lMPROVEMENT IN HEMMERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,179, dated July 21, 1874; application fil d June 16, 1874.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT PRICE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in the Hemmers Attached to Sewing-Machines; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hemmers used on sewing-machines; and consists in making a hemmer as hereinafter described, so that it will make any-sized hem desired.
My hemmer is constructed as follows, reference being made to the accompanying drawmgs.
I take two pieces of any kind of metal, and bend one piece, A, as shown at a. b c f, and the other, B, I bend as shown at d e t then I rivet these two pieces together at z. j and t are hooks, bent on the bottom of these two pieces, marked a b c and d e, and these two lips form or make the hem on the cloth when they come together. By means of a spiral spring and thumb-screw, I regulate the distance apart of these two lips, so as to adapt them to the thickness of the cloth forming the hem. At the bottom of piece a b c is formed a groove to receive a sliding piece, 7:, that moves in and out in said groove, so as to regulate the size of the hem. l is a piece of metal or spring, that keeps the hem in its place as it goes under the needle, to be sewed. A hole is to be made through side (1 e, to screw the hemmer to the machine.
I claim The hemmer herein described, consisting of the parts A B, having lips f t, and screw, and spring, and adjustable piece k, all operating as and for the purpose described.
