O. G. AULD AND J. S. \VHITING, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
RIFFLE FOR GOLD-WASHING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,847, dated May 13, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OSSIAN G. AULD and JASPER S. \VHITING, of Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Riflie for Saving Fine Gold; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The nature of our invention consists in making the openings in our riftle of such a shape, that in gold washing with a cur- ,VVhen made of iron the upper surface is perforated with circular holes, of from a half an inch to an inch in diameter, and extending one quarter way through the thickness of the metal, until they meet corresponding circular holes entering from the lower side, with a diameter from two to three times as greatthus forming cylindrical spaces on the lower side, with a height of three quarters the thickness of the metal and terminated above by flanges surrounding the openings or holes mentioned before.
When made of Wood and metal, the wood is first perforated with circular holes of any suitable size and then covered with sheet or cast iron or any other metal, also perforated with circular holes of a less diameter, so placed as to come above the former, and form similar cylindrical spaces to those above referred to. Sectional views of these spaces will be seen in the accompanying drawings.
What we claim as new, in riffie boxes, and for which we desire to secure Letters Patent is The use of circular cavities or receptacles, constructed in the manner herein shown, having the neck of one diameter and the lower portion of an enlarged diameter, so as to operate in the manner specified.
OSSIAN Gr. AULD. JASPER S. WHITING.
