HIMRRQVEMENT 1N WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,818, dated July 7, 1874 application filed April 16, 1874.

To all whom it may concern;-

Be it known that I, JAMES M. ADDLEBUR- GER, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Washing-Machine; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of certain parts of a washing-machine; also, in so connecting a hinged platform with a hinged leg to the end of the box that it may be folded under the same when not in use, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved washing-machine, ready for operation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, with the machine proper folded up. Figs. 3 to 8 are detailed views of the same.

A represents the wash-box, supported on table-legs a, and provided with two posts, B, attached to its inner sides by means of pins or pivots b. The said posts are kept in position by two hooks, b, which are hooked into two corresponding holes, a, in the box A, and they are provided, near the tops, with dovetailed slots 0 and sliding blocks 0, to which the flat connecting-rods D are so attached by the pivots d as to overlap the narrow sides of the slots 0, and secure the said sliding blocks within their proper bounds. The tops of the sliding blocks a are provided with the shanks d, on which the spiral springs E are slipped, and which partly enter the holes e in the tops of the posts B, to allow vertical play. The rods D support the rubbing-frame, which consists of the bars F and the cross-bars f f, the former being connected with the rods above mentioned by the pivots f The bars F are provided with an inclined side rubbingboard, H, and a stay-board, G, to which the lower rubbing board G is attached, as exhibited by Fig. 8 in cross-section. The lower rubber-board consists of a frame of the boards I and the cross=bars i, which supports the re= volving rollers i and is attached to the bottom of the wash-box by the stay-pins i and corresponding holes in the said wash-box. One of the boards I is provided at the top with two inwardlyinclined holes, I, into which two pins, k, of corresponding inclination, on the bottom of the side rubbing-board K, are inserted, which arrangement prevents the lifting and rocking of the said side rubbin g-board when used. The face of the board K is inclined the same as that of the board H, thus enabling the operator to increase the space between the said two boards by lifting the rods F. Two table-leaves, L, are hinged right and left to the box A, in such manner that they may be turned down to the sides of the said box, or be turned up in a horizontal position, in which they are sustained by the swinging brackets L. The said brackets are steadied by the notches min the cross-bars M,

which are fastened to the lower sides of the leaves L, the side of the notch at which the bracket L enters being gradually reduced toward the bottom of the box, thereby forming an inclined line, m, as shown in Fig. 5. This construction facilitates the righting of the bracket into the notch. At the rear of the box A, to its bottom, a skeleton platform, N, is hinged, which may be turned under the said box, and secured to its bottom by a button, a, or a hook, and which, in its horizontal position, is supported by a leg, 0, hinged to the same at 0, and steadied by the hook o. The hinge 0, being fastened to the upper outside corner of the platform N, enables the operator to turn the said platform close to the bottom of the box A, and to turn the leg 0 under the said platform, when he wishes the same out of .his way.

When the machine is to be folded up, the hooks b are thrown back, and the posts B are laid down to the front. The roller-box I is moved to the front of the box, and the side rubber-board K is placed in the rear of the box. The cross-bar f which serves as the handle of the top and side rubber, is. laid down on the bar F in front of the box A.

The machinery is now all within the box, and may be covered with the center leaf A, as it is fully represented by Fig. 2.

I am aware that a combined washing-ma chine and table is, broadly speaking, not new; hence I disclaim it as being my invention.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the folding posts B, the connecting-rods D, the bars F, the rubber G,

the side rubber H, and their respective rub hing-boards I and K, constructed and operated as and for the purpose set forth.
