Beit k'i'iown thatl, Piiignirr F; FLAGG, a citizen of` the United States, and resident of Dubuque, int'he county of Dubuque and State' of Iowa, have invented; certainnew andl usefuly Ii'npioveineiits in Interlocking GapsforRolls; and I doliereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. y Y
Ylhis invention relates tointerlocking caps for hollow' rolls *off sheet materiali,` and although adapted for a variety of'iis'es, is particularly directed to an interlocking car` for roofing rolls.
In roofing iolls as heretofore constructedl it has been customary to either leave the interior hollow portions open or else to close them by means of tapered plugs drawn towards each other by a bolt extending longi tudinally thru the roll. This latter prac ticel has, however, the seiious objection oi obstruct-ing the space within the roll which prevents the ready storing of material with in such hollow space and otherwise provides a. bulky construction.
This invention is designed t-o overcome the above noted defects and objects of such invention are therefore to provide an interlocking cap for rolls which does not obstruct the interior of the roll, and in which each cap is a complete entity in itself and does not require a longitudinal member thru the entire roll to the other cap.
Further objects are to provide an interlocking cap for a roll of roofing material which seals the outer end of the roll and is held in firm engagement therewith by expansible means carrfed upon the inner side. of such cap; to provide interlocking caps which are complete in themselves; to provide interlocking caps with means upon their exterior whereby the expansible means positionediiiteriorly of the roll may be manipulated to engage the interior surface and hold the cap in position.
An embodiment of t-lie invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view thru a roofing roll showing the caps in position, such roll, however, being shown broken away for ease of illustration.
Figure 2 is a view from the inner side of one of the interlocking caps.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen tion" in Figure l.
that aroll l off ordinary rooting material', provided' with a` holltirv interior 2 has been illustrated. End caps which interlock with the interior ofA tlierooiing'roll' and abut the outer end faces thereof aie shown inl posiA TheseV caps: comprise an annular flangeBpiovidedvitli at cupv shaped body portionwhich may consist ofa cylindrical portion 4' of slightly lessv diameter than theliollow portion ofI the roll; and with the upwardly bulged conical central portion 5. v y
Upon-the' inner sideofthiscon'icali por-- tionyanysuitable eXpans'zble means may be provided and in the forni illustrated, a spring spider having a central portion 6 and angularly arranged arms 7 is shown. The spring arms are preferably provided with inturned gripping ends 8 and with a rectangular recess 9 in its central portion 6. A bolt 10 is passed thru the spider and thru the conical portion 5 of t-lie cup-shaped end closure member, and is so positioned that its head l1 is socketed within the rectangular recess 9 to thereby prevent the bolt from turning. The upper threaded portion l2 of the bolt, which projects outwardly beyond the central portion of the cup-shaped ineinber, is provided with a` mit 13. Then this nut is tightened the spring arms are forced into interlocking engagement with the inte` rior surface of the roll and the end closure cap is firmly held in an inwardly drawn manner. Any attempt to pry the cap off results iii a firmer gripping of the arms and frustrates such attempt.
It is preferable in forming the annular flange 3 to provide such flange with series of corrugated portions, as indicated at 14, to bot-li strengthen the flange and to aid in the firm engagement of the flange with the ends of the roll. It is obvious that if it is desired the spring arms T may be reinforced adjacent the central portion (i by suitable' means, as, for inst-ance, reinforcing ribst thickened portions, or in any desired manner.
Although one expansible means has been i are adapted to seal the ends of the rolls without obstructing the interior hollow portions thereof, and that such caps may be formed in a sturdy, rugged and simple manner.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that such invention is to be limited only as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. An interlocking cap for hollow7 rolls of sheet material comprising a closure inember having an annular concentric flange adapted to abut the outer end of the roll and a cup shaped body portion adapted for positioning within the hollow portion of the roll, an expansible spider having angularly arranged arms mounted upon the end of the cup shaped portion, and a bolt eX- tending through said spider and cup shaped portion, whereby when the bolt is tightened, the said spider is flexed and the arms thereof are forced outwardly into binding engagement with the interior of the hollow portion of the roll and the closure drawn into sealing engagement with the end of the roll.
2. An interlocking cap for hollow rolls of sheet material comprising a closure member having an annular concentric liange adapted to abut the outer end of the roll, and a cup shaped body portion extending inwardly of the roll and integrally formed with said flange, an expansible spider having angularly arranged arms with their upper portions contacting with the lower surface of said cup shaped portion, and a bolt extending through the spider and cup shaped portion, whereby when said bolt is tightened, said arins slide along the under surface of said cup shaped portion and are forced into direct binding engagement with the inner portion of the roll.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee` in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
PHILLIPP F. FLAGGE.
