- This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in metallic railway ties and fasteners and has for its primary object a durable and efficient construction of device of this character wherein the tie will possess to a marked degree the characteristics of simplicity, strength, durability, capability of being easily ballasted and rigidity, and wherein the fastening devices will so contact with the tie as to hold the rail securely and be capable of ready application and withdrawal or removal as required. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed September 4, 1915. Serial No. 49,068.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RODNEY S. GANDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vineland, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway-Ties and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in metallic railway ties and fasteners and has for its primary object a durable and efficient construction of device of this character wherein the tie will possess to a marked degree the characteristics of simplicity, strength, durability, capability of being easily ballasted and rigidity, and wherein the fastening devices will so contact with the tie as to hold the rail securely and be capable of ready application and withdrawal or removal as required. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this character so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a metallic tie and rail fastener embodying the improvements of my invention, parts being shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with parts in section and other parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the rail fastening devices shown in section. Fig. 4 is a detailed view of one of the fastening devices; and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View through the tie.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the top of my improved hollow metallic tie, 2 the downwardly diverging sides of the tie and 3 the bottom thereof. This tie may be formed out of steel and stamped and shaped by suitablemachinery, as is evident, and may be of any desired size the completed tie and the openings being preferably arranged in series of four, having a quad-rectangular disposition, whereby either diagonally disposed pair may be used in connection with the fastening device hereinafter described, to hold the rail or whereby all four may be used if desired, where extreme rigidity and very secure fastening means are required as, for example, around sharp curves.
Each opening 4 includes a middle substantially circular portion 5 terminating at each side in a preferably oblong end 6, as clearly illustrated in the drawing. I Coacting with the openings 4 are the looking devices. Each locking device comprises a key 7 which is formed at its upper end with an upwardy projecting preferably rectangular lug 8, with a head 9 below the lug, said head being formed with a beveled lug 10 designed to extend over the adjoining base flange of a rail, with a flat surface 11 on the lower side of the head adapted to rest upon the top 1 of the tie, with a substantially round neck 12 below the head and adapted to be seated in and accommodated by the middle portion 5 of a slot 4 and below said neck with a lateral elongated portion 13, the upper surface of which constitutes shoulders projecting in opposite directions from the neck, the laterally widened portion at the lower end of the key being designed for insertion in and through the slot or opening 4, whereupon, when the shoulders 13 pass below the lower wall of the top 1 of the tie the key may be turned substantially at right angles to the length of the slot and engage the base flange of the rail, the shoulders I?) obviously preventing any accidental retraction of the key and assuring that the rail will be securely held in place, until the key is turned.
In order to prevent the key from being accidentally turned, 1 form a vertical groove or recess 14 in the back of the head 9, said recess mergin into a flattened portion 14 at the back of the neck, the latter, together with the recess 14 being substantially co-eX- tensive in width to the width of the end of the slot 4 with which it registers. Thus a pin 15 may be readily inserted into the adjoining end of the slot and be received in the recess 14 whereby it will securely prevent the key from being accidentally turned and the rail will thus be held in a very secure and rigid condition.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it
will be seen that I have provided a very durable, rigid and efficient construction of railway tie and fastener whereby the rails may be very quickly held in place without the necessity of driving spikes and whereby the rails, when once in position will be very securely held, without any danger of becoming accidentally deranged.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim: I y I The combination with a tie formed with slots for the reception of rail holding devices, each slot including a widened portion and a reduced end, of a rail holding key provided with a head adapted to engage the base flange of a rail, with a round neck receivable in the widened portion of the slot and with shoulders below the neck adapted to extend through the slot for the purpose specified, the head being formed on its rear side with a vertically disposed recess and the neck at its rear being formed with a flattened portion forming a continuation of the recess, and a pin adapted to he slipped into one end of the slot back of the key and receivable in said recess and lying against the flattened portion of the neck whereby to secure an increased bearing surface against the key, as set forth.
