A. LATOUR PET COCK OFENER FOR Au'rouopnks Filed Nov. 10. 1923 I i A I l/ uvvewron Andre Larour,
ATTOR EX Patented Mar. 3, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
ANDRE LATOUR, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
PET-COCK OPENER FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDRE LAroUn. a British subject, residing at No. 1455 Cardinal Street, in the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful I1nprovements in Pet-Cock Openers for Automobiles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to pet-cock openers for automobiles and particularly belongs to the class of devices for actuating pet-cocks or valves from a distance. r
The main object of this invention is to provide a most convenient means of actuating the pet-cocks in places difficult of ac cess, such as to the oil case underneath automobiles.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a diagrammatic view showing, in perspective, the device applied to the oil case of an automobile, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device itself shown in a closed position.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in both figures.
In said drawings, 1 indicates the casing of the pet-cock l, the handle 4: of the cook or valve proper of which has a seat 2 partly reduced peripherally to clear a pin 3, fixed on top of the casing, so that when the handie is actuated to close the valve, the stop shoulder formed by the end face of the seat 2 will abut against the pin 3, as shown in Figure 2. Fixed to the pet-cock handle 4, by means of bolt nuts 5 and 6, is a lever 7 which projects outwardly through a hole,
in the said handle 4. The position of lever 7, in this instance, is in alignment with the pet-cock when the handle 4 is in its closed position. The projecting end 8 of the lever 7, has an elongated loop at right angles to said lever and in horizontal alignment therewith. One end 9 of this loop is adapted to receive the end of a spiral spring 11 fastened to any suitable place, preferably 10, 1923. Serial No. 674,078.
underneath the automobile, thereby holding the handle 4 normally in its closed position. The other end 10 of the loop is adapted to receive the end of a rigid rod 12 preferably extending through the side frame of the automobile, i. e., through a hole l2 made in the outside flange at the base of the front mud-guard, as shown in Figure 1, and the projecting end of the rod 12 is formed into a handle 18 to maintain same in place against the sides of said hole, when the device is not in operation.
When it is desired to verify the contents of the oil-case of the automobile, the only operation required is to pull the handle 18, which will cause the lever 7 to turn or swing the handle 4, thereby opening the pet-cock. Upon releasing the handle 13, the spring 11 will immediately close the pet-cock.
What I claim as my invention is:
The combination of a valve casing; a rotary valve therein provided with an operating handle, said handle having a seat which is formed at one end with a stop shoulder; a pin fixed to said casing in posit-ion to travel along said seat during the rotation of the valve and to engage said shoulder when said valve is fully closed; a rod rigidly secured at one end to said handle and provided at its other end. with an elongated loop which is disposed in the plane of the rod and projects laterally therefrom in opposite directions; a retractile spring attached to one end of the loop to normally hold said rod! in a position in which it closes the valve; and an operating element connected to the other end of said loop and extending to a point distant from the same, to swing said rod against the action of said spring in a direction to open the valve.
Signed at Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this first day of October, 1923.
