CORSET.
Application led January 14, 19,21. Serial No. 437,219.
To all whom z'tmay concer/n: Y
Be it known that I, GAYLORD A. Banonnr, a citizen of the United "States, residing at `Newark, in the county of Essex and State of'New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsl in Corsets, and l do hereby declare `the following tofbe full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it rappertains to make and use the same. S f y This invention relates to improvements in body garments, and more particularly to abdominal pads therefor' and attachments thereof.v
Among the objects in view is the provision of a divided or sectional pad as distinguished from a one-piece pad and possessed 0f utility superior to a one-piece pad.
"With these and other objects in view as will in part hereinafter become apparent and in part be stated, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements ofparts as subsequently'specified and claimed.
` In the accompanying drawings,-
Figurel 1s a' front view of a garment em bodying the features of the present invenf tion.
Figure 2 is an eleyationofk a fragmentof the garment showing the manner of attachment of the pad-retaining straps. y*
Figure 3 is an elevation of the sectional pad detached, parts of the retaining straps being broken away and a portion of the main section of the pad l Figure 4 is a perspective view of a fragment of the trating one of the retaining buckles.l
Figure 5 is a fragmentary,"sectional view taken on the planes indicated'by line 5-5 of Figure. 2. l
lReferring to the drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the main garment which consists of the body of a corset or like article-of apparel "adapted to encircle the waist and abdominal areas of the wearer. The corset or main body 1 is opened'at the` front and provided withv the usual hooks and eyes 2, 2, for securing the edges of the garment together along the opening. Adjacent the linerof opening the garment is also formed with an opening laced as indicated at 3, for variations in the size and tof the garment,
as is" customary in apparel of this vgarment 1 ings formed strap 1() being turned back.-
main body ofthel garment illusfA n f form to such taper.
lAlong the) side portions in the body of are arranged eyes 4 consisting, preferably,
hereinafter mentioned. A vertical series of the eyes 4 is arranged along each side portion and each eye is preferably bound by metallic 'edging such as an appropriate grommet. Each ofy said grommets is slotshaped so as to conform to the transverse where the `grommets appear isof sufficient thickness and stability to prevent the grommets from tearing out. y
` Within the garment 1 is'arranged an abdominal pad consisting of two sections, one of which I willidesignate as the main section 5 and the other as the supplemental section 6, the'two sections being connected together by glove buttons or other appropriate.- connecting means 7, 7.v To the free edge of section 5 are connected attaching straps 8, 8, and to the free edge of section 6 are connected similar straps t), 9. Any attaching strap 10` is'connected to the `main`section 5 along ythe lower edge thereof for the full width'of the section and extends beyond the 85 side edges Of Jthe section a ldistance sufficient to serve as two attaching straps one for each vertical edge of the pad. Thus the extends past and overlaps the secignorie-C character. 56
of elliptical or elongated open-V Y through the body of the garf vment .for the passage` of pad-retaining strips 60 tion 6, and thelower edge of the pad 5 90 tapered as best seen in'Fig- 10 positioned to con? The lowermost glove button -7 has its outer section connected not onlyl through the section the strap l0, so as to engage with and disengage from the scetion of the button carried by section 6l without being interfered with by the presence of the strap 10.
is preferably ure 3 with the'strap 5, but also through v Along the outer surface of the garment 1 100 in the rear ofeach row of eyes 4 is attached a flap 11 to 'which are connected straps 12,
12, each carrying a buckle 13. It will be noted that there are as mlany buckles 13 for each flap k11 as there are eyes 4 at the respective side of he, garment 1, and the buckles are arranged in line with the eyes so as to readily receive vthe straps 8, 9 and 10. lt will also be noted that there are a greater' number of eyes el; and buckles 13 than there are attaching straps 9 and '19, there being` the equivalent ot' three attaching straps extending from each vertical edge of the abdominal pad-'made up of the `sec tions 5 and 6. As the pad is arranged inside of the garment l, the straps 8, 9 and 10 mustbe passed throughv eyes 4 to reach buckles 13 which are arranged outside of the garment, and the factA that there are more of the eyes and bucklesvthan there are ist-raps at each side enables vertical adjustment of the abdominalV pad by the placing of the pad with its straps in higher or lower eyes according to the location desired for the pad.
lt is also to be noted that the strap l() is particularly ad fantageously arranged for receiving stresses and for delivering the weight and pressure of lower parts of the abdomen to the sides of the garment l and thence to the body of the wearer. Strain on the edges of the pad and on the sections be'- tween the straps 8 and 9 and the respective sections of the pad, and also strain'on the glove buttons 7 is largelyV eliminated or avoided by having such` strains taken up directly by the strap l0.
In practical operation, the present improved garment is applied to the body of the wearer by having the garment opened along the line normally closed by the hooks and eyes 2 and by having section 5 in its proper position relative to the garment with the three straps 8, 8 and 10 extending through the eyes 4 and connected with the buckles 13, the section 6 being also in position with its straps 9, 9 passed through the eyes 4t at the other side of garment l andy connected to their respecive buckles 13, the end portion of strap l() at that side at which the section G appears being left disconnected and the sections 5 and G being left also disconnected. Thus the entire garment with its pad being in an open position is 'placed bodily around the waist and abdomen of the wearer andthe sections of glove buttons 7, are snapped together for connecting the sections of the abdominal pad. The free end portion of strap l0 is thenpassed through the proper eye t and laced into-its respective buckle 13 and drawn to the tightened position as desired by the wearer. The hooks and eyes 2 are then connected and the garment is in place. To remove the garment l, it is only necessary to release the free end portion ot strap l0 from its buckle at that side where the straps 9 appear, to unhook the hooks and eyes 2, and open the buttons 7. Thereupon the garment may be drawn bodily away from the person of the wearer.
The abdominal pad thus constructed is especially well adapted for use in surgical cases, or in instances where -it is desired to of the other section, and an attaching strap for one of the sections extending past the" other section.
2. In a bodygarment, a pad comprising separable sections, quicklyv detachable means YSO connecting the sections together, anattach-` mg strap extending from one edge of one section, an attaching strap extending from and extending from both edges thereof, one
of the extensions of the last-named strap projecting past the other section.`
In a body garment, a pad "comprising separable sections, quickly detachable means connecting the sections together, attaching` straps for the pad extending from the edges thereof, vand an attaching strap'extending entirely across and secured to the pad and projecting from both edges thereof, the last'- named strap being attached to one of the sections only.
Ll. in a body garment, a pad comprising separable sections, quickly detachable means connecting the sections together, attaching straps for the pad extending from the edges thereof, andl an attaching strapV extending entirely across and secured to the pad and projecting from both edges thereof, the lastnamed strap being attached to one of the sections only and being loca-ted alongthe lower edge of the pad.
5. In a body garment,'thecombination with a corset body, of a sectional pad arranged therein, quickly Vdetachable means connecting the sectionsV of the pad together,
attaching straps extending from` opposite edges of the sections, an attaching strap extending across both sections andconnected to one of the sections and having vend portions extending away from the strap; the corset body being formed witheyes for the passage of the ends of the last-mentioned strap and the other attaching straps,- and means for connecting'the straps to the exterior portion of the corset body.
6. In a body garment, the' combination witha corset body, of an abdominal pad within the corset body, having laterally ex tending "attaching straps, the corsetn body being' formed Vwitheyes for the passage of the straps from the interior to the exterior of the corset body, strips fixed vto and extending along the corset body and forming flaps, straps secured' in the flaps and ex` p the opposite edge of the other section, and
attaching' strap connected to one section tending toward the first-mentioned straps, In testimony whereof I aHlX my signaand attaching Clucklles l'or the rs-mentone ture in presence of two Witnesses.
