plify devices of this character and render the same more efiicient and durable in use.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a combined rail tie and fastener, in which the tie is provided with seats to receive the rails, the 'tie also having clamping members detachably connected thereto for engagement with the rails to detachably connect the same to the tie.
With these and other objects in view, my
invention consists in the novel construction,
combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure l is a side elevational view partly in section of my improved device; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig l; and Fig. 4- is a bottom plan view of one of the clamping members.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, the numeral 1 designates a tie construct ed in accordance with my invention.
Formed in the upper face of the tie adjacent its opposite ends are recesses 2 and projecting inwardly from'the ends of the tie to extend over the outer ends oi the recesses are overhanging lips or tongues 3, which are adapted to engage the outer base flanges of the rails t. The base wall. of each of the recesses at its inner end is raised as at 5 to provide a shoulder 6 at the juncture of the raised portion and the body portion of the recess, and a shoulder 'i at the juncture of the raised portion with the body of the tie. The body portion of each recess is provided with a longitudinal groove 8 therein which extends from a point adjacent the shoulder 6 to the outer extremity of the recess below its overhanging lip 3 and is provided with a concaved base wall 9.
Formed in the raised portion 5 of each Specification of Letters Patent.

I #36 Mounted in each of clamping member 11 each of t' members being cut away on f i at its outer end to provide an ore is; lip 18 for engagement with the inner We flange of its respective rail. The under face of each clamping member at its inner end is cut-away to provide a reduced portion and a shoulder 15 at the juncture :oi th reduced portion with the main. portion 3 its member, the reduced por'i .l" adapted to rest upon the r; of its respective recess, and tremity of the clamping membe to engage against the should duced portion 14 at its juncture body of each member provided. central lug 16 torr an engageinpocket 10 of its recess, the shou ing adapted to ei'igage a inst the 6 of the recess wher I her and the recess.
Formed on the lower face 0? i'ng member at its cute? end projecting tongue 1?, the and P which is curver. as at 18 to coni ll curvature of the coneaved. base the groove in each recess, of substantially the the l grooves, and being adapt the base flanges oi? "the r clamping members is pro led of openings 19 which register v:
screws, or other similar fa 20 by means of which the clear 1? ,4 bers are'secured. to the tie loci: 1.1 thereto.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the under faces of the overhan beveled to conform to the 5 tion or" the upper faces of i flanges of the rails, and the extended outwardly slightly i 3, to provide dowrrwardlv "l 21' against which the tongues 7.? engage, wi rails prevented, members 930 become sli 5 the c amping members.
In the practical use of my improved tie and fastener, the rails .4; are placed upon the .tie so that the overhanging lips 3 engage the outer base flanges of the rails, where- .10 upon the clamping members are placed in position, by holding the same vertical and placing the outer extremities of the tongues 17 in the inner ends of the grooves 8, and
' moving the clamping members downwardly and outwardly so as to slide the tongues within the grooves to extend beneath the rails, so'that the-lips 13 engage the inner base flanges of the rails, and the lugs 16 engage in the pockets 10. \Vhen the clamping 20- members are in this position, the fastening devices 20 are disposed-in the registering 'o enings' 19 and 11 to securely lock the clamping members to the tie whereby the rails are'held in position on the tie between the lips 3 and 13.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided an im proved and fastener which is extremelysimple in construction, and by means of which the rails of the track may be quickly secured in operative position, or released from the tie. I
Having thus fully described my inven- Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a rail tie having elongated recesses formed in its upper face adjacent its ends, said tie having inwardly tion, what I desire to claim and secure by 40 extending overhanging lips projecting above the outer ends of said recesses and adapted for engagement against the outer base flanges of the rails, each of said recesses having a longitudinal groove formed in its base wall, said grooves extending from points adjacent the inner ends of the recesses to points slightly beyond the outer ends of j the overhanging lips to provide downwardly facing shoulders, of clamping members adapted for engagement in said recesses, said clamping members being formed with overhanging lips for engagement with theinner base flanges of the rails, and said clamping members having outwardly projecting tongues formed on their lower faces for engagement Within the grooves below the rails, the free extremities of said cl amp ing members being adapted to engage beneath said downwardly facing shoulders.
The combination with a rail tie having recesses formed in its upper face adjacent its ends, said tie being'formed with overhanging lips extending above the outer ends of the recesses for engagement against the outer base flanges of the rails, each of said recesses having a longitudinal groove formed in its base wall and extending under said overhanging lips, the inner ends of the base walls of said recesses being formed with raised portions to provide outwardly facing shoulders, the raised portion of each. recess being formed with an outwardly opening pocket, of clamping members adapted for engagement in said recesses, the under faces of said clamping members being cut away at their inner ends to provide reduced portions for engagement against the raised portions of the base Walls of said extending tongues formed in the under faces of said clamping members for engagement in said grooves below the rails.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. ALBERT B. HIGGINS. Witnesses:
