Tajall whom it mm mama;
Be it known that ,ILAi RrrZSOPiIUs HAAs- TED, engineer, a subjectflof the King of Norway, residing at Dram'men, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Stop Blocks for' ltailways; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull,
clear, andexact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had "to the accoinpanying drawings, and? to'fle tt'ers.- or figures of reference marked 'theron, which form a part of this specification. l
My invention relates' todetachable stop blocks, adapted to be fastened to a: rail for the purpose of preventing cars standingon a side track from leaving the same.
In the following the invention shall be described with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating by way of example two executional forms of my improved stop block;
Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively a side view and an end view of an executional form of the stop block.
Figs. 3 and 4 are corresponding views of the other form. The stop block is made up of two separate members a and b, whose inner faces are formed so as to fit exactly about a rail as shown in the drawings.
In the form illustratedin Figs. 1 and 2 there are fastened to one of said members, that is, the member a, two, or more bolts (Z protided' with flat heads 6, and the other member I) of the stop block is provided with corresponding holes f 7, having on one side slot shaped elongations g, g, of a width corresponding to the diameter of the bolt stems d. l
Near their upper edges the members a and b are provided with corresponding elongated slots h, through which is slipped a handle ring 2', serving also to keep the parts together when the stop block is detached.
Further the members a and b are provided with correspondin holes 31' for the insertion of a bolt provi ed with alocking device.
, When the stop block is to be mounted on a rail the two members a and b are placed one on each side of the rail with the bolt stems being moved into the slotsg, thereby.
locking the two members a and btogether by aidof the bolt heads 6 and thereby also clamping the lower parts of said members on the rail.
Finally the locking bolt is inserted through .the two holes j "now registering with eacli other,this bolt being preferably provided with locking 1neanspreferably a control lock,in order to prevent the removal of thestop block by unauthorized persons.
The flatheaded bolts (5 may be replaced by other locking means. In Figures 8 and 4, each member; at, b is provided at one end with a laterallyextendingv tongue mbent to form a hook adapted to engage the outer face of the opposite member.
When the stop block is to be mounted on a rail the two members a, b are placed one on each side of the rail, whereupon the two members are displaced longitudinally relatively to each other, until the tongues on grip tightly about the edges of the members a, and b respectively and thereby clampthe lower parts of the members 'ontothe rai Finally a locking bolt j is inserted through the two holes 7' now in register with each other, this bolt being preferably provided with locking means, preferably a control lock n.
Insteadfof having the members a, Z) or a b interconnected by a handle ring these parts may also be interconnected by means of a bolt 70, arranged longitudinally to the stop block (see Figs. 3 and 4c) the two parts a, 7) being swung about this bolt. when the stop block is to be attached to the rail or detached from the same. This bolt 70 also forms a guide for the relative longitudinal displacements of the parts a b, and is provided with a projection or stop 9' limiting said longitudinal displacement.
Claims:
1. A stop block for railways comprising two rail clamping members, means connecting said members to permit relative longitudinal movement thereof, and tongues on the ends of said members, operable by a relative longitudinal movement of the latter, adapted to effect an interlocking of said mimbers when the latter register with each ot er.
2. A st o block for railways comprising two clamping members, means connecting ment with the edge of the opposingplate said members permit relative longitudinal movement thereof, tongues on the: ends of said members, operable by a relative longitudinal movement of the latter, adapted to efl'ect an interlooking'of said members, and a bolt adapted to be projected through said members to maintain them in locked" relation when in registerwith each other.
' 3. A stop block for railways comprising two clamping plates having lower portions to grip the sides of a rail, a boltconneoting said members abovethe grippingportion to permit relative longitudinal movement ofi said plates, and a laterally extending tongue formed on each plate for loeklng engageto grip the sides of a rail, a bolt connecting said members above the gripping portion. to
permit relative longitudinal movement 01:
said plates, a, laterally extending tongue :0 formed on each plate for loekingengagement with the edge of the opposing plate when said plates are moved into operative position, and a bolt adapted to project through the plates to prevent disengagement of'the tongues i 5, A stop block for railways comprising two clamping plates having lower inner face portions to grip the sides of a rail, a bolt fiiied'in the upper portion of one plate and extending longitudinally thereof, and 011 which the other plateais inovablelongitudinally, means to limit the. relative longitudinal movement of said plates, a hook formed on one end of each plate adapted to engage the opposing edge of the opposite plate,vand a. bolt passingthrough said plates to prevent. relative longitudinal movement thereof.
In testimony that I clainrtlie foregoing as my invention, 1. have signed my name 1nv presenoeof two subscribing. witnesses.
