FASTENING MEANS FOR HINGED DOORS.

`Fastening Means for Hinged Doors, nof
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a fastening means for hinged doors. This invention. is particularly adapted to effect the secure closure of doors which are warped or do not swing true on their hinges. For example, take the case of a door which has downwardly sagged on its hinges with the result that the upper marginal portions of the door are spaced from its frame when in closed position. lVhen this novel rod and complementary member are placed upon the adjacent vertical marginalportions of the door and door frame, closure'of the door causes these co-operable parts to force the door rearwardly against its sagged hinge so that the door is forced into-proper alinement with the frame. The action of the complementary parts of'lthis invention is in the nature of a toggle joint, so that when the door is closed, it is held against accidental opening. j
While the term doors is employed, it is to be understood that this invention is equally applicable to windows of the hinged type, such for example, as French windows.
The object of this invention therefore is to provide an improved fastening means for hinged doors.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.
In the drawings, there has been disclosed a structure designed to carry out the objects of the invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the exact features shown, various changes may be made wiiin the scope of the claims which follow.

In this selected embodiment of the invention there is shown a door 4 mounted on the door frame 5 by means of a hinge 6. The door 4, is shown as adapted to be swung to close the door-way between the frames 5 and 7. The invention broadly provides a pivoted lever or rod carried by a marginal portion of the. door and adapted to engage a member'secured to the complementary door frame. The pivoted rod and door frame member may both be positioned on the vertical marginal portions of the door and frame or on the horizontal marginal portions of the door and frame.v They are preferably positioned where they will be most eifective in righting the particular sag or warping of a door and thereby hold the door in securely closed position. As shown in the drawings the co-opera-ble parts are positioned upon the vertical or upright marginal portions of the door frame 7 and the door 4. A
A recess S is preferably provided in the marginal portion of the door and metallic plates 9 and k11 are secured by yscrews to the adjacent portions of the door L.lso that the plates are positioned along 'the opposed horizontal sides of the recess. A pivot pin 12 is carried by the lower plate 11 and extends vertically substantially across the recess 8. The rod 13 is preferably formed with an integral enlarged portion lllwhich is apertured and thereby mounted upon the pivot pin 12 for swinging movement thereon. The recess side 1,5 `is inclined outwardly with relation to the vertical plane of the door passing through the pivot pin 12, so that, as shown in dotted and full line positions in Figure 1, the rod may swing through the vertical yplane of the door passing through the pivot pin.
Means are provided yieldably to hold the rod` to one side of such vertical plane of the door. As here shown, such yieldable means consists of a torsion spring 16 coiled aboutv the pivot pin 12 and having one spring end anchored tothe pin by insertion in a recess formed in the pin. The other end portion 17 of the spring extends from the pin and is terminally offset to engage the rod 13 normally to hold the rod in the position shown in the dotted lines in Figure 1. The rod is adapted to project from the door recess to engage a complementary member secured to an adjacent portion of the door trame. The effective length of the rod is preferably adjustable as by means of an interiorly threaded head` 18 received in adjustable threaded engagement on the end of the rod.
The co-operable door frame member is provided by the metallic catch 1S) screwed in a recess in the door frame 7. This catch is provided with an outwardly presented recess 21 which is adapted to receive the head 18 as the door is arcuately swung to closed position.
The terminal tace 22 of the head 18 is preferably inclined slightly toward the inclined side 15 of the door recess.
As the door is swung closed from its dottedvline position shown in Figure 1, the rod 13 is'yieldably held against the inclined side 15 of the recess. ln such position, the rod does not attain its maximum projection from the door recess. Closure of the door causes the end of the head to pass within the recessed catch member, wherein lthe head is held during completion of door closing so that relative movement of the door and rod is had, and the rod is swung through the vertical plane ot the door passing through the pivot pin 12. The result of such relative rod movement' is to increase the eii'ective extension ot the rod head 'from the door recess so that the adjacent door portion is thrust in the direction `of the door hinges and the door is thereby trued to its frame and thus held in closed position. Furthermore, the door is secured in such t'ully closed position against accidental opening as an opening ytorce must be exerted upon the door sufficient to cause the rod to again pass through the vertical plane of the door containing the pivot pin 12.
l claim as my invention:
1. Fastening means for hinged doors including, a rod, a pivotal mounting Yfor thel rod adjacent the marginal portion ot the door, and a member secured to acomplementary door frame and adapted to be engaged by the rod as the door is closed, the rod being ot a length that when in contact with the door-trame member a. longitudinal thrust is exerted through the rod in movement from one side to the other of a line passing through the pivot of the rod.
2. Fastening means tor hinged doors including, a rod, a pivotal mounting for the. rod in a recess in the marginal portion ot the door, and a catch secured in a` recess in a. complementary door frame, the rod projecting from the door recess and being adapted to engage the catch as the door is closed, the rod being ot a length that when in contact with the door-frame catch a longitudinal thrust is exerted through the rod in movement trom one side to the other of a line passing through the pivotof the rod.
3. Fastening means for hinged doors including, a rod, a pivotal mount-ing for the rod adjacent a marginal portion of the door, means yieldably to hold the rod to one side of the vertical plane o't the door through said mounting, a catch secured to a complementary door frame and adapted to be engaged by the rod as the door is close-d, the rod being ol a length that when in contact with the door-frame catch a longitudinal thrust is exerted through the rod as it yieldably swings from one side to the other ol" a. line passing through the pivot oi' the rod.

Fastening means tor hinged doors in` cluding, a rod, a` pivot-al mounting for the rod adjacent the marginal portion or the door whereby the rod may swing in a horizontal plane, means yieldably to hold the rod to one side of the vertical plane of the door passing through said mounting, and a catch secured to a complementary door irame and adapted to be engaged by the rod as the door is closed, whereby upon closure ot the door, a' longitudinal thrust is exerted through the rod and the rod is caused to swing horizontally thro-ugh said vertical plane and accidental opening of the door is thereafter prevented.
5. Fastening means for hinged doors including, a rod, a pivotal mounting for the rod adjacent the marginal portion of the door, a head adjustably mounted on the end of the rod, and a catch secured to a complementary door trame and adapted to be engaged by said head as the door is closed, the head being adjusted so as to force the adjacent door portion away from the adjacent frame portion whereby the door may be held in securely closed position.

Fastening means for hinged doors including, a rod, a pivotal mounting for the rod adjacent the marginal portion of the door, a spring carried by the door and engaging the rod yieldably to hold the rod to one side o'f the vertical plane of the door passing through said mounting, and a catch secured to a complementary door trame and adapted to be engaged by the rod as the door is closed, whereby upon closure of the door, a longitudinal thrust is exerted through the rod and the rod is caused yieldably to swing through the Vertical plane and accidental opening oic therdoor is therea fter prevented,
