm 81 which loosely engages wlth the lefthand lug 68, said lever further comprising a downwardlyextending arm 82.
. The lever'arrhs 75 and 82 are operatively '85 struction is such that when the special key 80 is operated the extension 78, acting against the arm7 7, will rock the-bell crank 71 and through the rod 83 will also rock the lever 72. The upwardly extending. arms of said lever will swing outward away from each other and will act to shift the bearing blocks 66 laterally outwardon to the stationary pins 70, thus disconnecting the arms 64 from the studs 32 as illustrated by 9 dotted lines in Fig. 1. Following such dis connection it will be understood that anoperation of either of the shift key levers 40 will be efl'ectiveto shift the type bar segment 13 but not the universal bar 56'nor its carrier frame 48, these parts remainlng down 1n lower case position. In order to reconnect the disconnected parts, means are provided comprising a sleeve 84 that is slidably mounted on the left-hand rod 70.. Connected with the sleeve or slide 8'1: is a push rod 85 that passes loosely throughan opening 86 in the left-hand side'of the base I ing in the key 87 at this time the sleeve will contact with the left-hand bearing'block 129 and force it back on to its stud- 32. This; movement of saidbearing. block operates through its lug 68 on a train of devices comprising the lever 72,.rod or link 83and lever 71' to restore the right-hand bearing block 66 to engagement with its stud'32. , simultaneously with said element to change Av modification of theconstruction is illustrated in Fig. 4 wherein the leve'r'79 is replaced by 'a lever 9% pivoted at the rear of the base and provided with the usual restoring spring and finger key. Said lever 914 is provided with a down'ward extension 95 which at its lower end is formed with a slot indicated at 96 in which is loosely en-. gaged the lever arm 77. lien the special 'key lever 9i is depressed the top of the slot 96 engages with the lever arm to rock it and swing the rightliand bearing block. 66
on to its rod 70. At the same time through the link 83 the him-=72 is caused tos'wing the left-hand bearing block to its inopera tire position on its rod 70. lVh-ile the lever 9-1 is maintained depressed by 'one finger,
the-operator may, with the finger of the same-hand, depress the right-hand shift key 40 wh ch is in juxtaposition to the key of the lever 9%; This leaves the left-hand free to operate the printing keys. On releasing the key lever 94 its spring will re- .store it to normal position and the bottom of the" slot 96 engaging with the under side of the lever .arm 77 will operate on the train of devices connected with said lever arm to restore the bearing blocks to engage-. ment with their studs. a Y I Preferably the special key lever 9lisprovided with a locking key of suitable construction, such as that found on the left hand shift key lever of the X0. 10 Remington machine, by which locking key 'said special lever may be locked downto maintain the universal bar 56 withdrawn from 'the control of the shift key mechanism as long as may be desired.
It will be observed that the center-guide 63 is supported independently of the case shifting element. type bar, support or segment 13; that said center guide is shiftable case position: that said center guide is also shiftable. independently of said element; and that said center guide and the support on which it is mounted, hich is-alsothe support of the universal bar, are shiftable from upper case to lower. case position while said element or type bar support remains quiescent.
Various changes hesidesthose specified may he made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
