Application filed September To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EUGENE lFn'rzEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fluid- Tight Containers and Closures Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fluid tight c011- tainers and closures therefor.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a container equipped with a threaded closure including a spring pressed valve for closing the outlet to the container.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container composed of seam cnnect ed sections the seam joining the respective sections being so formed as to positively prevent leakage of the container and to corn stitute a reinforce for the body thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container and an airtight closure therefor which are extremely simple in construction, consist of comparatively few parts being therefore inexpensive to manufacture and which yet are highly efficient in operation. practical and otherwise designed to meet the requirements of long service.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings 1- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a container and the closure therefor, parts being broken out and in section.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the neck and closure showing the washer or valve in its raised position ver the outlet of the neck.
Fig. 3 is a similar view taken in a plane at right angles to Fig. 2 with the valve shown in'section and seated over the outlet or mouth of the container carried neck.
Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section of a. portion of the respective sections of the container showing the first step in the formation of the seam; and 7 Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are similar views showing the successive steps in forming the seam which joins the respective sections of the container.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates a portion of a container such as a hot water 30, 1921. Serial no. 504,268.
bottle, which has an opening thereinfor the reception of a tubular neck 6 to provide an outlet 7 for the container As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the closure comprises the neck 6 having a reduced lower exteriorly screw threaded end 8 adapted to enter the container through the opening thereinand to receive a nut 9 preferably composed of brass. This neck 6 is also provided at the base of its reduced portion 8 with a curvilinear groove 11 opening longitudinally relatively to the neck wherein the flange 12 around the container opening is seated. The outer or body portion of the neck 6 is also exteriorly screw threaded for engagement with a threaded cap 14 which is provided in its outer face at the top thereof with a depression or recess 15 in which the circular head 16 of a stem 17 is normally seated (see ll ig. 2).
Mounted in the cap 14 and around the stem 17 is a coiled spring 18 which bears at one end against the inner face of the top of (iii the cap and at its other end against a valve 19 held on the stem 17 by a screw 23. 'The valve 19 has a gasket 21 of rubber or other suitable material arranged onits inner face and over which is mounted a washer 20 between the head ofthe screw 23 and the valve. The coiled spring 18 has its ends flattened and bent inward to prevent the'spring' from unwinding.
The neck 6 is also equipped on the reduced end 8 thereof with a sleeve 10 one end of which is shaped to conform to the inner face of the container 5 around the opening therein in connection with which the closure is to be used and the neck is secured to the container by inserting the reduced end 8 through the opening therein with the flange 12 of the container fitting in the groove 11 of the neck then placing on the reduced inner end of said neck the sleeve 10 and then applying the nut 9 and screwing it on to securelv clamp the container between the respective parts of the neck a washer or gasket 1t) being inserted between the end of the sleeve 10 and the inner face of the container as is shown clearly in Fig. 1.
After the neck' 6 has been so applied to the container the cap 141s screwed onto the outer end of said neck against the tension of the spring 18 whereby the valve 19 will be forcibly seated over the outlet opening or outer end? of said neck forming a. fluid tight joint between the neck and the cap. The screwing up of the cap 14: will obviously operate to force the head 16 of the stem 17 outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 3 the spring 18 operating to retract it when the cap is removed.
It will be obvious that the closure shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is adapted for use in connection with various types of containers the container shown in Figs. 4 to 8 inclusive, be: ing found practical and highly eflieient for use in connection with the peculiar form of closure shown.
The container shown in Figs. 4 to 8 comprises sections 30 and 31 connected by the seam constituting a part of this invention. These sections 30 and 31 are each provided with a flange projecting laterally around the perimeter thereof the flange 32 being narrower than the flange 33 of section 31. These flanges 32 and 33 are arranged in overlapping relation in close contact when the sections 30 and 31 arebroiight into 0perative position as is shown clearly in Fig. 4. The projecting end 34 of the flange 33 is then bent and folded inwardly over the flange 32 and the so united flanges are then rolled inwardly toward the body of the container in the manner shown in Figs. 6 to 8, Fig. 8 showing the completed form of seam which lies close to and centrally of the container thereby reinforcing the same at this point. .7
The container formed of these sections 30 and 31 has an opening 35 formed at the shoulder thereof and flanged at 12 to receive the closure described heretofore and shown in Figs. 1 to 3.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the'drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any niodificationswithin .the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I claim 1. The combination with a container having its body provided with an opening at onecorner thereof and further provided with an outwardly projecting flange extending around said opening. and disposed at an angle with respect to said body, of an angularly disposed neck extended through said opening and having its outer face provided with a groove for the reception of said flange, means mounted on the inner end of said neck for clamping said flange thereto. and a cap threadably engaging with the outer portion of said neck and provided with a spring controlled valvular device adapted to seat on the outer end of the neck for closing it when the cap is adjusted toward the neck.
2. The combination with a container having its body provided with an opening at one corner thereof and further provided with an outwardly projecting flange extending around said opening and disposed at an angle with respect to said body, of an angiilarly disposed neck extended through said opening and having its outer face provided with a groove for the reception of said flange, means mounted on the inner end of said neck for clamping said flange thereto. and a cap tlireadably engaging with the outer portion of said neck and provided with a spring controlled valvular device adapted to seat on the outer end of the neck for closing it when the cap is adjusted toward the neck. said device including a stem having a head arranged exteriorly of and seating in the cap when said device is moved clear of the neck.

The combination with a container having itsbody rovided with an opening in one corner thereof and further provided with an outwardly projecting flange extending around said opening and disposed at an angle with respect to the body, of an angularly disposed neckextended through said opening and having its outer face provided with a groove for the reception of said flange, a shiftable annular element mounted on the inner portion of the neck and providing means when shifted in one direction to clamp the flange to the neck, adjustable means engaging with the inner end of the neck for shifting said element to clamp the flange and a cap having threaded engagement with the outer end of the neck and provided with a spring controlled valvular device seating on the neck for closing it when the cap is adjusted toward the neck.
