This 'invention relates to front strike platen-shift machines.

The platen is mounted on a carriage which runs upon a support,'and the support is mounted to shift u p and down to enable dilerent types to print, the carriage being provided with a Jfeeding mechanism.which aecommodates this up-and-down shitting movement. The shittable carriage support can also be swung up to move the carriage bodily out of coperative relation with the types, thereby giving access to the under side ot' the platen and carriage, as well as to that portion of the typewritiug mechanism which lies below the carriage, for the purposes of inspection, cleaning, repair, manipulation, etc.
The carriage-driving spring barrel is mounted to shi-ft with the carriage, which hence need not be formed of two parts hinged together, one part carrying the platen and the other part carrying the rack, which does not shi-tt with the carriage, as heretofore. The letter-feeding dogs are also arranged on the shifting carriage-supporting frame to shift with the carriage, and provision is made whereby the keys iipon the framework of the machine may operate said dogs when the frame and carriage are brought down'into closed relation with the main framework of the machine to coperate The spring-propelled carriage is held against being driven by the spring when the carriage is swung up away from the type bars.
Other features and advantages will hereinatter appear, and my invention further consists in certain combinations of devices, features of construction and arrangement ot parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in' t? concluding claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a front strike writing machine embodying my improvements, one type action being shown in printing position, and the carriage being` shown in full lines in normal position, and in' dotted lines when tilted up to render the ribbon spools accessible to the operator.; the position of the platen when capitals are being written being also indicated by dotted lines below the full-line position. Fig. 2 is a plan; and Fig. 3 is a sectional front view of the ma chine.
In the several views portions are omitted or broken away for the sake of clearness; and like signs denote like parts.
The framework of the machine comprises side walls 1, whose lower portions may be connected to form a base, and a top plate 2 supported upon said walls; a portion of the top plate being depressed, as at 3, to make room for the paper carriage and its supports.
Forwardly extending type bars .4 are pivoted at their'rear ends upon a curved ful- Crum-rod 5 mounted in a/segment 0, and strike rearwardly against a cylindrical or other platen 7. The segment is radially slotted at 8 to receive the type-bar hubs; and preferably both the segment and the fulcrum-wire incline upwardly and rearwardly, so that the types may 'strike upon the front siderof the platen at a point a little above the horizontal plane of the platen axis. Each type-bar is provided with a lower-case type 9 and an upper-case type l0, `the former being uppermost when the type bar is in printing position, although this relation may' be reversed within the scope otmy improvements, and the typehaifs maybe otherwise mounted. The type bars may be operated by any suitable means,

The depressed portion 3 of the top plate is preferably elett, as at 53, to malte room tor the spools, whieh in normal position dip below said depressed portion.
For rotating` the spools, l preferably use a pair of pawls 54, 55, operated at every type stroke, and adapted to engage a pair ol'.

The latter muy be slipped o tl' and onto the axis 47S, being retained by thumb-nuts 5T; and each ratchet wheel may be connected to itsspool by a eollar or other device 5S, so that one spool with its ratchet may turn upon the axis independently ot the other spool and its ratehet.. lt' desired, the member 5S may be splined to the spool,
as at 58a, so as to permit the latter to he slipped oil; or the axis 48 may be divided into two lengt-hs, one fixed lo and revolving with each spool )and ratchet; or any other suitable spool-mounting and revolving means may be employed `within the seope ot my invention. Une rat-:het may be omitted, and the other fixed to an undivided axis', and the spools may-be alternately clamped to the axis by the thinnb-nuts 57, so as to cause the ribbon to wind first on one'spool and then on the other.
From one spool the ribbon 3,9- is led i'or- War ly and upwardly, as at 59, then aerofss the printing point at the front side of the platen, as at 59h, and then back to the'other spool, as at 59C. At the front side of the platen are provided ribbon-guiding arms Gt) 'and 6l, formed at their upper ends with re- .from the rock-shaft 45 of the carriage-snpporting hinged' frame, and arm 67 overlying` the spool-carrying arm 5l. By this vibrator, the ribbon may be lifted to cover the printing point at each impression, as at Fig. t, and depressed to uncover the same; and since the vibrator is mounted upon the hinged frame,'it is carried up with the latter when tilted to the dotted-line position at Fig. l, thus -facilita'ting the reeving of the ribbon from the spools over the guiding arms 62 and 63. Said ribbon-vibrator is operatively connected to carriagefeeding mechanism also mounted upon the hinged carriage-supporting frame and cooperating with a rack 69 on the carriage; said feeding mechanism comprising a detent dog 70 and a feeding dog 71, the latter being normally in engagement with the rack. rl`hese dogs are mounted upon a rocker or rock-shaft T2, mounted upon ears 73 and 'Tel upon the roekshaft 45; and said rocker T2 is provided with an operating arm i5 which curves downwardly 'and rearwardly beneath the rock-shaft. 45, in position to he operated by a finger or tappet 7G projecting forwardly from the upper end of an opstanding rot-kererni 77, fixed upon a rock-shaft TS mounted transversely in the base of the maehine. Said rock-shaft 7S carries near its ends t'orwardly directed arms T9, from which is snspended, by means of rods St), a universal bar 81, extending transversely beneath all oi" the nvm-operating key-levers l2. so as to he operated at each type stroke` and eonipletiim` the train of mechanism whereby the letter feeding movements of the earriage are eontrolled. The universal-bar and rocker TS may'be returned to normal position by aV spring S2; and a returning-spring Si?, l'or the dog-rocker may be coiled about the shaft 72, The connection between the latter and the ribboii-vibrator consists of an arm Si mounted upon shaft 7i), a pull-link 85 connected to saidarm and extending forwardly.y and an arm 8f3 connected to said link and mounted upon the vibrator shaft (itl. By this means, whenever 'the dog-rocker is vibrated by the keys, the vibrator is elevated to cause the ribbon to cover the printing point; and upon the return of the carriagefeeding mechanism to normal position, said vibrator drops to permit the ribbon to uncover the printing point.
The carriage may be propelled by a spring-barrel ST (lligs. Q and 3), -mounted upon an arm 8S, projecting laterally and downwardly from the side-bar 441 of the hinged caridage-supporting frame; and a strap 88 may connect the spring-bai 'el to the carriage. mounting botn the spring barrel and the carriage-feeding mechanism upon the hinged frame, the latter is permitted to swing freely up and down, without liability of deranging the carriage-coiiti-olling devices, which always maintains their proper relation to the carriage, although by reason of the arm 75 swinging away from the finger TG, the latter cannot of course operate the feeding mechanism when the earriag'e is tilted up.
'The ribbon-feeding pawls 54 and may be pivoted at their rear ends upon arms S9 npstanding from the universal-bar rocker 78.. and provided with draw-springs 5)() eonneetedat their lower ends to the. pawls and at. their upper ends to the arms whereby the pawls may be held in engagement with 'the ratchet wheels 5G; eaeh pawl being' provided with a stop 91, to prevent undue upward movement thereof when the ratchet wheels are swung away from the pawls at. the tiltingy up of the carriage. Behind the pawls is mounted in the side walls of the machine va horizontal shaft 92, havingA an operating handle 93, and ':arrying wings tlf-l, 95, the latter being shown as lifting an arm 9G projecting rearwardly from the pawl so as to hold the toothed end of the latter down out of enojagement with its ratchet wheel. The shaft may be rocked to depress the wing 95 and allow .said pawl to retin-` gago the ratehet-wheeh while the other wing Slt rises and lifts an arm 9T provided upon the other pawl, and throws the latter ont, of eiigageinent'.y whereby the feed of the ribbon is reversed. Any other suitable ribbonfeeding' and reversing ribbon may be eniployed, and the ribbon .spools may be otherwise disposed within the limits of my invention. Preferably advantage is also taken of the hinging ofl the carriage-support. to enable the latter t'o'be shifted up and down tol enable different types to print. Normally the carriage and platen are in an elevated position, as seen in full thereby enablingl the lower-case types 9 to print; while by`depressing the carriage and platen (the latter in its depressed position being indicated by a dotted circle atlfig. l), the upper-case types l() are venabled to print. rIhe downward movement of the carriage is limited by a pair ofadjustalole stops 98, and

The application No. 153,024, iled- April 17, 100B, contains claims covering ribbon'devices, and the present application is intended to cover `platen shitting and correlated devices all independently ot the ribbon devices.
1 do not claim to be the first inventor of an up-and-down shifting platen. Certainof my improvements, however, are applicable where .the platen shifts up and down,'the exact direction of such movement beingirnmaterial.l In using the term vertically in suoli claims as cover said improvements, I intendtto include all movements in an upand-.down direction.
'Illaving thus described my invention, I claim:
