Description
A'. A. 81. A. HOTCH KISS.
Cu rry Comb.
"Patented July 8, 1-856.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. A. HOTCHKISS AND ANDREVV HOTCHKISS, OF SHARON, CONNECTICUT.
GURRYGOMB.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,294, dated July 8, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AsAHEL A. Ho'rcH- kiss and ANDREW HoTcHKIss, of the town of Sharon, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Method of Constructing Currycombs, it being an improvement upon the currycomb heretofore patented to Andrew Hotchkiss by Letters Patent bearing date March 18, 184:9; and we'do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, represents the shape of the plate from which the curry comb is struck up. Fig. 2, represents the back or brace, and Fig. 8 represents a perspective of the complete curry comb.
In order to form the body and teeth of the comb, we take a piece of iron or other metal of a square or rectangular form 1101- lowed in and rounded at the corner, letter a. a a a, in the right shape to draw up in a quarter circle, of proper thickness and size having relation to the due stifiness of the teeth, and the size being each as to furnish sufficient surface of material to construct the comb, when it is folded up and formed to its complete shape as the same is delineated in the accompanying drawings which we declare to be a part of this specification. In said drawings the piece of iron or other .metal intended to be formed into the shell of the comb is represented in Fig. 1.
On all sides the piece of iron or other metal by the aid of suitable tools and machinery, teeth of a proper size are cut as represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, leaving only the oval corners a, a, a, a, not so cut into teeth. The corners of the comb instead of being slitted and bent up, and around each other and being fastened by a rivet at each corner as in the comb patented by the said Andrew Hotchkiss aforesaid and of which this is an improvement are in our mode of constructing curry combs out in a circular form and then drawn up (to a height not interfering with the teeth of the comb) by the aid of suitable dies in a circular manner unbroken and supported by the natural stiffness of the plate Without the use of-rivets. The outer edge being an unbroken edge of iron or other metal. The outer edges of the comb so cut into teeth are now to be bent up at right angles with the plate. Fig. 1, by said dotted lines are also to be bent up in like manner at right angles with the flat surface of metal, they being parallel with the sides and to such a height as to make the center teeth effective.
Fig. 2, represents the back of the said comb, which is to be riveted to Fig. l, the shell part of the comb.
The small circles in the cut represent the rivets, prolongations of the back project at each upper corner of the comb, and serve as knockers represented in Fig. 2, by 00, 0a. The
back is riveted to the shell, Fig. 1, forming the comb complete.
Having thus fully described the nature of our invention we would state that we do not claim striking up, or forming a curry comb from a solid sheet or piece, as this was patented to Andrew Hotchkiss on the 13th March 49. But
What we do claim as new and desire to secure in the manufacture of curry combs 1s- The turning of solid corners upon the shell to save riveting as set forth, and the serrating of the ends of the shell to form teeth thereonthe corners of the plate being first scolloped out so as not to project beyond the teeth after they are bent up into shape, as-
set forth and represented.
A. A. HOTCHKISS. ANDREW HOTCHKISS.
Signed in presence of ELIsHA KNIGHT, HARRY LooKweoD.
