* UNITED STATES JENNIE M. GOON, 0F BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER AND CORSET.
Application filed February 25, 1924. Serial 695,027.
T 0 all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, JENNIE M. CooN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Abdominal Supporters and Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
I This invention relates to a supporter and corset, and particularly to a construction wherein an abdominal supporter is connected to form part of the corset. In prior constructions where the supporter is connected to the front of the corset when the wearer is in sitting position the corset moves upward carrying the supporter with it so that when she arises the supporter is displaced from proper position. I
It has also been found that when the connecting straps between the supporter and corset are attached upon a single line there is an unpleasant strain exerted fro-m either the sides or the back of the corset where such attachment is made and the weight to be carried by the supporter is not distributed at different points so as to effect the most comfortable application of the supporter to the corset.
The present invention provides a novel and improved construction wherein the corset is provided with an abdominal supporter comprising a pad having connecting straps extending from the side edges thereof and each secured in a different vertical plane at the back of the corset.
A further object of the invention is to provide a corset which will completely enclose the supporter, the latter being secured thereto by adjustable straps extending from the sides of the supporter each to a different parallel stayed pocket at the rear of the cOrSe't.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective with parts broken away, showing the application of the invention- Figure 2 is a similar view of the rear of the corset;
Figure 3 is an elevation of the interior of the corset with the supporter attached; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged front elevation of the supporting pad.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
The numeral 10 designates the corset which may be of any desired construction or configuration butis preferably provided with 'a depending skirt portion '11 and formed with parallel substantially vertical pockets containing the usual stays. These stays extend for substantially the entire length of the pockets at the rear of the corset and form semi-rigid supporting points for the attachment of the supporter, as will be hereinafter described.
The staysat the front of the corset are reduced in length so that the lower portion 13 of the front skirt thereof which lies over the supporter is substantially flexible, the length of these stays being indicated by dotted lines in Figures '1 and 2. The corset is provided with the usual lacings 1 1 for proper fitting adjustment and the fastening devices'15 at the front thereof.
The supporter comprises a pad 16 of substantially oval shape and formed in two sections detachably connected at the front by fastening devices 17. These sections may be provided with the usual pockets 18 carrying supporting stays to retain the supporter in proper shape. From the upper side edges of the supporter attaching straps 19 extend and are connected at 20 to the stay pockets at the middle of the back. These straps'l9 are provided at the front with an adjusting buckle 21. The lower side edges of the supporter are provided with corresponding attaching straps 22 and straps 23 intermediate thereof and the straps 19, these being permanently secured at 24 to the pad and adjustably connected at 25 to a stay pocket at the back of the corset where an adjusting buckle 26 is provided.
It will be noted that the points of attachment for the several straps are disposed in parallel vertical planes each to a different stayed pocket so that a rigid point of at tachment is secured for the supporter and the strain of the weight carried thereby distributed so that all pulling action upon the corset is avoided.
The invention provides a construction by which the supporter and corset may be fitted to the wearer and so adjusted as to lift and support the abdomen Without applying such strain upon the corset as to render the same uncomfortable and avoids the use of elastic connections as well as side openings in the corset, it being desirable to form the cor-' set with a skirt which will completely enclose and assist in retaining the supporter in position and presents a simple, economically constructed and very efficient means for attaching to a corset an abdominal supporter particularly designed for use in corsets built for stout persons.
While the specific details of construction of the corset and supporter have been disclosed still the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as recited in the following claim.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a corset having stay pockets at its back extending above and below the waist line, of an abdominal supporter comprising a pad formed of separable members, and substantially parallel spaced connecting straps secured to the side edges of said pad and each attached to the pockets of said corset in different vertical planes, the points of attachment being progressively spaced greater distances from the rear center line of the garment in a downward direction.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
