To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. DE Wrr'r C. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writers, of which the following is a spec1-' ing instrumentalities and moving the platen with relation thereto, or by mounting the platen in a stationary manner and moving the said printing instrumentalities with relation to the platen. However, I prefer, and have illustrated in the attached drawings, the construction in which the platen is stationary and the printing means movable.
Although my invention may be used in machines having various styles of printing devices, such as type wheel, segment or type bar machines, the preferred construction is herein illustrated in which the printing devices consist of a plurality of independently pivoted type bars mounted upon a common support. Each of these type bars is provided with three types which are brought into printing position at different times by the movement of the said type bar support.
I have herein shown my. invention as applied to a typewriter of the so-called visible and front-strike class, the type bar support being movable in a vertical direction, but obviously the invention is also applicable to other styles of machines.
- This application is a division of my prior application, Serial No. 690,756, filed April 15, 1912.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical front to rear section through a typewriting machine embodying the features of my invention. The machine to which I have herein shown my improvements as applied comprises a suitable framework consisting of a lower or base portion 10 and an. upper or deck portion 11.
Since the present invention does not relate to the general mechanism of the machine, I will herein describe only such portions of said mechanism as'assist in understanding this invention, referenceiboing had to my former application above identified for a complete understanding of themachine.
The key lever mechanism for the type bars comprises a series'of key levers 12, only one of which is shown, each of said levers being pivoted on a shaft 13 and connected by means of a link 14 with one arm of a bell crank lever 15. which lever is pivoted upon a shaft 16. The vertical arm of said bell crank lever is connected by a link 17 with a bars 19. The platen is indicated at 20.
The type bar segment 21, which is bestshown in Fig. 2, is mounted in the frame of the machine for vertical movement. Said. segment has three operative positions, of which the middle position is normal, and means, to be later described,is provided for shifting the segment in opposite directions from said normal position. The series of type bars 19 is pivoted on the arcuate' portion of the segment. Said segment is mounted in a frame 22 which has in the present instance three. arm's23 at lower portion resting upon and suitably secured to lugs 24 and 25 extending inwardly from the base 10 of the machine. The frame 22 comprises two vertical side portions having-grooved guide bars 26 mounted thereon. P. eferably, these guide bars are mounted on the ends of screws 27 (Fig. 4) extending through slots 28 in the 'side portions of the frame 22. Said guides are adjustable laterally by screws 29 threaded in the frame andoverlying said guides, the latter screws being locked by set screws 30. The type bar seg ment 21 has two sides 32 having grooves therein complementing the grooves in the guides 26 to form races in which anti-friction balls 33 are mounted: Herein l have shown two halls in each of these races, said balls being spaced ap by means of a spacer plate-311;. As he reinbefore. stated, each of the type bars 19 carries three characters. The mechanism is so arranged that the middle row of types on said bars is used in ordinarywriting, the upper and lower (or inner and outer) rows comprising capital letters, fig ures, or any other desired characters accord ing to the use to which the machine is to be put. Thus only one of the segment-moving means can be operated at a time. The lug.65 also assists in preventing upward bouncing of the segment when shifted downwardly to its lowermost position by reason of the overlying relation of the fingers 56 to said lug Said lug also prevents upward movement of the segment through momentum when the latter is returning from its lowermost to its middle or normal position, be cause the finger 56 continues to overlie the lug 65 until the end of movement of the seg ment. The cams l5 by reason of their shape also assist in preventing movement of the segment through momentum or from bouncing.
lVhile I have herein shown that embodiment oiany invention which is preferred, I would have ,it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact structure disclosed, but aim to cover in the appended claims all modifications which fall within the scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a typewriting machine,-the combi nation with a platen and printing instrumentalities, of case shift mechanism for effecting a relative shifting movement be tween said platen and said printing instrumentalities to any one of three positions, said case shiftmechanism including a movable device operating to shift the movable element to one position, and means connecting said device to said movable element, said means being movable with the movable element to the mentioned-shift position and be ing operable with relation to said movable element for shifting the latter to another position.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with platen and printing instrumentalities, of case shift mechanism for effecting a relative shifting movement between said platen and said printing instrumentalities to any one of three positions, said case shift mechanism including two shift keys, and means operatively connecting one of said keys to the movable element for shifting the latter to one position, said means including a device arranged to shift with the movable element to the mentioned shift position and being operable by the other key with relation to the movable element for shifting said movable element to another position.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of .printing instrumentalities and a platen, one of which is shiftable relatively to the other to any one of three positions,-
means for shifting said shiftable element including a pivoted arm, and a cam member forming a connection between said arm and said shiftable element, said cam member be ing bodily shiftable with said arm in one shifting movement and being movable with relation to said arm in another shifting movement.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing instrumentalities and a platen, one of which elements is shiftable relatively to the other to any one of three positions, of means for shifting said shiftable element incliu'ling a pivoted arm, and a' connection between said shiftable element and said arm at a point spaced from the pivot of the latter, whereby swinging of said arm will bodily reciprocate said connection and sliift said shifta'ble element to one position, said connection including a,
cam arranged to be operated to shift said shift-able element to another position.
In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and printing instrumentalities, one of which elements is shiftable with relation to the other to any one of three positions, of a cam member operatively' associated with the shiftable element, means for bodily moving said cam member to place said shiftable element in one of its shift positions, and means for rocking said cam member to place said shiftable element in another of its shift positions. 6. In a 'typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and printing instrumentalities, one of which elements is shiftable with relation to the other to any one of three positions, the shiftable clement carrying a projection, of a cam mounted for traveling movement and for rocking movement and having a cam slot in which said projection lies, means for causing said camto travel to carry the shiftable element to one position, and means for rocking said cam to change the position of said projection in said cam slot and thereby move said shiftablc element to anothershift position.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen and printing instrumentalities, one of which elements is shift-able relatively to the other to any one of three positions, of means for shifting the shiftablc element including a movable device, and means forming an operative connection between said device and said shiftable element and arranged to be bodily reciprocated by said movable device for moving the shift able element in one direction from its normal position, said means including a cam ope able to move said shiftable element in the opposite direction from its normal position.
8. In a typewriter, in combination, a vertically slidable type bar segment, and means for shifting said segment comprising a pivoted arm, a connection between said arm and said segment, a shift lever pivoted between its ends, one end of said shift lever having a key thereon and the other end having a portion to underlie and engage said arm, and
swing the latter upwardly to shift said type bar segment.
9. In a typewriter, the combination of a framework, a type bar support mounted therein for vertical movement'and hav ng a nmrable type-bar support, apivoted arm, a
cam member connecting the free endof said arm with said type-bar support, and means for'swingingsaid arm and for operating said cam member'with relation to said arm. 11. In a typewriter in combination, a movable type bar support, a pivoted element for moving said support in one direction, and ,a fink operatively connecting said element with said support, said link having means which is operable to move said support in theopposite direction.
12. In a typewriter, in combination, a movable type bar support, a shift lever and means connecting said shift. lever to said support and being bodily reciprocable for moving the latter 'in one direction, said ineans including a pivoted cam operable to move said support in the opposite direction.
13. In a typewriter in combination, a movable type bar support, a pivoted arm, an arm pivoted upon the free end of the first mentioned arm, the second mentioned arm having a cam, a stud on said type bar sup- 'port cooperating with said cam, means for swinging the, first mentioned. arm to move said type bar support in one direction through the medium of the second mentioned arm, and'means' for swinging the second me'ntionedarm to operate said cam and move said support in the opposite direction.
