UNITED I STATES- FREDERICK s. ivractunnor MURRAYVILLE, BRITISH CQLUMBIA, CANADA.
CLAW HAMMER.
Application filed January 5,1924. Serial No. 684,559.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F REDERICK S. MA
CLURE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, reslding at Murrayvllle, 1n the Provlnce of 7 British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Claw Hammers, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to a supp-lemon tary attachment to an ordinary claw hammer, which attachment is designed to confer a greater range of extracting movement to the claw.
lVith the ordinary claw the extracting e'f fort is due to the curved portion of the claw rolling on the surface of the wood in which is the nail to be withdrawn. Although the effort exerted to extract a nail is considerable in the earlier part of the movement, the range of that movement is not sufficient to withdraw the nail, so that a piece of wood is commonly packed under the curved portion of the claw in order to effect further withdrawal of the nail.
To meet this requirement, I provide the hammer head with a supplementary heel, which, though removable, is designed to form a relatively permanent attachment as when not in use, it can be retained against the hammer head, with which it conforms, so as not to interfere with its ordinary use as a hammer.
The device is fully described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a hammer head with the device applied, and
Fig. 2 shows the supplementary device detached, and in perspective.
In these drawings 2 represents the hammer and 3 the claw end of the hammer head. The supplementar Y extracting device consists of a cylindrical heel 5 upwardly bent from the end of a. plate 6, preferably of sheet steel, which plate normally extends tangentially over the curved portion of the claw 3 from approximately the midlength of the hammer head, as shown in Fig. 1. The side edges of the plate 6 are turned up as at 7 to engage the width of the hammer head and afford support to theend of the plate 6 on which is the heel 5.
The sides 7 extend from adjacent the heel 5 to adjacent the beginning of the hammer 2, when the heel or fulcrum 5 is in contact with the bend of the claw 3, as shown by the full lines in Fig. 1.
This member-5, 6, 7 is retained on the hammer head by a. pin 8 projecting from each side of the head into an elongated aperture 9 in each side 7.
The length of the aperture is such as will allow the plate 6 to turn to the positions indicated by the dot and dash lines. In the position indicated by the double dot and dash lines the end of the plate 6 is in contact with the end of thehammer head with the pin 8 at the end of the aperture 9.
The heel member 5 is held in the normal position represented by the full lines in Fig. 1 by a pin 10 projecting from one or both sides of the head into a notch 12 in the end of the upturned edges 7 from which engagement it may be withdrawn and moved into engagement with another pin or pins- 11 supporting it at an intermediate position.
The device is thus retainedin its connection tainable with the claw alone; that when not required does not interfere with the ordinary use of the hammer and yet is readily available when required; that affords a 'considerable range of movement for nall ex tracting and that does not injure the surface of the wood. j l
Having now particularly described my invention I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letter Patent, is:
1. A fulcriun for a clawi hammer, comprising a thin plate of metal the side edges of which are turned at right angles to fit the width of the hammer head and the end of which is bent toward the same side to form a heel, and means for connecting the same to the hammer head and for adjusting the position of the heel in relation to the claw of the head.
2. A fulcrum for a claw hammer, comprising a plate. of thin sheet metal the sides of which are upturned t0 fit the width of the heel in relation to the claw, the end of each hammer head and the end of which is upwardly turned side of the plate having a 1 turned to form the heel, each upwardly notch to engage one of a series of pins in the turned side having a corresponding el0nhammer head to retain the heel in the posigated aperture in it adapted to receive a tion to which it may be set.
pin, the ends of which project from the sides In testimony whereof I affix my signature of the hammer head, on which pin the plate may be turned to vary the position of the FREDERICK S. MACLURE.
